  • Great lesson, thanks!

  • Thanks for doing this! Really appreciate it

  • i feel like hes staring into my soul

  • @JoeboMiller creepy how rarely he blinks

  • I would like to play fingerstyle. Please give me more exercises 2 ,3,4 ....so on.Thank you for your exercises.

  • @theswan86 so? lol , sry i don't get it

  • Loving the Dream Theatre T-Shirt, Antoine! :) Great lesson!

  • Just wanted to say thanks for this great video. Very simple, but thats why it works for beginners like me. I just couldn't get on with other videos, but you slow it down to an easy pace. I actualy got some kind of tune by finger picking! Cheers.

  • i though hes gonna playing nothing else matter by metallica...:)

  • thanks

  • i never thought antoine would be this generous

  • It sounds like Nothing Else Matters all the time.

  • These exercises are good practice, especially if after you get good at them you make variations and practice those as well. Did you begin with studying classical guitar?

  • Staring contest champion, this guy.. lol

  • There should be a metalocalypse of candyrat players.

  • Cool. Please post more fingerstyle exercise video's.

  • Dream Theater shirt!!! fuck yeah man.

  • Really cool to have a famous online guitar teacher!

  • thankyou very much! :) :)

  • Noob question, why do you call the ring finger, the A finger?

  • @jvkenshin416 Every finger you pluck the strings with is named by a single letter, thumb (Fr. pouce) = p, index = i, middle = m, ring (Fr. anneau) = a. Makes it easier to write down the right fingering on a piece of sheet music ;)

  • @dekoene91 thanks for the info. bro

  • @jvkenshin416 Classical guitar (which fingerstyle kind of comes from) is Spanish in origin and so in classical guitar tablature; pulgar = thumb, indice = index, medio = middle, and anular = ring finger. Antoine has a classical guitar background so it's stuck in his mind to use "a" for ring finger.

  • @KZFisher oh I see, thanks for the explanation man.

  • fingerstyle can be done on electric, but a 45mm nut width is preferred for fingerstyle to allow more room for your fingers to breathe. You may find it abit crampedwith a 43mm nut width.

  • fingerpicking is difficult to learn

  • he's blinking..very fast!!!!!!!!!1

  • is that possible apply the fingerstyle on a stratocaster, without distortion? I'm very interested in play this kind of style on eletric guitar.

  • @MatheusMendonca1 Sure, you should check out guitar players like Chet Atkins, he's well known for finginerpicking on an electric.

  • I was starring at him without blinking when i was practicing with him XD

you are good in fingering XD

    nice lessons.. thanks XD

  • Ha... he's fingering A minor..

  • @Fallingintoregret01 woooowwww if only i could press the like button a thousand times!!!!!

  • Dust in the Wind is a perfect song to practice this style on. I recommend it as a first fingerstyle venture to any guitarist.

  • great thank you!

  • you look like Micheal Jackson..Beat it

  • excellent! thanks for the tips on finger motion for picking, sounds much better than what i was doing before. great lesson for newbies.

  • i learned way more from you than i did from anyone else :) thanks!

  • Hey Antonie, ever since I head you play on youtube I've become a fan of your playing style. I'm a beginner on the guitar and I highly appreciate you making this video and I really look forward to more tutorials from you. It's a blessing for poor students like me who just wanna learn. Cheers!!!

  • He looks really nervous talking in front of cameras. But when he plays I don't even think he realizes he's being filmed.

  • i wear contacts, and i can hold a stare for like 5 minutes if i wanted to, because the contacts keep your eyes hydrated. thats one to win a staring contest. antoine however is wearing glasses. hmmm....

  • I have a question

Why when I want to follow a song that I learned the notes came to be mistaken with a time or note, but when I play without following the song I play better?

  • i love guitar i have a guiat but i have not teachen you are very good - pozdrowienia from POLEN :)

  • @katarzynam100

nie mówi się from Polen tylko from Polska xD

  • it kinda sounds like a form of travis picking near the end there.

  • i love how he always looks like hes going to jump through my screen and maul me.

  • @ chriscruse1989 see, this is exactly what untalented guitarists say. They only do it for women. That's just a bunch of BS. You probably suck at guitar anyway.

  • I've started doing that first part daily - the one finger at a time - great way to focus on tone. Thank you.

  • Carpet DETECTED.

  • Great intro on the basics, thanks. I can tell you have a classical background.

  • How did Antoine originally get affiliated with Candyrat? Did they find him or did he send them his music? I'm just curious.

  • la guitarre electrique concentre plus sur la placement des doigt sur le fretboard et la dexterité donc lacoustic est est inverser

  • Merci beaucoup Antoine!

Tu es un super prof, et j'aime bien ton accent.

  • That picking pattern at the end is the one for Dust In The Wind.

  • Ton anglais fait dur en tabarnak mais bon video

  • but I learned something so its all cool but I thought you had to have short fingernail to play guitar mine are like all notthere

  • only on the fretting hand, but for fingerstyle the picking hand (right if your right handed) needs nails to properly pick the strings

  • The finger nails are creeping me out

  • @cadevereaux they are fake nails

  • @Daver869 why is a guy wearing fake nails, thats not strange at all.

  • @cadevereaux I didnt say it was strange, that's what makes his guitar sound loud! :D

  • @cadevereaux oh okay well I guess my guitar will not sound as loud lol

  • glad to see I'm not the only one with the 1000 yard stare... hell of a guitar player though

  • Damn does he ever blink!? I knew he was a robot...

  • I never knew you had an accent!!!

  • yeah, that's a funky frenchman! (french-canadian)

  • man that was great!!!! I loved it!!!It was awsome!! Man I love you accent!!

  • Thank you soooooo much mr. dufour! ive been looking forever for videos that demonstrate how to play this style. keep 'em comin!

  • does this work well on women?

  • Fantastic Antoine.. more please!

  • Dream Theater Shirt?

  • Hells fucking yeah it is!

  • Hahah! :D

  • If you watch his FAQ video, he wears an Atreyu shirt.

  • Thanks man. Great tutoring

  • i had no idea he was french haha. he's still the man

  • canadian i belive.

  • French canadian

  • 66 666 views !!

  • once again i like your "Dreamtheater" shirt but rush is the best ever

  • Great videos, excellent technique, these instructions are quite useful seeing how there aren't many (decent) fingerstyle guitar teachers around the world.

However, I'd really like to administer a Voigt-Kampff test on him, just to make sure.

  • He has like a death stare when playing lol.

  • this guy doesn't blink

  • He's French -- we're all crazy.

  • LMFAO I know I'm laughing my ass off after I read your commnet then watched him

  • @mrvinhvo @ 3:48 he blinks ;) i shocked all the time :D

nice video! thx for the tips!

  • @mrvinhvo ROFL

  • @mrvinhvo tu doi parlez francais dans tes videos

  • @mrvinhvo I lost that battle!! hahahaha

  • @mrvinhvo he isn't a human.

  • He has Dream Theater T-Shirt?

  • lol at 2.57 sounds very much like the start of metallica- nothing else matters

  • he also blinks at 0:36

he doesnt blink that much though

  • no no he blinks at 2:12 lol

  • you are a great teacher

  • o-o; this guy doesnt blink for o_O;; freak ;D but awesome guitarist

  • THATS WHAT IT IS. I always noticed something different about him but I could never put my finger on it. Wow. He really doesnt.

  • Thank you, Antoine! Right on. Merle Travis would be proud.

  • AWESOME MAN, great job, this helps alot

  • NICE T-SHIRT ANTOINE!!!!

  • This guy must be too focused to blink

  • or maybe he's a reptilian?

  • ha ha ha, he looks so serious!

  • Awesome lesson! =]

  • nothing else matters anyone? 2:25

  • e minor, in fact

  • I totally always pull instead of making like I'm closing my fist. Thanks for the free lesson. Way more affordable than $75 an hour! I totally would if I had the money though.

  • Wow, it's going to be difficult to break my self taught habbits! Thank you for the instruction. ~Josh

  • DREAM THEATER

  • Oh if anyone wanted to know you can use this picking pattern for "Dust in the Wind". It's a good song to practice this exercise with.

  • An artist that's willing to help share his knowledge, I love it! Please do keep it coming, and be SURE to make it known when you have an instructional DVD out.

  • Hey thanks for sharing this lesson.. please please more..

    ;-)

  • Love your Dream Theater Shirt :-)

  • Nice lamp. ;)

Awesome lesson though. It's this really basic stuff and the reasoning that a lot of instructional videos leave out.

  • aaaah merci bien :) Je suis sur que tu aides beaucoup de personnes! MERCI

  • Really useful information! Thank you very much for sharing!

  • Put up some more videos... you have only done one basic exercises lol plase :)

  • Excelent video, I learned a lot.

  • lol i never noticed - he's wearing a Dream Theater shirt.

  • Thanks for your help, I really really needed help finding day to day exercises.

I'm just a beginner at finger picking.

  • I love his style of playing guitar, I appreciate that jurisdiction, where I live here in a neighborhood of the suburb of Sao Paulo, is not someone who can teach me to play like you, so it's really important to know some of the secrets and techniques of Antuaine Dufour, thank you and good party!

Ps: my English is weak xD!

  • You're the best - Cheers!!

  • Thank u!!

  • i think the part where you're talking about travis picking on the Am is the only time you've ever probably screwed up haha. thanks for the vid these exercises are helpful

  • lol i always made that nasty sound. i'm happy to know the correct way now! thanks!

  • Merci beaucoup pour ce vidéo Antoine. Tu dois faire (ou pouvoir faire) pas mal d'argent en donnant des cours privé et c'est très sympatique de diffuser ces leçons gratuitement sur Internet.

    +1 karma pour toi

  • btw that was a response to xG1NOx's comment a few posts down. sorry to debate on your page man. thanks so much for doing what you do. i look forward to hearing more and learning more from you!

  • use should put out an instructional dvd. That be cool.

  • Thanks a zillion for this video. The way you explain it, is just awsome.

    Thanks once again.

  • It's great that you make these videos, Antoine! You are an inspiration to many, and the fact that you help people out like this is very big of you! Makes you an even better role model :)

  • can anyone tell me the tuning he uses? sound like e minor?

  • he's playing with a standard tuning...it sounds minor because he's playing only the E,G,B,E strings

  • thanks man

  • You seem nervous, relax man :)

Very cool video by the way

    Thanks a lot for it!

  • he's not nervous, he's french (i think), so english isn't exactly his first language

  • Thanks for the tutorial Antoine,

I want to suggest you to make tutorial DVD's for each of your songs

shot with 2 cameras showing both hands and played really slowly so we could see what's going on and sell it.

I mean isn't it easier for you to record a video rather than writing tabs.Of course you could bundle the tabs into the DVD,too.I'm sure you would get more exposure than Skype Lessons and make a fortune:)I for one would buy all your tutorial DVD's!

Same goes for Andy McKee.Hint hint..Cheers

  • no offense but your obvioslty not a musician. because musicians make music to enjoy making music, not for fame or fortune, but to enjoy it and hope that other people enjoy it too.

the fact that he posts these vids to teach is 5 steps above the regular musician.

  • so you're saying that he should be a "regular musician"? thats a good thing to try and tell people to do, be a regular musician. and how in the world is posting instructional videos on youtube (free for everyone to view) trying to gain fortune?? a musician is somebody who makes music. fortunately he is willing to try to help others become better musicians without worrying about making money...

  • he sounds Portuguese.

  • hes canadian

  • dude canadians are french

  • he looks so serious.

  • Seriously awesome.

  • cool man but were u nervious? i noticed u kinda nervious btw excellent exercises they will help me a lot!! :)

  • Is he russian?

  • lol he's canadian

  • FRENCH Canadian.

Most of Canada do not speak like that, or even French for that matter.

  • he's still canadian

  • Actually, he comes from Quebec, it is very common for people from Quebec to speak with that accent.

  • WAIT hes fingering a minor???????????AAAAAHGHGHGHGHG!!!!

    i couldn't help myself

  • Lol I thought the same thing as well Chip !!

But he's bloody such a gifted guitar player and also has worked very hard for it !

  • Antoine, i'm a classical player that has been getting into fingerstyle a lot lately, im curious in classical i've always been taught never to brace your fingers while playing because it causes tension in the muscles in your hand and can slow you down a little. at around 5:20 - 5:40 it looks like your bracing on the 1st string. In fingerstyle does the bracing matter as much or would you just say its more of personal preference?

  • It's a Stonebridge 23-CR.

  • Thanks this is going to help a lot.

  • Holy shit! he's wearing Dream Theater T-shirt. Good exercise about emphasizing each string

  • Good call Gaudamn! That's the first thing I noticed!

  • Are you gonna make more exercises for us?? I hope so. I personally would like to learn that 3-finger technique from reed's breakdown. Or some more on you techniques used in Existence.

    Thanx !!!

  • robertbright777, I agree with you.

  • Thanks for sharing your talent with the world man, we need some good guitar teachers. Some people are really good on guitar but wont share there talent with others I guess it because there afaid someone might get better than them, but there's always someone better or can be better.

  • i love dream theater to!

  • even though he's such a talented guitarist, and even though he knows, he looks nervous while speakin doesn't he? it mustnt be easy to be speaking in front of a cammera teaching guitar lessons huh. nice job antoine i really admire your work, but when you play with tommy, wow, that's beyond good. (i love spiritual groove)

  • hell yeah, he's wearing a Dream Theater t-shirt!

  • haha ya right. i use picks lol.

  • then buy one ;)

  • dude u have killing eyes..

  • i agree... lol

  • whahaha, omg! why did you say that!

Now I'm to distracted to listen

  • I think it is just that they are dark and he doesn't blink very often. People are used to seeing lots of blinking. That's all. He must have good eye lubrication.

  • I was trying to reply to a comment about his eyes but it jumped to the top of the list. Antoine you are a good teacher and an excellent player. Thank you very much for sharing your technique with us. Imagine, people the world over can learn from you. That is amazing!

  • Your guitar sounds amazing.

  • At 3 Minutes in, if he were to Finger back up the strings, it would be the beginning of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica

  • It's just the root and top 'half' of an Em

  • holy crap lol the beginning didnt appear... this is the part thats missing "here's a tip for all u beginners, the last..." and then continues w/ the last comment i posted x)

  • fingerstyle antonie showed u is the same one that is used on the "dust in the wind" song by kansas just play the C chord and the Am chord just alternate the 2nd string frets every 4 beats [btw change chords every 8 beats], so its 1/2 0/2 3/2 1/2 0/2 3/2 1/2 n so on and so forth till the lyrics begin :)

  • dude you sound like pickles from deathklok

  • just a little request from a fan of yours...if you ever get a spare moment can you do a basic right-hand exercise vid??

  • heheh...you've got a sick accent dude.

  • Should we expect any more of these videos from you Antoine? I know it's been a year since you've posted one, but the title "Basic Fingerstye Exercices 1" suggest that there will be more. That is all.

  • Are you from Quebec? I like your accent lol.

    Thanks for the lessons!
