I've seen an eye like that on a garter snake. It was hit in the head by a weed whacker and it put a hole in the poor guys head and his eye pooled with blood.
Was this near the fairgrounds my cousin lives in belleville (however you spell it) and hes been finding black rat snakes and kept one for a couple days so I could confirm that it was rat snake and I made him let it go. He didnt really want to keep it anyways it kept trying to bite him.
@Reebbo It varies by location. They grow large in my area(southern Indiana). I've caught several, including one last year, over 6 feet in length. A few years ago I was driving down the highway just after dark. There was a van in front of me that unfortunately had just ran one over. It was too late to try and save it, which saddened me. I measured it out at 7 feet, 2 inches. I was really saddened by this. I hear reports of 8 feet, but they've elude me thus far. Great video as always, Dylan!
I actually did some research on the eye thing, because last year I came across a lot of snakes with that problem. The technical term is 'hyphema," and a lot of snakes get it by getting clipped by cars. It usually corrects itself in time, depending on the seriousness of the injury. Its also treatable, again depending on how bad it is.
Very beautiful snake. Saw many DOR when I was up there last, wish I could have been there a few minutes earlier... Oh well. Great vid, I love the vividness.
@TexasHerper So it is a head trauma issue huh? That's pretty cool that it can correct itself under certain circumstances. Snakes are pretty tough critters.
I just love watching your videos...you remind me so much of my son and ur knowledge on animals is just amazing! Keep up the good work D and make MORE vids man!
Nice Video dylan! I can't believe you guys dont have snow considering you only live about 5 hours away. we are covered here! Hope you are havin fun in the warm weather bro! Seeya again in the spring for some more snake road action!
great vid as always, is this current bc im in central indiana and covered in snow and ur in northern illinois so hard to believe so nice out but i could b wrong lol
@turner850 Probably because I don't fix up motorcycles or work on a dumb boat and argue with my dad to create drama. Discovery seems to be more into reality TV than it is into education.
@Reebbo Its really gone down hill in the past few years. Your way to "normal" to get offered a contract there, your actually very informative, laid back and fun to watch. Refreshing for sure!
Wow your videos never seise to amaze me on how high quality they are and i wish it still looked like that outside but i guess well just have to wait til spring :(
i saved one from a sod plastic thing in my neighborhood and the snakes skin grew over the plastic and it was nasty to cut out to let it free...booo plastic!
With that bad eye you'll sure know if you find him again, and if you do you'll be able to see how he grows. Great post--it's nice to see a vid showing how gentle black rat snakes can be.
So im guessing you gave up on herping?

herpindude2010 1 year ago
@herpindude2010 around 6ft is the max length around here, but we rarely see them even 5ft long. I am sure it varies by locality though.
