  • You are welcome, Alonzo. I am your cousin, indeed. Going onto ancestry.com, I see how deep are my roots in England, as I traced mom's ancestors back to 800 AD, the time of Alfred the Great. In fact, Alfred the Great WAS her ancestor, and mine.

  • i suggest everyone get dna tested if you are not british then you should fuck off......woah there wouldnt be anyone left would there...?

  • @lumpfish99 only the originals

  • @jazzas90000 who queen boudica and the druids?

  • @lumpfish99 Britain didn't exist during that era.

  • @lolatmyaccounts well it exists today which by your logic would mean everyone living there is british right?

  • @lumpfish99 I never stated any logic, you made up your own logic which could be forced into my statement.

  • @lolatmyaccounts er....right.

  • @lumpfish99 yeah theyd be civilized brits by now

  • @jazzas90000 Civilised? are you a fucking idiot? dont you watch the news? dont you read history? you dont even have to go back too far, as long as your in your teens you would know about the crimes that country has been involved in.

  • @lumpfish99 ok now im a little lost the druids dont know much bout them only they got defeated by romans and were i think from wales so your saying that wales has commited a load of crimes yeaaaaahhhhh ooook wales has commited crimes whatever you say angry internet man

  • @jazzas90000 as you said you dont know much about the druids....i suggest since you seem to care so much then go read a little it may help you......ignorant internet man.

  • @lumpfish99 ok you seem really pissed off about something for no reason dont know if youv just lost your girlfriend or was beaten as a child but stop being so angry wjay the hell are you so angry about and im actually pretty good at history just not the druids there not the most famous history subject are they

  • @jazzas90000 You are the one who assumed im angry.

  • @lumpfish99 just the way you were typing i replied to a comment and you got all bitchy ..forget it now ............peace

  • I vowed to MY COUNTRY when I was born and I will vow until my DEATH.

God gave me a wonderfull gift when he made me BRITISH.

  • Greatest Top- the "other country" is our heavenly home from which we came at birth "trailing clouds of glory" as Wordsworth wrote. Those of us who believe this hold that belief dear-"most dear to those who love her..."

The armies of heaven are the angelic warriors and her King is Christ- get the gist? So glad you asked: its part of what makes this piece so other-worldly (along with the fact that it came from Holst's Planet Suite!)

  • Can anyone tell me what does these lines in the song mean:

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,

    Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;

    We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;

    Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;

And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,

And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

  • @GreatestTop The other country heard of long ago is a reference to the Kingdom of Heaven. See Proverbs 3:17.

  • @GreatestTop Yes it means the Kingdom of Heaven. It was originally written as a poem by a British diplomat to Sweden called Cecil Spring-Rice in 1908. It was called "Urbs dei" which means "The Two Fatherlands" and basically talked about the conflicting duties a person has between serving their country and serving God. He re-wrote the poem in 1918 to make it relevant to WW1 and the huge numbers of British soldiers killed. The final line is taken from Proverbs, chapter 3 verse 17.

  • This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye and make me feel so proud to be British, no other modern country can lay claim to the achievements we can. Long live Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth and long live the might United Kingdom of Great Britain!

  • BRING BACK SECOND VERSE YOU TRAITOR

  • There are really only two peoples on this Earth

One is the mighty, the other is fallen

One is the industrious, the other is the primitive

One with hearts of gold, the other with hearts of rock

There are two peoples upon this Earth:

Those who are British, and those who are not.

  • @winstonchurchill95 its 2011 not 1922 unfortunatly

  • this or jerusalem is our anthem from a proud geordie

  • It seems to be pretty unanimous and I agree that this should be our National Anthem!

  • @arsenaljustliffuk....Jerusalem is the English national anthem. God Save The Queen is the British national anthem.

  • Its Holtz Jupiter Suite beautifully arranged and sung

  • britain, i bow down to thee.

  • Although God save the queen is a strong athem/hymm or whatever but i can help but think with all the others we have such as this one we have ended with the worse as Englands national anthem, For me Jerusalem should be our Anthem.

  • I love this hymn, I like many others think this should be the UKs national anthem. Why do Britain always bow to people who would perceive to find offence where there is none.

Also why would this hymn be sung to American soldiers overseas?

    Thank you for the post.

  • Play Elizabeth in Civ V and you hear this. Beautiful. Sample: watch?v=hh8IlJLBNnY

  • I wonder if this would be inappropriate to sing to American soldiers overseas? It's a great song though and the sentiments transcends our respective countries.

  • I remember singing this in school, thanks for posting this! It brought a tear to my eye.

  • Superb.

  • I've always enjoyed patriotic songs but this one, to me, rises above most of them. It's graceful lyrics and neutrality speaks universally for anyone who lives in a country and loves both the land and their fellow countrymen.

  • Imagine for a moment that this became the national anthem...

The British walk on at the 2012 Olympics, and the band plays this. People start singing it. And everyone, British or otherwise, had that look on their face of...Dear God.

Alternatively, if the BNP should ever become the government, this should be played in Trafalgar Square and the crowd reaction will be the same.

  • Just what is so wrong about the middle verse? I never understood that. Inappropriate? How so? It is a song about fighting for ones country, for ones nation and Queen. If that honestly offends anyone, then they have a problem.

  • I agree, much more appropriate than the current National Anthem. It should be implemented before the next monach is installed unless it is William.

  • First I heard this, Charlotte Church was singing it.

  • Great stuff. The lead vocal has a great voice.

  • Most beautiful.

  • you have an empire god save the commonwealth

  • Does anyone know where I can listen to the song with the middle verse? Let's be honest, we had an empire, we fought wars. Let's be proud of it.

  • Such a gorgeous song and melody! You British should be very proud of this song and of Great Britain and all its history. Spoken by an American friend.

  • @astrolog7000 Thank you our American cousin

  • well seems to be only 94865 proud british left, seems to be five traitors here as well

  • Try singing it to the tune of 'The British Grenadiers' - it scans nicely.

  • 5 peoples pride are suffering

  • Yes and I forgot the Cornish Language sorry for this why oh why anybody who is British can be against the Welsh Language is Quite frankly beyond me it is so very much part of the British Culture of all the native languages its the one still in Daily use action needs to be taken now to make sure the others ie Manx Cornish Scots and not least Irish survive the language of the Ancient Britions has been lost this must never happen to those we still have

  • this was my grandads song he got cremated to

  • THIS SHOULD BE OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM!!

  • @haMMy27691 Definitely!!

  • I recently sang Gracie Fields song Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye for Help for Heroes, would you please take a look. thank you

  • Alright, to setting this dispute, a peoples' environment dictates how they will behave. A man's land dictates his character, his identity. To take another's land is to take his identity. No man should have to give up his soul. There is nothing wrong with being patriotic, so long as you STAY HOME! If you don't buy the argument, look at all of the pictures of the landscape. It's obvious land has something to do with it.

  • @vlkvojak Patriotism is having pride in your country. That is what this song emphasises. Defending your homeland, your people etc. It emphasises pride in what you have- not the urge to take more. It is not nationalism or jingoism and therefore should be encouraged not attacked (as seems to happen nowadays).

  • Instant bookmark! Excellent stuff!

  • nothing wrong with this verse, it shows we remember the good and the bad.

one thing i will say though is that the music for this song reminds me of a song which appears on the welsh album, land of our fathers.... and the song is world in union

  • I don't get how it's inappropriate? That's got to be nonsense! Unless I'm misunderstanding the verse but it looks like respect to the fallen and pride to the country. ???

English to the end and proud of it!

  • I love my country I dont care who it offends

  • I'm American by birth, German by ancestry, and British by spirit. I love your traditions and sense of dignified pride. I hope to visit your country soon and stay for a while.

  • Don't hate guys... I'm Welsh and I like the English. What WalesIloveya is trying to say, I think, is that we work well together and that every nation of the United Kingdom should be credited. :)

  • Haha. What you mean Just England. England would be unknown without Wales, Scottland and Island.

  • @walesiloveya LMAO ARE YOU TAKING THE PISS? We had colonies, a small Empire, trading posts, we defeated the Spanish and French Navies to become the worlds best Naval power WAY BEFORE 1707! Scotland was semi-known by Netherlands & Spains MONARCH etc but not recognised as a problem, also it's IRELAND not Island, Ireland isn't a part of Britain, Northern Ireland is though.

    Wales? With your infertile soil?

I'm bored of you cunts hating England, learn some history and stop with the jealousy LMAO.

  • @walesiloveya Island= EPIC FAIL and youre a cunt btw

  • @liampw20 ahahahahahahaaaaa fuck off your cunt and speak english btw haha if you going to replay to me dont text talk you twat and epic fail in caps tbh thats fucking sad

  • @walesiloveya errr ok then, I am amazed by your stupidity, arrogance and appalling English. I am English so don't tell me how to speak my own language. The country you were trying to spell is Ireland ok, Island refers to land surrounded by water, not the country you thick twat. oh and btw (yeah that IS text speak) what do you mean by 'fuck off your cunt'? do you mean 'fuck off YOU cunt' because I dont have a cunt.

  • @walesiloveya I LOVE WALES NORTHERN IRELAND CORNWALL SCOTLAND THE ISLE OF MANN AND ENGLAND THE WELSH LANGUAGE NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT IN ALL BRITISH SCHOOLS ALONG WITH MANX IRISH AND SCOTS THEY ARE ALL PART OF THESE ISLANDS = UNDER G-D AND HM THE QUEEN

  • @burnley5960 yea mate i agree with you :)

  • this should be the national anthem for the uk

  • I suppose this song could apply to any country, when you think about it.Because its sung in English we take it to refer to Britain. Shame they could not put the name of the country in it somewhere!

  • @georgeamery Believe it or not it was written by an Irishman who was ambassador to the US for what was then the whole United Kingdom.

  • @freebeerfordworkers The writer of this song (sir Cecil Spring-Rice). Was born in London and raised an Englishman. You try and tell people who were born and raised in America or Britain or Ireland that they are not American or British or Irish.

  • @NumberDne YouTube returns to haunt you! How long since I posted that?

  • I love this hymn and I love England. I'm a U.S. citizen and I wish we had all the Royal Family and all the wonderful history. I pray that England will do what it takes to regain its greatness of the past. This England!

  • Probably for the same reason that there are those here in the United States who want to change our national anthem to God Bless America because The Star Spangled Banner is to war like. Our two countries would not be great countries had we not had those who were and are willing to step into the breach and fight for our freedoms,. Including those that wish to be stupidly politically correct.

  • the tune to this is Gustav Holst's Jupiter, from his planets. However, it was originally called Thaxted after the town he wrote it in. bit of trivia

  • @GuiseppiT And you can't get more 'English' than Thaxted!

  • @netherledy too true

  • God bless the UK.

  • There alot of nationalities with great romantic sentiments of patriotism out there, but Britain's must be the most beautiful of them all.

  • @shturmiyo it is. It is such a special great country! and nation. I am proud of this country!!!

  • England forever.

  • Holst's Planets <3

  • This song is so beautiful I actually cried.

  • @NathanH97 me too man

  • @NathanH97 Beautiful it is... now imagine singing it at a funeral, as it was for Princess Diana and as it was for a friend of mine who died young of cancer. The music is from "Jupiter" in Holst's "The Planets" and the words were written, completely independently, by a British diplomat, Sir Cecil Spring-Rice. Holst adapted his music in 1921 to make it singable... and we have this wonderful song.

  • Ive listened to this about 20 times in the past 3 days :P

  • Beautiful!!

  • I love this hymn. The first time I heard it was at Princess Diana's funeral. I don't think it is sung over here in the US, at least not in most Protestant churches.

Speaking as a proud American, I have nothing but the highest regard and deepest respect for the British people. You should be very proud to BE British. There is indeed much for you to be proud of. Go ahead, celebrate your Britishness as a previous commenter suggested. I'll be celebrating right along with you!

  • the 2nd verse is so special,it speaks for all us soldiers,i'd love to take a P.C. anker to war! watch the a soles scream!!!

  • I'm proud to be an Englishman! Fuck the all the liberals and traitors!

  • I love this hymn. I love the piece (Jupiter) it's taken from. Gustav Holst would be turning in his grave, however, if he ever heard anyone singing the last note. Do me a favour and every time you have to sing this in school or in church just refuse to sing the last note of the last verse... just for Holst...! :D

  • omg I used to sing this in middle school

    WHEN I WAS 5 OR 6!!

  • Thank you for a non-militaristic video of this. I am afraid, for me, given the continuance of the English imperial mentality of our leaders, the greatest line of all - the very last one - seems very lost in the wind.

  • Wonderful video! May we know in which countries YT blocked your video? Please tell us!

  • @Coupal1 Hello I am sorry but I do not know which countries,I was informed by YT also St George In Our Hearts is blocked.I think we may assume which ones.

  • @WhiteStarOrion Yes I agree. I think we all know which countries.

    The middle verse:

I heard my country calling, away across the sea,

Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me.

Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,

And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead.

I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns,

I haste to thee my mother, a son among thy sons.

  • @WhiteStarOrion Screw Them RULE BRITANIA AND GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

  • @WhiteStarOrion now that is racist if ever, how can it be allowed??

  • Comment removed

  • Music by Gustav Holst (from his suite The Planets), words by Cecil Spring Rice, British Ambassador to the USA 1900s.

  • Music by Gustav Holst (Jupiter, from The Planets Suite), words by Cecil Spring Rice, ambassador to the USA early 20th century.

  • We had this as the final hymn at our Wedding in September last year. After the Wedding one of our Ushers (a 50+ Dr) came and told me that it made him cry.

  • It make me crack up every time. I cant help but think of the thousands of young men who fought and died to save our freedom.

    WE FORGET TOO SOON.

  • Loving the bass at 2:07 brilliant singing

  • Hello there, Thank you for posting the middle verse. Would you please tell me why it is classed as inappropriate? I cannot see anything inappropriate about it.

  • This should really be the National Anthem here, it makes me feel more patriotic about the country.

  • beautiful,absolutely...

  • beautiful...

  • this should be our national anthem, includind third verse.bollocks to p.c.

  • It's the 23rd of April today, happy St.Georges day. This si one thing they can't take away from us

  • A shame to omit the second verse. "Inappropriate"? Bosh.

  • this should be england's national anthem, our current one is rubbish

  • Beautiful, makes me cry every time (was played at my dad's funeral)

  • I agree, besides this anthem is one made for Britain and for her alone.

Thank you Sir Cecil Spring-Rice for you patriotism and Gustav Holst for your musical genius.

  • The americans can sod off, They have "The Star apangled banner" and St Paddys day,

cry god form Harry, England and St George!"

  • I did hear our American cousins want to claim this as one of the many Anthems to the list. What do you all think?

  • TinneyBBS: This was sung by a group called G4 who were runners up in either the X Factor or Pop Idol. the Baritones name was Mathew. Alas they went thier seperate ways but are still succesful and stil meet from time to time

  • 1:33 my idea of heaven!

  • Ahhhh Britain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • who is the Baritone at 2:07???

    sooo beautiful!

  • England forever british never.

  • @creamtt separatist cock!

  • Yes Seperatist forever united never.

  • I'm afraid I must disagree :)

  • Proud to be brit

  • I dont understand why the middle verse is missed out and classed as innapropriate, we sang it yesterday with over a 1000 people at a memorial dedication

  • The middle verse refers to the war, a lot of people don't think it's appropriate to sing today, hence modern renditions usually only do the 1st and 3rd verses.

  • the song used is from the classic piece " jupiter" from the planets by gustav holst

  • Could you please tell me what version of the song this is? The intro is lovely.

  • @lauraedited Hi I tried to answer your question but my comment does not seem to have appeared. This version is by four men called G4, they have it on their album. Thanks for commenting.

  • I was at school with the grandson of Cecil Spring-Rice, (the man who wrote the lyrics for those of you who don't know!) and we were allowed to sing all three verses on certain occasions. Very powerful hymn. It was amazing to sing it as it was orginally intended :)

  • Thanks for the lyrics. Nicely done, by the way.

  • Greeting from the former colony of hong kong, we're proud of our colonial history and proud to call ourselves British !

  • This makes the hairs stand on end and eyes well up. Beautiful. God bless those that have served and those that continue to do so in our Army, Navy & Airforce. They are true patriots and pay the ultimate sacrifice.

  • A super production of this stirring number. I love hearing male voices sing these patriotic songs. Can anyone tell me please who the singers are?

  • It is easy to see where and how we Americans get oiur super patriotism-- from our Mother Country. Our Canadian cousins tend to be more reserved outwardly/

  • Proud to be a son of the Empire. This is one Canadain not bitten by the liberal demon and infected with the disease of polictical correctness.

  • To all Brits and descendants of Brits be proud and defend your country and your Queen!

  • As a Brit I say may heart felt thanks.

  • God bless you sir, nice to see at least som people hold a more Conservative view of the world.

  • We are brother nations when we have a symbol to look up to. Equal and proud. As a brit I am more proude of being a member of the commen wealth then I am of the EU or the so called "special relatioship" with the USA. I am British and I am a commenwealth citizen.

  • @deskpot1 True, but also remember that North America also has British roots. The founding fathers of the USA were British and infact 74% of USA citizens in 1790 had British ancestry so i think that is where the special relationship stems from. And obviousely Canada and Britain are family too.

  • fuck political correctness i am English and British and very proud of it ...

  • Damn Right... Rule Britannia.

  • Nicely said.

  • Pride in England is nothing to be ashamed of. All countries have bad things in their histories, that's no reason not to celebrate the good.

  • @msanniemc Hear Hear well put. GOD BLESS ENGLAND!

  • This tune is beautiful.

Political correctness is wrong because it's a form of censorship and stops people from speaking their minds. But just because it's 'un-PC' to say something, that doesn't make it right.. In that way political correctness makes racism/nationalism worse, because it's repressed, not stamped out.

  • People get angry at not being able to speak their minds, and so their views get more extreme. (There, rant over. :p)

  • Just a question...call me dumb or idiot but why the middle verse of this hymn is never used today as it is classed as inappropriate??

  • @cyranopavese , all I can say on here is ask our government,,they want to supress our pride and not upset anyone apart from British people.

  • damn polititians...

  • @WhiteStarOrion "The throne is established in righteousness" (King Solomon, Proverbs). The royal family, has one again, become exceedingly unrighteous.

  • @WhiteStarOrion FUCK YOU POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!!!!!!!!

  • @WhiteStarOrion you mean they are happy to insult or offend British people unless they are non-white?

  • @WhiteStarOrion What a load of bullshit. Its sick that anyone would take out a verse recognizing those that fought and died in places far, far away from home. Governments who make decisions like this would do well to remember who it was that sent them there in the first place.

  • @cyranopavese Because it's kind of a pretty and patriotic hymn, but the middle verse seems to be about killing people and shit :P

  • @thetoobnoob that was what happened all around thh globe,we protected more than we hurt, this song is about the first ww1,in which we stopped europe from being overun, please learn your history. we stood alone in the ww2, we are basicaly a nation , and the world owes our dead sodiers a HELL OF A LOT

  • @zeus21ish I never said that this sort of thing didn't ahpen, I do know what happened in WWI and WWII. I was merely making the point that the imagery used in the second verse probably isn't what you want to hear in a church or remembrance service in a time of solemnity

  • @cyranopavese It's inappropriate because it's explicitly talking about Britain ('her') killing people overseas with guns. That's generally seen as a bad thing these days.

  • @maureenOWW bah.... for me is BS, but it's not my job to judge this things....

  • Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love...

    Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;

And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,

And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace...

  • In the sterile pc world that Tony Blair and now Gordon Brown have created for us, I'm amazed that we can even acknowledge our Britishness at all, let alone englishness!! We should sing it loud for all the world to hear!!!!

  • @valocilf Quite right!

  • My Great Great grandfather was from England and I think this song is pretty. It is a shame people would get insulted over such a lovely verse. Shame on them! God Bless The United Kingdom, The Queen, her family and the people of her other realms and territories.

  • Sad that the middle verse is not sung. It is completely appropriate in today's world. There are many fights that are righteous and worth fighting. I think it is an insult to the young men and women willing to give their lives to defeat a deadly enemy. Sing it out, sing it loud... let those cowards who are offended be offended.

  • @kyak1

"I heard my country calling, away across the sea,

Across the waste of waters she calls and calls to me.

Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,

And round her feet are lying the dying and the dead.

I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns,

I haste to thee my mother, a son among thy sons."

Anyone that would be offended by that verse can drop dead.

  • @higgolini to me it is the great battle cry of Britain calling out to her children of the commonwealth to defend her values in the Second World War.

  • Thank you Troy. Wonderful montage with lovely music. -- Stephen

  • Wonderful hymn one of my favs.
