Well you have to decide R or S for each chiral carbon separately. The first thing to do is rank the four atoms attached to a chiral carbon according to highest atomic weight. If there is more than one certain atom, you find the point of difference and then rank again according to atomic weight. Once you have prioritized all four groups, you position the molecule so that the lowest priority group is either pointing away from you as a dashed line or toward you as a wedge. Then you decide if 1 to
great thanks so much! my textbook and class notes are very limited on which molecules i'm supposed to have eclipsed. This clarrified things! Good luck with medicine!
Hi! I started to work with, and i wonder if you could help me to repesent (..like a molecular skelleton) 2,4-metil-pentanol. Because I started to have some troubles whit this, (I have a cuestion, which are the diferences between C-C, C-H and -OH links and how can i represent them with out words, i hear that one way is using lines like this ++++ for covalent links i think..
Please, Sorry but i´m from mexico so, let me know if i don´t explain me so well. thanks a lot!!
@FulgorXTL Hey, sorry I haven't checked this in a while! Do you mean 2,4-dimethylpentanol? If you are doing the skeleton structure, than you are basically just drawing lines for carbon - carbon bonds. So intersections, bends, and the ends of lines represent tetrahedral carbons. Let me know if a picture would help
Wow you're awesome!

Thanks! I'm reviewing for the mcat and I forgot how to do these >.<
I was just forgetting to turn it to the eclipsed conformation.

So what's up with the R/S naming? I don't know how to do that with 2 chirality centers..

awesomely explained! thank you!

The dashes do mean going away from you or into the paper. Let me know how I can help
mcmillanlacey 10 months ago
i thought the dashesmeant the molecule is going back in to the paper

could you do chiral molecules next

You explained it so beautifully!
My teacher taught to me to go from the staggered side view directly to Fischer and that plainly confused me. This way more clear.
Thanks!

Oh okay, good. Yeah, I'm a biology major pre-med, so I'll be applying to medical school soon. What school do you go to?

Hi mcmillanlacey! yes it is 2,4-dimethylpentanol, and thanks but it was for a school project, and I finished : )
I apresiate a lot your answer.
I read that you´re at University of the Incarnate Word, what carrer are you stuying??
Im stuying environmental technology
So, have a nice day and see you
