When I was 18, a woman in her mid-thirties took me to her house and began taking off her clothing. As she stepped away from her skirt, she glanced up at me, confident in her seduction, and shook her hips at me. I, however, had just noticed that her calves were larger than my thighs.

Listening to Elina reminds me of that night. Her voice is more Mother Superior than seductive tart, and at times she looks more in her 50's than her 20's. Julia Migenes-Johnson still defines this role, for now.

I bought the DVD - totally worth it! - Garanca is exquisite!  What a performer and artist! This production of Carmen has wonderful staging also.

What an outstanding voice and stage presence, all wrapped up in a lovely package to boot! I've seen a number of Carmen performances, but I have a feeling this one will be the new standard, certainly by which all future Carmens will be judged, and quite possibly a good many past Carmens as well.

Saw this production tonight. Very, very good singing, acting, music, and set. Garanca and Alagna are wonderful. (I miss Samuel Ramey as the toreador.) Interestingly, this is not the performance I saw. For instance, Carmen has no cuffs on, has to move the stool, and has the cut on the front of her leg. The one I saw had better camera angles, also. Marvellous 2.5 hours, recommended.
