  • When i deadlift, my quads seem to get into it too. Maybe theyre overdeveloped since ive been playing soccer for more than 8 years

  • Elliot please can you view my back squat on my channel and let me knw if that is ok :?

  • 20 degrees...? ...are you sure...? ...given that straigt legs are 180 degrees, 20 degreess is having your heels toughing your ass... ...did you mean perhaps 90 + 20 degrees...? ...i don't want to be smart - it just doesn't sound right to be only 20...

  • @TheYouwontgetit He means 20 degrees from your legs being completely straight. In the angle he drew its actually 160 degrees ( 180degrees - 20 degrees)

  • looks more like 110 degrees

  • excuse me the 2o DEGREES sounds awesome, oops

  • the 20% deal sounds awesome and I can understand the power and idea behind more thoroughly engaging the glutes and lessening the application of the lower back. Problem is with a 6' 3" guy like me, it's tremendously difficult to say anywhere near 20 degrees- even with decently long arms. I suppose this is one of the reasons why you don't see a lot of 6' 3" to 6' 6" power lifters, but suggestions anyway? thanks

  • u said if hip flexors are strong ur lower back probably hurts and yeh its true that is the case with me ive done 140kg squats about parallel at my best bust deadlift wise 180kg for about 4 and that was really hitting my lower back someone watching said I use my lower back too much much otherwise i could lift more.... so can you please help yeh i know i need to find the sweet spot good video but any more tips for me to rectify this shit.

  • i feel im a little shorter.. or my arms are a little shorter so i feel i have to bend much more than other people.. =\ i feel i use to much back when i lift.. thats whats keeping me to lift more.. any advice of how people who are a little shorter or around the arms that needs to bend alot more than guys with longer arms can reach the bar with out bending those knees to much i feel my lower back is my weakpoint.so want to be using it as little as possible. i can see it when i look at my maxvideo

  • @m3g1 wtf? Most shorter people are considerably CLOSER to the bar than taller lifters. That's one of the big reasons why world class pwer lifters are 6' and under. They're bending and moving the weight a shorter distance. Now you may have sig shorter arms that don't help, but generally you shouldn't be doing a lot of bending to grab a typical olympic bar with plates.

  • any tips for tall lanky deadlifters?

  • where can i go for places to like "teach" you correct form and anything? i mean i go to ballies and all the people there dont know shit about form

  • Good stuff.

  • you messed up the angle part. the angle you drew would be 160. the 20 would be the angle between the line drawn up from the shin and the top of the thigh.

  • "i pick heavy shit off the floor for a living" hahaha

  • "Their biggest ass-et" LOL

  • what are some stretches for tight hipflexers?

  • how is that a 20 degree angle.........does he mean 120 degree???

  • @zulu2829 yeah he should have drawn the arc on the other side. it meand 20deg from a straight leg position (180deg) so the angle is 160

  • 'I lie I don't go the gym'

  • great video series but i would like, without taking the P***, 20 degrees? the way you have drawn it does not make sense but i think i getcha

  • neglecting their biggest asset, which is their ass! classic.

  • yo elliot, i have a question what are the pros and cons of doing wide stance and normal stance deadlifts, wich one is it easier to do heavier weight with?

    thanks man

     -- jon

  • elliot is da man :)

  • This is a brilliant explanation! The X-pattern where the abs and hamstrings balance each other and the extensors of the spine balance with the quads and hip flexors. I don't know if Panjabi could have explained it better. People need to listen to you because you can pick up heavy shit and not hurt yourself or blow out a disc doing it.

  • Elliott, Gunjack238 is right. The angle you marked is 140 degrees, the angle you're referring to is that created between the vertical axis and the thighs. Nevertheless, amazingly informative stuff there. Your reference to the ASS-et was great!!!

  • A classic example are taller athletes with long legs. How would you overcome this - raise the load onto boxes? I'm keen to hear how you you would deal with taller/longer legged athletes and deadlifting

  • Yo Elliot! Great video(s) mate. I completely agree about the 'sweet spot' concept, HOWEVER I think a large problem for a lot of lifters (with respect to the deadlift) is related to the fact that when they find that 'sweet spot' their physical proportions wont necessarily allow them to reach the bar on the floor; therefore in order simply to pick the bar up the angle ends up being far less than ideal, thus injuries and non-optimal performance...

  • "I'm a Strongman, I pick heavy shit of the floor for a living"! lol awsome

  • If you already have tight hamstrings, how do you fix them?

  • @run18play stretch em'

  • @run18play do some pnr or some other sort of assisted stretching,

  • @run18play deadlifts, full range of motion

  • Nice video series, coach. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful approach. It's worth mentioning here, however, the distinction between tight hamstrings due to hypertonicity vs. chronically lengthened hamstrings that feel tight. If the hams feel tight because of "Donald Duck Syndrome" (lower crossed postural distortion pattern with anterior pelvic tilt resulting in lengthened hamstrings), the proper remedy is more likely to stretch the psoas, returning the pelvis to a neutral position so that...

  • ...the hamstrings can function from an optimal length. In this case, stretching the hams, which are already in a lengthened and weakened state, might make the problem worse.

  • @MrBabyReyes thick bar holds for time.

  • im so glad i found u elliot....you deserve WAY more viewers

  • Big Thick Ass Glutes lol

  • lol i pick heavy shit off the floor for a living. nice. just curious as what your PB is in the deadlift. i would guess maybe 700 lbs.

  • @KingRockets yea, i think it was close... like 660ish. i gotta check... i was one day in a pair of jeans just messin around lol

  • @MrBabyReyes Hold heavy shit more often. Simple. You shouldn't be deading that often anyways.

  • 2:44 brain fart? lmao

  • Elliot, the heavier the weights get for me in the deadlift, the quicker my ass pops up at the begining of my deadlift. In turn causing my deadlift to become more of a straight leg dead.

What is the cause? And what can correct it?

  • @UofO08 you actually need to use more quads in your lift... i tell my athletes to focus on keeping their ass down as long as possible and aiming the top of their head to the ceiling to correct this.

  • thats supposed to be 160 degrees man lol just sayin

  • @Gunjack238 wow! really? id like to know what joint is extending beyond 90 degrees? lol just askin

  • @strengthcamp I didnt mean 160 deg bend in the knee I was talkin about the angle u were showin on the board which is the conjugate of the 20 deg ur talkin about

  • @strengthcamp OW!!!!

    burn haha

  • @strengthcamp lol you just drew the angle on the wrong side of the leg. the angle you are showing is indeed 160 degrees. but yeah we still get what you mean by the 20 degrees.

  • @KingRockets ah! okay, im still kinda confused... im actually mildly retarded when it comes to math, so please forgive me :)

  • thank you Elliot, this is good stuff

  • This is a really good video series. can you do the same type of explaination for squats? that would be amazing. my squat is stuck around 500 for olympic style and i want to know if theres any tweaking i can do to perform better.

  • @linemen77 eh... maybe.

  • @strengthcamp come on you know if people's deadlifts are busted there squats are as well. lol

  • its crazy because my hip flexers are tight now and my lower back hurts too

  • Great stuff Elliot, the Deadlift has always been my favorite exercise too! i love learning new things about it and all of its benefits! i my opinion if you dont deadlift, you dont grow!

  • Elliot, do you have a degree in some type of medicine cause you sure know a lot more then most of the doctors I have gone to

  • @hahabendover haha he sure does know his stuff. hell hes smarter than most guys at my gym anyways but thats not sayin much when you workout at the ymca haha

  • @hahabendover most MDs are educated by a system designed to facilitate sickness (the pharmaceutical industry) so, they are never exposed to ideas about actually improving performance in healthy people.. just how to point out dysfunction (or fake disease) and prescribe pills... I just lift heavy shit and teach others how to do likewise.

  • @strengthcamp agreed!

  • @strengthcamp TRUTH

  • The world needs people like Elliot Hulse educating and inspiring others with top quality, no BS information.

    Absolute Bad ass-ness!

  • Elliot.... I can't believe how informative your videos are. I have questions regarding my body that run through my mind all the time, and when I watch your videos, you answer them. I am the person you described with the really tight hip flexors whose back hurts all the time. I also learned a lot about why my shoulder hurts when you described people with tight pic minors and underdeveloped opposing/balancing muscles. I can't thank you enough for making these informative and entertaining videos.

  • @gitterfritter thats awesome news! i'm happy that my videos have helped you... keep up the great work.

  • @strengthcamp , I also agree with gitterfritter, and my deadlift is my fav excersize iv only been training about 10-12mnth and have been deadlifting around 115-125kg and recently my lower back has been tight and hurting slightly , also my right shoulder has a kinda deep "hot" feeling when im not training and notice it feels like its crunching inside wen i rotate it :/ .... so after watching this vid im guessing maybe its cos my back is too rounded and my legs aint bent enuf? .

  • nice bro. i learned alot

  • jeuj

  • You are a friggin' font of lifting knowledge. I'm loving this deadlift series.

  • You are a friggin' font of lifting knowledge. I'm loving this deadlift series.

  • Thanks for the video. I am starting to deadlift for the first time and can not wait so this is perfect for me!

  • God, I thought I could have got the first comment :(

  • Excellent!
