I used to listen to Radio Trent, Nottingham, late at night in bed back in 1980, the radio presenter played this or Home Thoughts From Abroad by Clifford T. Ward quite often. I was 17 then. These two songs still blow me away now. Oh, and looking at a few examples of this song on YouTube, no-one can compare to Colin Blunstone.
Don't just read "these" lyrics ... this is the Colin Blunestone (sorry about spelling) version -- very subtly but importantly different! In this version (the recorded one) sings, "When the final curtain falls before my eyes, when I'm old and wise." Eric actually wrote that line as "final curtain LIFTS before my eyes", which completely changes the character of the work. I found it here on YouTube, go look it up.
"You, Jane. I, Robot." There's a twisted cartoon lurking in there, somewhere. ATBA!
I've been an APP fan for DECADES, most of my presents have been APP albums -- This like hearing about John Lennon: shocking, stunning. Very sad.
But I have long ago decided that when I die, I want this played at my ceremony, if there is one. I may never get old *AND* wise, but this song appreciates my friends. And without them, I would be nothing.
All the best, always, Eric! You have made me laugh and weep for decades! I have been, and always shall be, your friend!

The funeral was Sad and happy, Her mother was very sick, and now they dont have that trouble anymore, and my girldfriend self Sang a song, and she sang Beautiful.
good song haven't heared in quite some time , however any one noticed something? voice ? i would not be surprised at all if this is not the original but the cover made by edward reekers the singer from kayak. he made a complete parson cover album called songbook of alan p. recorded in gemany with former manager of app playing on keys. i got it and aft hearing a few times i only noticed the voice was just not the real 1. f*ing well done tho

one of the most beautiful lyrics ever written.
I have no clue as whether the composer is 'old' or not, but unquestionably wise!

I Loved her,and i lost her
But yet for a time, I was Kingof the world
as i heard her whisper,
i am yours as you are mine. Perhaps now that i'm older and perhaps a little more wise, That someday she will come back to me
and wipe the tears from my eyes.

We all grow old, from the day we were born. We do not all grow wise. This is such a wonderful song. Thank you for the post.

Het is inderdaad een pracht nummer. Een nummer dat zelfs sterker is dan de dood en ervoor zorgt dat een geliefde altijd zal blijven voortleven!

Many consider this song as the great masterpiece of The Alan Parsons Project.
Read the lyrics, listen to the song and you will understand why.
Cheers.
