OH MAN - RAY, RAY, where have you been all my life. I'm from UTAH COUNTY and we have never met. I married and music man and we boast of 20,000. I can see you have more. Would love an invite to your place sometime and then you can come to ours. It's a date. Bring your wife - we'd have fun sharing and playing music. . . .
@InTheGarageTV I knew he was from Utah, but not from Delta. Monarch Record Mfg. would always have a number in the run-off grooves of the records they pressed. Each number was preceeded by a triangle, the Greek letter for D, otherwise known as Delta. So, everyone called that number a Delta number. Most collectors that know Delta numbers and their history can easily date a record by that number. They started at number 1 in July of `54 and went well into the 6-digit range before going back...
@InTheGarageTV Didn't get the chance to tell you it's for a book I'm writing about Delta numbers. Mostly a reference book. My friend, Reg already did a book on every Motown pressing and is now doing one on every record Columbia pressed for other labels. We're helping each other with our projects. I also probably have the biggest break-in collection on the planet. Frank Merrill has nearly everything on vinyl, but I also take break-ins I find online. I'm also writing a book on break-ins.
@InTheGarageTV Next time you're here on YouTube, look up Dickie Goodman. Find a video called, "Flying Saucer", or one called, "Mr, Jaws". Those are break-ins.
@InTheGarageTV Yeah, you could say that. But, at least in Dickie's case, the records he picked out to use on his records weren't even hits, yet! He just had this knack for knowing which records were going to be big hits in the near future and was hardly ever wrong! Some break-in artists, myself included, would just use ANYTHING; oldies, stuff that was NEVER a hit, records that very few people ever heard of, etc., as long as it worked! Personally, I won't use a joke I don't actually LOL at.
@InTheGarageTV Actually, I just dig through my head for the jokes! Sometimes, I'll be listening to the radio and I'll hear a line of a song they're playing and I come up with a very funny context to set that into, but, quite often, I can never get enough material for more than a few jokes on any one subject. I'd been wanting to do a break-in ever since the late `70's, but could never come up with a topic! In the `90's, my neighbor did one on O. J. Simpson. I NEVER thought to do one on him!!
@InTheGarageTV So, I started writing a few jokes for him to use on his record and he decided not to use them. They were too god to waste, so I decided to do my own O. J. break-in. At first I struggled to find more jokes, then, as I was recording it, more and more jokes came to me and I ended up expanding it to over 13:00!!! Because the pressing plant could only do 4:30, or so, per side, I had to cut it WAY down. The final cut was about 9:30 long.
@InTheGarageTV In most cases, even though nobody's ever heard of some of the records I used, they still laughed at the jokes!! That's all that counts!!
@InTheGarageTV ...to number 1 again in 1980 and getting nearly back to 6-digits again when they closed up shop in the mid `90's. Monarch was located in California, so, most Delta numbers can be found out west. Quite a few show up in the east, but, not that many. It's taken me nearly 10 years to come CLOSE to finding 20,000 of them!! Had I not had TONS of help from a few others, I wouldn't have 1/10 of that!!
I'd LOVE to go through his 45's & get as many Delta numbers as I can!! Hey, Ray, care to help with my list? I nearly have 20,000 numbers in my list, so far, but that's only about 10% of everything Monarch pressed (on 45, 78 or 12" singles. In 1980, they started all over again at number 1 and included albums and 33 rpm 12" singles in the new numbering series.). I don't have either of the number 1's, yet. My lowest number in `54 is 6 and in `80 it's something like 638 (Split Enz / True Colours).
@InTheGarageTV I'm near Jerry's Records, in Pittsburgh. I haven't had the chance to make the movie yet, at the moment, I guess the best I can dish out is a series of pictures of the collection, light permitting. As I've said, it's in major disarry. I've also been very busy at work and with TONS of various recording projects I want to get done, as well as dealing with people in my life getting sick or dying on me. I lost my singer & an ex-guitarist since late Oct.!! Now my aunt has cancer.
@InTheGarageTV No, where is it? I've heard of some guy in Texas, Stanislaus Korchinski, I'm pretty sure his name is, who says he's found a way to rid the entire body of cancer on a genetic level!!!! That's was back in the early `90's!!!! Sounds pretty news-worthy to me!!!! (Strange, don't you think, that the Susan G. Komen breast cancer thingie is based there and hasn't heard of him or his discovery!!) The race for the cure is a great cause, but what's the point if there are already cures?
Looks to me like he's got a HELL of a lot more than 8000!! But he doesn't top Jerry!! His record store is so big, if you knocked out all of the walls, you could EASILY play a big league regulation baseball game in it!! Imagine that FILLED with records, floor to ceiling!!!! And, the last I heard, about 10 years ago, he had 10 warehouses filled with nothing BUT records!! Paul Mawhinney thinks he's got the ultimate collection (a million or 3), but Jerry's easily got him beat!!
@InTheGarageTV Jerry Weber (Webber?). He runs a used record store here called, Jerry's Fine Used Records. He sometimes advertises in Goldmine and apparently auctions rare stuff online. He's been in business here since the late `70's.
@InTheGarageTV And the last 4 digits in his phone number are 4533! I know he started out with someone else in a small store in the very early `80's, MAYBE the late `70's, called, Record Graveyard. A few years later, either they changed their name to Garbage Records, or he went solo under that name, again it was a small store. A few years later, he started Jerry's Records in a much bigger store on the 2nd floor, then expanded to the 3rd floor, then opened a budget store across the street.....
@InTheGarageTV Yeah, but even a lot of his customers don't seem to realize what that represents. I'm sure that, if he could, he'd toss 78, 16 and 80 in there, too!
Hey! Have you ever met someone that has a 16 rpm record? I've been collecting since I was 4 (1961) and I've seen all sorts of configurations of records, but I've NEVER even seen so much as a PICTURE of a 16 rpm!! Even in my own collection I have a cylinder (and know where I can get LOTS more) and a few 80 rpm's, but never a 16!
@InTheGarageTV Yes, and the ONLY thing I've ever heard about them was that they were used to record "talking books" for the blind. I'd guess you could fit maybe 2 hours on each side!! Radio Shack put out an album in the late `70's at 33 rpm that had 45 minutes of music on each side. That's the longest single-album I've ever heard of, with Todd Rundgren's "Initiation" coming in a very close second at about 1:08:00, unless you count the Syntonic Research albums, some of which can be played...
@InTheGarageTV Yeah, I CAN be. But there's still lots I don't know. Did you know that Del Shannon's real name was Charles Westover? I don't know that. Did you know that Simon & Garfunkle started out as Tom & Jerry? I don't know that, either. Did you know that if you play "Alice's Restaurant" backwards at 78 it screws up your needle? I don't that either. See? There's a LOT of stuff I still don't know!
@InTheGarageTV Maybe some day, I'll know it. Did you know that some French guy invented recording years before Edison? And, they've discoverd that, with hand molded clay pottery, the instruments used to form the clay on the spining wheel could actually record the sounds in the area into the clay!! So, it's actually possible that we can actually listen to what people were saying in ancient Egypt and beyond!!
@RedVynil I had read about the clay pottery before. That's amazing by accident we have some ancient recordings. Speaking of pottery, did you watch my new video?
@InTheGarageTV No, didn't know you posted one? Did you see any of my videos? Look up BabylonKid88, he has a number of my band's videos posted here. I'm the one bashing the drums.
@InTheGarageTV ...called, Aunt Minnie's. About 2 years later, he closed up both stores and moved to his present location in Sq. Hill. Last time I was up there, a year ago, he said he recxently bought a car dealership in Swissvale which he uses as his warehouse and he lives there, too! If only I had the time, I'd go to his store, as well as others near here, and spend hours and hours hunting for Delta numbers for my list. But, I can't spend my good looks, so I have to work if I want to eat!
@InTheGarageTV Well, maybe, if I could just get my damn tits to grow already!!! But, really, I just don't have the room for many more records. Maybe if I had a warehouse at least 1/4 the size of his, I could easily get more records.
@InTheGarageTV You can call it anything ya want- as long as the FCC does not get their jollies off on visiting ya- and trust me, these guys are complete masterbatin' clowns- they haven't a clue what radio stations are all about, it is all about the force of the law- these guys are mostly low level lawyers who just look for huge payouts, money and kickbacks- CHEERS FIGHT FOR FREE RADIO
@InTheGarageTV He was one of my many Asst. Scout Masters. He told me he was 18 years old in the mid 80's... and I believed him. Always thought it was weird that his son was the same age as him.
@InTheGarageTV you just don't need to be in front of the camera to ask questions. There are three ways I've seen documentaries deal with this without being directly in front of the camera:
1) ask the question but do it from behind the camera so all we hear is the hosts voice.
2) ask the question behind the camera but replace the footage and audio with a black card with the question written on it and then cut to the answer.
3) have the person repeat the question themselves before they answer.
@InTheGarageTV and the last one doesn't have to be a direct repeat of the question it can be more subtle. so instead of having the person say "when did i start collecting records? in the summer of 19xx..." they can say "i started collecting records in the summer of 19xx..."
@InTheGarageTV First off, if I had a way to do video, I would post one, but, secondly, I need to get it all organized. Most of it is up on the third floor, but with multiple recording projects of various bands I like going on at the same time, a good bit of the collection is in disarray. Except for a few hundred to a thousand or two of the 78's, and maybe a few stacks of "new" singles, I have the entire collection in a computerized list I've been putting together for the past 25 years.
@RedVynil Just do a quick dirty video showing the stacks and shelves of records. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I'd love to see your collection.
Too bad you weren't doing this project 15 years ago! My brother was into collecting beer cans and beer signs & my dad had the yard FILLED 5 times over with hubcaps he'd find along the road after pothole season. He'd clean them up & sell them to people that were missing hubcaps. Every few years, some guy would come here and buy out the ENTIRE yard!! Also, you might like to talk to Dr. Demento about his record collection & Rick Nielsen about his guitar collection.
@InTheGarageTV I BOUGHT A SMALL STACK OF BREAK-IN RECORDS WELL OVER A MONTH AGO AND I still HAVEN'T EVEN HEARD THEM YET! I BOUGHT A FIRST PRESSING OF "UMMAGUMMA" A FEW WEEKS AGO AND ONLY just GOT TO HEAR IT 3 DAYS AGO!!
Sorry, it wasn't supposed to be all caps, but I don't have time to correct that, now. My guitarist's wake/memorial starts in 2 hours!
@digdugdiggy Thanks for subbing. The camera man busted up laughing when we did the record shot. I had to delete the audio for just a split second. I'm gonna put some deleted scenes up next week and I'll throw that in there.
You have a great concept, but I feel like the way you're interviewing these people is rather insulting. You're taking this man's passion and turning it into some kind of 'humorous' thing for purposes that, I assume, you think are going to entertain the general YouTube audience. It's not working... Please have more respect for these people in the future. This guy was awesome.
@HailToTheThief9 I'm not trying to be insulting. In fact everyone I've filmed has loved the outcome. They're part of all the gags.
Yes, this is his passion and yes it's awesome. Who says one can't have fun and be passionate at the same time. I have a lot of respect for everyone I interview and they know the jokes are merely that - jokes.
@MCIzawa Steve Brule has to be the best comic character out there now. He kills Michael Scott. One of my fave Dr. Brule quotes is "What's a friend? How do you get a friend? How do you keep a friend? How come I don't have any friends?"
The premise of this series is great, but it appears that it has the wrong person hosting it unfortunately. Their akward attempt at injecting their own humour it fails and ruins it most of the time (not all the time)
@rakwar 100% agreed. The concept and direction are great! Even the camera work is pretty good, but the host detracts from the story. Would be better in a This American Life format where the interviewer is more or less absent save for key narration. Just my .02
@jarthos123 Thanks for the input. I love This American Life but I also love to laugh and goof off. I want this series to be a mix of both. Did you watch any of the other episodes? My wife hosts them.
Oh my, I drooled all over myself watching that video. I can remember using a wire recorder, we even had a hand crank record player.
There's so much wonderful music on the old vinyl that is lost to newer generations, that goes for the 78's as well. Each generation cranks out it's own wonderful music though.
I was trying to figure out where I had heard the name before, until he pulled out that copy of the Daily Herald.
Your videos are exceptionally interesting, thanks.
Wow this is so fun and educational!

@RedVynil Are you sure you can't charm Jerry with your good looks for some vinyl?
InTheGarageTV 8 months ago
@InTheGarageTV Well, maybe, if I could just get my damn tits to grow already!!! But, really, I just don't have the room for many more records. Maybe if I had a warehouse at least 1/4 the size of his, I could easily get more records.
RedVynil 8 months ago
enjoyed the video:)

@shawn0612 Thanks for the smile. I'm glad you had a good time watching.

Thanks 4 sharing you collection Ray. I also am into Pirate Radio (gasp) record collecting, and smoking marijuana for medical purposes only LOL!!!
rockabillydj 9 months ago
@rockabillydj If I had a pirate radio station, I'd call it "Savvy?".
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV You can call it anything ya want- as long as the FCC does not get their jollies off on visiting ya- and trust me, these guys are complete masterbatin' clowns- they haven't a clue what radio stations are all about, it is all about the force of the law- these guys are mostly low level lawyers who just look for huge payouts, money and kickbacks- CHEERS FIGHT FOR FREE RADIO
rockabillydj 9 months ago
@rockabillydj You gotta keep changing your transmitter location to stay ahead of them.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
I had no idea Ray was such a criminal! Pirate radio. Nice!
stuthewise 9 months ago
@stuthewise Yeah. Did you know Ray from back in the day?
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV He was one of my many Asst. Scout Masters. He told me he was 18 years old in the mid 80's... and I believed him. Always thought it was weird that his son was the same age as him.
stuthewise 9 months ago
@stuthewise He's still 18!

host: please get out of the way of the interesting people telling their stories.
Everfalling 9 months ago
@Everfalling How will they tell their story without someone asking about it?
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV you just don't need to be in front of the camera to ask questions. There are three ways I've seen documentaries deal with this without being directly in front of the camera:
1) ask the question but do it from behind the camera so all we hear is the hosts voice.
2) ask the question behind the camera but replace the footage and audio with a black card with the question written on it and then cut to the answer.
3) have the person repeat the question themselves before they answer.
Everfalling 9 months ago
@Everfalling Good tips. I was mostly teasing, I know they can tell their story without a host.
My wife and I started this series and we want to have a host actually helping out and doing things with the Garage heads.
I actually edited some reel to reel tape with Ray but it didn't make the cut (pun intended). Maybe I'll put it up as a deleted scene.
Thanks for your 2 cents!
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV and the last one doesn't have to be a direct repeat of the question it can be more subtle. so instead of having the person say "when did i start collecting records? in the summer of 19xx..." they can say "i started collecting records in the summer of 19xx..."
Everfalling 9 months ago
Only 8000 records? That's not very many. I've got 50,000, but I guess I can't get on this show because mine aren't in the garage.
RedVynil 9 months ago
@RedVynil He has 8,000 45s and about 5,000 albums. Still, that's not much compared to your 50k!
Will you please post a quick video of your collection as a response to this video?
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV First off, if I had a way to do video, I would post one, but, secondly, I need to get it all organized. Most of it is up on the third floor, but with multiple recording projects of various bands I like going on at the same time, a good bit of the collection is in disarray. Except for a few hundred to a thousand or two of the 78's, and maybe a few stacks of "new" singles, I have the entire collection in a computerized list I've been putting together for the past 25 years.
RedVynil 9 months ago
@RedVynil Just do a quick dirty video showing the stacks and shelves of records. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I'd love to see your collection.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@InTheGarageTV I'll see what I can do, but I can't guarantee a good picture, the light on the camera only works as a flash IF it works at all!!
RedVynil 9 months ago
@RedVynil Hurry up already! ;)
InTheGarageTV 8 months ago
@InTheGarageTV Alright, alright, don't rush me!! Good things come to those who wait...QUIETLY!! ;-)
RedVynil 8 months ago
@RedVynil Ok. I'll wait quietly. Haha!
InTheGarageTV 8 months ago
@InTheGarageTV Okay, good boy!
RedVynil 8 months ago
RedVynil 8 months ago
I hope you're not letting the "odd host" comments get to you. They're all just high. You're hilarious!
templeforever97 9 months ago 2
@templeforever97 No, I'm not letting it bother me. In The Garage isn't for everyone.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Stick around for a new video every Tuesday.

@movezig1 Oh yeah it would be. There are so many awesome records to pull samples from in there.

@killzy Phew. I thought I was gonna have to report you to the internet police (Tetragrammaton).
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
HAHA! The snapping record had me cracking up, brilliant. I subb'd as soon as I saw this was a series.
digdugdiggy 9 months ago
@digdugdiggy Thanks for subbing. The camera man busted up laughing when we did the record shot. I had to delete the audio for just a split second. I'm gonna put some deleted scenes up next week and I'll throw that in there.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
You have a great concept, but I feel like the way you're interviewing these people is rather insulting. You're taking this man's passion and turning it into some kind of 'humorous' thing for purposes that, I assume, you think are going to entertain the general YouTube audience. It's not working... Please have more respect for these people in the future. This guy was awesome.
HailToTheThief9 9 months ago
@HailToTheThief9 I'm not trying to be insulting. In fact everyone I've filmed has loved the outcome. They're part of all the gags.
Yes, this is his passion and yes it's awesome. Who says one can't have fun and be passionate at the same time. I have a lot of respect for everyone I interview and they know the jokes are merely that - jokes.
Stick around, I think ITG will grow on ya.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
the host is odd. But the concept is really interesting.
pat52205 9 months ago
@pat52205 I def have an odd sense of humor. Keep watching!

Steve Brule?
MCIzawa 9 months ago
@MCIzawa Steve Brule has to be the best comic character out there now. He kills Michael Scott. One of my fave Dr. Brule quotes is "What's a friend? How do you get a friend? How do you keep a friend? How come I don't have any friends?"

The content is good but the humor is very juvenile.
JasonMcCreary 9 months ago
@JasonMcCreary Yeah, my wife says I act like a 13 year old all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed some of the video.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
The premise of this series is great, but it appears that it has the wrong person hosting it unfortunately. Their akward attempt at injecting their own humour it fails and ruins it most of the time (not all the time)
rakwar 9 months ago 5
@rakwar 100% agreed. The concept and direction are great! Even the camera work is pretty good, but the host detracts from the story. Would be better in a This American Life format where the interviewer is more or less absent save for key narration. Just my .02
jarthos123 9 months ago
@jarthos123 Thanks for the input. I love This American Life but I also love to laugh and goof off. I want this series to be a mix of both. Did you watch any of the other episodes? My wife hosts them.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@rakwar Thanks for the critique. I'm still finding my style. I'm going for a "How It's Made" meets Dr. Steve Brule.
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
@rakwar I wouldn't go that far.
pat52205 9 months ago
@pat52205 I agree! ;)

@anonubis If you were high, then how come your grammar is good?
InTheGarageTV 9 months ago
Oh my, I drooled all over myself watching that video. I can remember using a wire recorder, we even had a hand crank record player.
There's so much wonderful music on the old vinyl that is lost to newer generations, that goes for the 78's as well. Each generation cranks out it's own wonderful music though.
I was trying to figure out where I had heard the name before, until he pulled out that copy of the Daily Herald.
Your videos are exceptionally interesting, thanks.
StrawManfuut 9 months ago
@StrawManfuut I hope you didn't drool on the keyboard! I love records too and would love to dig through them to find some interesting sounds.
