  • Our master at work..

  • WE NEED MORE LIGAYA FERNANDO-AMILBANGSAS !

Lest this dance and art go the way of the dodo...

Kudos to Ms. Amilbangsa and for posting this video. :-D

  • The video of the ACTUAL performance should have been posted, NOT this.

  • This was obviously a practice session NOT meant to be publicized. Was she even aware this rehearsal would be videotaped and uploaded on youtube?

To anyone with more than a passing familiarity with Ms. Amilbangsa's performances, it is GLARINGLY OBVIOUS that she is NOT dancing at performance level in this video. The energy that is so characteristic of her is simply not there.

It is unfair that her ability is being judged through a rehearsal video which I don't think she knew about.

  • A COPY-CAT! i think ur gud as mentor and promoter of PANGALAY but not good enough as u perform. see tiyula itum video.

  • @me777ism You have to give Ligaya Amilbangsa credit for actually writing the book on Pangalay. Before she even wrote the book on Pangalay i doubt ANY SAMA OR TAUSUG even thought of documenting their traditions found throughout the Sulu archipelago. Those tiyula itum videos are great BUT why aren't they dancing to the traditional tagunggu ensemble music? why does everything have to be synthesized nowadays???

  • @Bernard1981 no doubt that her effort is very much appreciated. my apology for the copycat word but in my opinion with her due respect she is more expert in teaching, documenting, preserving but not as performer.

my point is, Pangalay can no longer perform by older person. just compare to the performer of tiyulah itum videos they are young and graceful. the rules is short and simple: "Dance a PANGALAY while you're still young. when you grow old, better teach to the next generation."

  • Linggisan is a one of the dances of Pangalay, a dance style in danger of becoming extinct. Even in Tawi-Tawi, not too many dance it now because the elders, from whom Mrs. Amilbangsa had the good fortune of learning it, have died. The discussion on what is research, conservation, correct, authentic, bastardize etc. should be in a proper forum. And defining Pangalay is best done in a live forum where people can both talk & dance. Watch this video without music to see the Pangalay dance form.

  • great dance...need to be researched. the beatings here are not authentic for this kind of pangalay, linggisan. pangalay linggisan must have the romanticism, solemnity and modesty. the beating of kulintang is not in harmony with the dance itself...

  • @neldyjolo i agree with you bro,,, we appreciate Ms ligaya for her research and conservation but we should put into consideration, as a conservationist that we should pass the correct and authentic information to next generation not the wrong and corrupted informations.

  • @neldyjolo : Since I'm the one playing the kulintangan in this video, let me explain my side to not sounding "authentic." you're right. We were off beat .... simply because I taught the Pakaraguian ensemble musicians how to play the accompanying patterns for the very first time in this video. Second I know this is the traditional piece for Linggisan because originally its a dance vocal genre sung by bantots. However, I only learned how to play the tunis Apas Apas from the Tambuli group

  • @Bernard1981 excuse I mean i know this tunis Apas Apas isn't the traditional piece for linggisan. By the way, if you want to talk more about "authentic" kulintangan music, please message me because I'd like to exchange info with you. I wrote a masters thesis on the Sama kulintangan tradition Tawitawi. How about you?

  • splendid

  • i have to commend her for her effort in dancing lingisan that way, though it needs to be more refined and smooth. My mother have seen during weddings how lingisan was performed and she said its smoother than this and always follow the gong as it is played.

  • @ashboy039 ms. ligaya amilbangsa is 67 years old (maybe it's not an excuse). her years of researched, deconstruction, conservation and development of pangalay as a dance form is epic.

    peace! :)

  • @angelinthefarm no doubt that we appreciate her for all her efforts. But pangalay is one tradition that most of us takes pride on as it has been with us for many generations. So please excuse me for making this comment. But i think its only right that some traditions need to remain as it is irregardless of the changes that is coming our way.
