Mishakov was one of my coaches in hockey camp, roughly 13 years ago lol. We called him Dyadya Zhenya (Uncle Zhenya). Nice guy. Could curse up a storm though. Every other word out of his mouth was 'blyad' or some other expletive.
The funny part is, in Russian, the word 'blyad' means whore...but it's mostly used as filler.
Firstly, the Russians were NOT amateurs as they always claimed. secongly they were great hockey players in such departments as stick-handling, speed, and combination play. They could be physical as well. Remember what they did to Carl Brewer in 1967, he'd have been able to decide the game single-handedly. the two smartest Canadian coaches were Fred Shero and Mike Keenan, Scotty Bowman's record against the Russians is pitiful.
@kickass5 They wernt amature yes your right they train and train specifically for hockey just like our pros today, but they where classified as amatures in order to comply with Olympic rules, which states that its strickly for amature thats why up until 1988 hockey teams and even other sports send amatures to the competition. But the start of pro atheletes to the Olympics started in 1988 when NHL stars are aloud. Now in 2014 NHL might rule against it.
Russia won this series spiritually. The world now knew that we played the best most attractive hockey and Canada did nothing but humiliate themselves with their dirty play and ugly hockey.
Some commentators have said that for years after the series ended, a plaque stood in the arena where the USSR portion of the series was played. It stated that in an 8 game series in 1972 the USSR beat Canada 32 goals to 31.
BTW the USSR team in 1972 were dirty players and had the officials in their back pocket.
Dirty players ? Good one my Canadian friend, lol. Canada embodied dirty play and the refs were in pur pocket ? Oh a West German helped the USSR ?
Just because he penalized Canada for thug play doesn't mena he was in anyone's pocket. It's just that your Canadian refs turned a blind eye to the punching and slashing.
Rod beat Mishakov to a pulp. Also, don't forget that the Russians weren't a bunch of innocent lambs, they'd grab, push, use high sticks, etc. The Flyers gave them an unforgettable lesson in 1976, then the Sabres gave Yakushev and Co. the taste of their owm\n medicine.
I was under Soviet rule back and I hated their guts but NOBODY in the world played better hockey than Russians at that time. Canadians were absolute pigs, they went after Soviet best players with their stick like with axes. They simply removed them from the series by brutality never seen in hockey. Only Czechs could play Russians fair & square then by breaking down plays to minimum times so Russians couldn't employ their deadly, yet absolutely wonderful system. I'm Czech and play hockey in US.
How can you even say that. That is the most educated view i have ever seen. Did you not see all the cheapshots the russians pulled on the ice with the refs and what not and thats not including the hotel stunts that went on. They did everything they could to cheat to win and still couldnt. If the Canadians treated there injuries like the Russians we wouldnt have had enough players to finish because they all would have been hurt. Russia cheated more than once. More than twice and still couldnt win
I saw the series and even though I was 12 years old back then and routed against Russians, I could not but notice cheap shots CANADIANS pulled off. One must admit that Russians were really good back then. I don't want to question your knowledge of Russian hockey but I don't blame you if lack any. Many Canadians are blinded by their nationalism when it comes to hockey. What early European players had to put up with in NHL is beyond imagination, and yet they still prevailed. Take care, budd...
Gay is not good word to use - but "acting like pigs" is pretty close to the truth - yet they hate to admit it - but they all know it they did not win square and fair. All they say is that in history books, the winner is marked by name Canada. But history will also show their cowardness - thanks to tapes that could document it all. This Russian team was something else - at least 20 years ahead of everybody.
Micanut, much of the Soviet class during that series was a facade. The Red Army had been hiding behind the title "amateurs" for over a decade, going around beating up Canadian junior hockey teams consisting of teenage kids. Nor is it a coincidence they pushed for the series to take place in Sept, when Orr was still hurt and Team Canada would be out of shape (NHL players didn't train in the summer back then). You should also read up on the type of hospitality Canada received while in Moscow.
Like I said, I grew up in the system and I know first hand how it worked (I was top level athlete in late 70's and had great insight into the system that was identical to Soviet). On the other hand, this Russian team was coached by Tarasov (best hockey mind of all times). It was entirely different story. Players played mostly for their pride because they loved hockey more than anything. They trained harder than others with their own initiative; they were never out of shape any day of a year.
You mean they trained because the Russian army told them they had to. They even regulated when they could see their wives. That's not exactly the type of hockey system I'd want to play under. You're entitled to your opinion, and Tarasov was a hockey genius, but I personally believe Scotty Bowman to be the wisest hockey mind that ever lived.
Not really. To make national team, they trained regular team doses and then individually - on their own initiative. It was very competitive. Look, I hated Russians back then but I know what went (too little room here. Not meaning to argue with you here - it's a good debate. I agree that Scotty Bowman was indeed genious as well. I would put him and Tarasov on pedestal of hockey. They were both phenomenal coaches AND people. I urge you to read Tarasov's and Firsov's books.
Actually the system of hockey used to counter the Soviets run-n-gun style you're referring too was created and first employed but the Swedes. So no you're not correct when you "blindly" suggest the only team who could play with the Russians at the time were the Czechs.
Sorry but you are wrong. It was Swedes who later revised Tarasov's system into several derivations they called their own. Read Tarasov's book. His system derived from old Russian team folk game - and at no time it was run & gun. It was a domain of NHL size rink for decades. Canada Cup was always played in September; I don't know what the big deal is here. I am not saying that Canada was not great; but even though Russians lost the series, they played much better hockey back then. That's all.
Canada Cup was started in the 80s, when NHL players trained during the summer. Canada's biggest mistake during the 72 series was that they took the Soviets for granted. Tarasov's system concentrated on speed, passing and finess (nothing wrong with that). The Swedish system I was referring to was the precursor to the Neutral Zone trap.
I apologize, did not read your comment with full atention. Yes, Swedes designed legitimate defensive system that gave them some leverage against Russians in late 70's and later. But around year 1972 (5+/-), the only team outside Canada who could consistently measure up against Russians and win some games, was Czechoslovakia team. What they did was to break the game into smallest segments possible so the "engine could not warm up". Swedes tried to actually play and they got slaughtered.
Part of the reason why Czech were one of the only countries who could compete with Russians on international ice surface was because they played under the same "amateur" title as the Soviets. International hockey forbade professionals from participating, which was why the Soviets dominated the international hockey arena for so long (ie the Olympics). The soviets would send their best "men" because they were classified as amateurs, while countries like CAN, SWE, FIN, USA would send junior kids.
jonesdanko3 Being a canadian gay as you are wont make change me LOL Your fucked brown nose is everywhere LOL But what I like about you little gay canadian boy : You love watching russian hockey !!! Your canadian gay nose always present in any vid about russian hockey players !!! Thank you jonesdanko3 You simply in love with russians Thanks again Please keep posting your BS here on youtube You jonesdanko3 represent Canada as we all understand ? Right? So keep posting Muah
i understand why you left russia. it's horrible how eastern block countries treated they're retards. now instead of being a human guinea pig for nuclear testing...you came to america and prospered selling pencils on the street corner. WAY TO GO CORKY!! just don't eat the lead...
I remember the fight(?) between Rod Gilbert and Mishakov in Game #8. It was the first sign that the Soviets would fight back. Just one more whack-o event in the oddest, most memorable game in hockey history.
@Antanas357 Да играть надо было так же в силовой манере. Вон Мищаков, Васильев могли вломить...а хули правда мищков сказал обосрались тренера.

No, that is true only for the WCs before 1977 and the Olympics, and only for NHL players.

I remember the fight(?) between Rod Gilbert and Mishakov in Game #8. It was the first sign that the Soviets would fight back. Just one more whack-o event in the oddest, most memorable game in hockey history.
