Bruno was just too big for his own good .. other fighters often got shocked by his power but sadly he was too slow to become a great fighter, I remember that big hit in the first Tyson fight .. and if only Frank had been a bit faster he would have beaten Tyson that night.
beating McCall was no easy task. Bruno schooled him well. Oliver Ko'd Lewis, and in the rematch Lewis was nailing him and Olly wasn't moving. Bruno has much respect from America. First guy to really hurt Tyson, if Frank was on the ball a little better, he would've got Mike out of at least down.
Former World Heavyweight Champion Frank Bruno was never an uncle tom. That was Just a slur on his charactor. Frank Bruno is still the peoples champion, only beaten by world champs like Tyson, James Smith, and Lennox Lewis. What the hell was wrong with that ? Bruno is a legend !!!!!!!
one of the UK's most popular sportsman of all time, everyone loved big frank we all stayed up to watch his fights, a true nice guy in the hurt buisness......he always gave it his best and never made excuses......the 2nd fight with tyson he got a huge cut from a elbow, after the fight when asked he said thats boxing no excuses and excepted tyson was better.....today you'd have a person cryin they was robbed
Inspiration to us all, he never gave up. I bumped into him, literally, during a marathon he was slightly out of breath yet he still talked to me and was polite. I have much admiration for the man.
Remember seeing frank doing the great north run when i was about 5, just this huge black titan running through, i ran out and got through his guards, the man stopped shook my head and said " OWIGHT LITTLE MAN" in his huge cockney voice! Love this man, he was all heart and never ducked anyone, a true gent and a legend
Love the way Nigel Benn and all the other British boxers are willing Frank on in the last round. You wouldnt see that in other countries, great to see
So much for Khan screaming British fans are racist, he's so far off the mark it's ridiculous, Khan's and his camp just don't have that charisma, Bruno was my hero as a kid and I remember in my family we all felt great when he did well and gutted when he lost. It brings a lump to my throat seeing him finally become world champ no matter how many times I watch this.
brunos a hubble man tyson would like to be half the man frank is belive ..he might not of been the best champion to come out of england but all the brits loved him
I love Frank Bruno. Back to politics, UKIP's idea to completely exempt those earning £12, 000 or less from paying tax is a good one, as is their idea to save £15 billion Pounds every single year by withdrawing from the EU.
Norway is the most eligible nation on the planet in which to live, and they trade with the Euro Zone countries even more than we do. Yet they are not in the EU.
The Liberals, the Tories and New Labour want to scare the British people into staying in the EU.
I think people should know that about 15 years ago Frank Bruno drove himself to my next door neighbors house in London and spent the day with him as his last dying wish was to meet his hero. No cameras or media publicity, just a quiet affair out of the goodness of his heart. I have so much respect for this man its untrue!
I love Bruno, may not have been the greatest boxer, but no one could question his heart - and Tyson said it was the hardest he'd ever been hit. And that was Tyson in his prime.
Bruno was a good guy and a great fighter but he didnt beat McCall. The title got handed to him at home because he was getting old. I was at the fight 5th row and saw every second of it.
@foreverwild1775 yeah that's how boxing works... the commentators saw a different fight as did everyone else in the crowd, including Nigel Benn, who started celebrating before the decision came. I've seen the fight aswell. Bruno was massively ahead on points. McCall took about 3 rounds.
No need for that kinda speak mate, I love Lennox dude, hes my fav, but pay a bit of respect to Frank too dude. 45 wins, 5 losses. Aint too bad, never lost to a bum.
@SAladinabu. Bruno only ever lost to world champions. Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith ,Witherspoon and King Lennox. No shame in that, Bruno is a good guy and we should see more of him in the media! They should at least give him a job on Sky boxing coverage!
Bruno was a great fighter and is a great guy someone you always wanted to win, I was so pleased when he won the world title. Just ashame he had to defend it against Tyson, when Bruno came out for the fight you could just see on his face he was gonna loose. Boxing needs another guy like Bruno.
No sensible person would argue Bruno was better then Lewis....The point is that Bruno would prefer to fight a Lewis type fighter then short squat fast Heavie like Tyson any day. People say that Bruno was 'crap' and he was outclassed when he fought someone decent. I assume Lewis was a decent fighter, he trailed him on the scorecards ! No one outclassed Bruno except Tyson..Lewis according to Gil Clancey got lucky with a hook he threw with his eyes down on the canvas. Outclassed?
bruno was ac good fighter first to rock tyson winning against lewis and witherspoon plus bonrcrusher before being stoppede bruce seldon refused to unify the wba title against him don king ripped him off by forcing him to fight tyson at his best
Bruno may never be recognised as a true great, But he was the peoples champion and i for one, was never as happy watching boxing than seeing him lift that title.
Well he is down in history of course and well deserved I might add with all that hard work but what I mean is that his place would have been much more secure in a different time, say like Rocky Marciano for example,he was in just the right era and yes he was a superb fighter as well anyway but there was better fighters in other times that he wouldn't have beaten, there was a lot of luck involved in his "undefeated" status.
i agree that he was a great fighter but lets face it Joe Louis was way past his sell by date when Rocky beat him, we'll never know for sure to be fair but somehow I couldn't see Rocky Marciano beating Joe in his heyday.
In another era I think Frank would have gone down in history, unfortunately for him his time was in the time when the standard of fighter elevated to hghts never seen before with Mike Tyson, Tyson at his best was unbeatable, Frank stood no chance and neither did anyone, it's only because Mike destroyed himself that Lennox got where he did, not taking anything away from Lennox, he was great as well but Tyson as his best would have had him for breakfast.
i have to respectfully disagree with your comment on Mike Tyson. at his best any man can be beat.but I do agree that if a prime Mike would have fought Lennox Tyson would have beaten him.also Frank did rock Tyson in their fight.the problem I had with Bruno was, I think he was to muscular too much muscle mass, and it would make him gas in the later rounds.but I respect Bruno, heart of a lion.
frank bruno promoted by frank warren mccall by don king back in 1995 they were partners in promotion but in the end normal service prevailed and lennox lewis became no1 champ
frank bruno was a loveable character but i never rated him as a fighter he was ok domestic he won world title shouldnt have been in the ring that night lewis fought eliminator against butler to fight mccall lewis won he should have faced mccall not bruno but frank warren at the time was sucking don kings dick in 1995
look its big frank the pride of britton and im all that.but a huge tyson fan 2 . bruno could have ducked him second time round as champ but didnt he took him on and lost . the man was all heart thats that.
Bruno had more of a bodybuilders body then a boxer. He never had much speed or stamina he was just looking for that onepunch that would prevent his opponent from getting up. He had awesome power but wasn't a good boxer on the whole
Like Bruno as a person, but he was never a great heavyweight. He lacked killer instinct big time and any one of Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, Bowe (In his day) would knock him out - as a couple of them did. Bruno was scared to death of Tyson and with good reason. He would lose 100 out of 100 fights by knockout to Tyson.
I have Frank Bruno's biography "Fighting Back". In it, he talks about growing up in South London, his early fights, meeting Tyson, his battle against bipolar depression and mental illness, and of course winning the WBC World Heavyweight Championship.
I recently saw an interview with Mike Tyson, he said Frank Bruno was the toughest fighter he ever fought, every punch was like full force all the time, because he wanted it!!!!
fuck that Tyson lifted everything, but the difference is skill and Bruno was just a friendly giant you know...Tyson was a hyper, super fast, superpowerful beast.....he was just like a hyper active maniac...
Whats a bummers dog mate? And He was undisputed champ because he won the WBC Heavywight Tltle which was the most sort after Belt in the division, and the way he fought that night he'd of destroyed any of the top heavyweights of the time....Granted, Tyson destroyed him next time out but Bruno, on the night he beat McCall was awsome and even tyson would have struggled to beat him
LOL.. Just a bummers dog init! dont get me wrong i liked bruno.. but he never had the heart to dig deep after starting fights so well e.g tyson, lewis .. i thought undisputed champ held like three of the top belts at the same time thus making them undisputed! like tyson and lewis did. yes bruno was a big strong man and hard to beat..
if bruno had the killer instinct, no fighter would be able to defete him. he had a strong body and a powerfull punch. he would have bbeen one of the greatest fighter ever, beating tyson and lweis. because he was not the type, he did not win these two fighters, so one wonders what would become of him if he hsd a rage. it wold have made be unstopabble.
frank bronu was the most popular british fighter ever, everyone loved him. he was a tremendously strong man with a good chin but as you rightly say any time he fought a decent opponent he was outclassed, but he never gave in and was a very polite, humble person gracious in victory and defeat, there cant be much wrong with that, he deserved to win a title because of the type of man he was. maybe he didn't beat tyson, or lewis but he won it fair and square, that cant be taken away from the man.
Bruno has 38 knockout wins from 40 victories; which is a 95% knockout record and gives Bruno one of the highest knockout percentages in heavyweight boxing history.
Frank was truly great over the first 4 or 5 rounds, would probably be up in a fight with anyone over that spell but I think his conditioning was probably too good in a way, his muscles sapped all his energy in the second half of fights so when he came up against people who were good enough to survive early exchanges with him he would often struggle, great heart though and I was very pleased when this happened.
Being an American Boxing fan, and seeing many of Bruno's fights I agree 100% with you, he has the heart of a lion. I never liked Lewis and I could understand fully why the British public never really embraced him, was he from Jamica, Canada, UK or what.... Anyway I give props where they are due, and Frank Bruno gets my props all the way. He reminded me of my ALL time favorite boxer Smokin' Joe Frazier, both never quit, both trained like animals and both of them had great hooks, anyone agree??
Yeah, I agree wiv u. Both were courageous fighters. Smokin Joe was a legend in his own right. Frank was limited in skill but more than made up for it with unbelievable heart and relentless desire to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
This guy Bruno was a very good fighter. In the fight against Lewis he was winning the fight (not something many fighters can claim) he made a bad mistake though as Eddie Futch says he stepped back on himself when he should have finished the final attack with a killer coup de grace right cross.
Not the best technically as he would be the first to admit. But he did what he set out to do. Nobody can ask more of him than that.
For sheer guts, bottle & determination you can't say a word against Frank Bruno. He fought Tyson & Lewis, both in their prime. Those names will always carry respect on any fighter's CV.
Boxing was great back then because most of it was shown on terrestrial TV. I think we actualy have better boxers now than back then, with Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye, Froch etc, but they don't get the coverage.
frank injured his eye in the mcall fight and really shudnt have passed the medical 4 tyson. 2 fight mcal frank had 2 make his first defense against mike tyson. don king made that clause in the contract.
I don`t know why Frank Bruno had his first defense against Mike Tyson. He could`ve picked an easier opponent to defend his title, then Tyson. All that time to win a world title then lose it straight away.
It was in his contract (that Don King arranged) that if he won the title in his fight with oliver McCall, he would have to make his first defence to Mike Tyson.
Bruno had the most incredible physique but he just did not know how to scrap...box, yes - but when it came to brawling and finishing someone off he did'nt have a clue.
Frank Bruno fought all the top guys,he lost to most of them but to us Brits, he was great in his endeavor to win the heavyweight title. Its almost like the rocky story to be honest even though the yanks poked fun at him,he was our gem.Thanx Frank.
Mostly people say prime Tyson would KO prime Lewis... But i see the opposite... Lewis would KO Tyson... As Lewis knock Tyson out already even in 1984 in a training match...
He probably could of yeah. But he did anyway as the fight did happen but if Lennox Lewis was there instead of Trevor Berbick,or if he didn`t beat him then he`d make sure of sparking him next time. But Lewis obviously was a great champion.
Sure he is 1 of the best heavyweight undisputed champs ever with Muhammad Ali,Joe Louis,Larry Holmes and Rocky Marciano... It always boring that the Heavyweight Champs was still end of 80`s only Americans as there was a few from other countries as now last 4-5 years the SOviets dominate the Heavyweight. Peter is few from the exotic champs... :) I wanna see more good boxers or champs from different countries. It could be Senegal,Papua ,Ecuador,Malaysia or whatever lol. Not always America&Europe!
Bruno was our top fighter.Alright he wasn`t Tyson, Lewis(although he`s British)Larry Holmes or any of them but we liked him.He deserved it more than them especially when it came out that he had by polar disorder.
But in reality he is a true Jamaican rastaman!!! Even when he speaks English his accent is not at like UK people... Like David Haye`s accent is %100 UK... That soft english u guys know what am talking about...
Don`t be saying that,Bruno is cockney,ok,English accents are actually changing slightly, but Frank Bruno IS British like David Haye,British but both of overseas descent but so is all of us,I`m Irish descent.
Bruno was just too big for his own good .. other fighters often got shocked by his power but sadly he was too slow to become a great fighter, I remember that big hit in the first Tyson fight .. and if only Frank had been a bit faster he would have beaten Tyson that night.

Nice guy, its a shame that his retirement has been dogged by some sadness such as Divorce, and Mental Health problems.
But you've got to admire him hewas very candid about it. And in his career he fought all the big names Lennox Lewis, Tyson, Witherspoon.
Even Tyson later said that Bruno was the 1st fighter to truly hurt him.
He was also in that wicked film Cass.

What a great moment for British boxing. Makes me proud to be british. Bruno is a credit to the nation.

gotta love frank, so happy he finally became champion....
down4whatever2009 2 years ago 2
if bruno had the killer instinct, no fighter would be able to defete him. he had a strong body and a powerfull punch. he would have bbeen one of the greatest fighter ever, beating tyson and lweis. because he was not the type, he did not win these two fighters, so one wonders what would become of him if he hsd a rage. it wold have made be unstopabble.

he'd need to be a good boxer too, he had no guard.

frank bronu was the most popular british fighter ever, everyone loved him. he was a tremendously strong man with a good chin but as you rightly say any time he fought a decent opponent he was outclassed, but he never gave in and was a very polite, humble person gracious in victory and defeat, there cant be much wrong with that, he deserved to win a title because of the type of man he was. maybe he didn't beat tyson, or lewis but he won it fair and square, that cant be taken away from the man.

Bruno has 38 knockout wins from 40 victories; which is a 95% knockout record and gives Bruno one of the highest knockout percentages in heavyweight boxing history.

all brunos fights were hand picked. when he did fight a fighter with cred he got kod.

Frank was truly great over the first 4 or 5 rounds, would probably be up in a fight with anyone over that spell but I think his conditioning was probably too good in a way, his muscles sapped all his energy in the second half of fights so when he came up against people who were good enough to survive early exchanges with him he would often struggle, great heart though and I was very pleased when this happened.
zebra55 2 years ago
Bruno would be an undisputed Heavyweight Champ if he were boxing now. . No trouble . Go Frank

TheLeadSled 2 years ago
Yeah, I agree wiv u. Both were courageous fighters. Smokin Joe was a legend in his own right. Frank was limited in skill but more than made up for it with unbelievable heart and relentless desire to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
dermotp44 2 years ago
Frank Bruno is more trained then Joe Fraizer. Look at this body. His 1 of the most muscular HW champs ever.

When you finally realized your dream at Wembley stadium that night, I cried like a big girl cus i was so chuffed for you Frank.
It was an amazing night. The emotions were incredible. The british public love you mate.
dermotp44 2 years ago
This guy Bruno was a very good fighter. In the fight against Lewis he was winning the fight (not something many fighters can claim) he made a bad mistake though as Eddie Futch says he stepped back on himself when he should have finished the final attack with a killer coup de grace right cross.

Robotic fighter. Lewis made him look stupid. Wife slepped with everyone in Sounth London and as now gone into madstream....
Hmmmnnn.......
spb1968 3 years ago
Its comments like yours that make our sportsmen/women have doubts.
What a pathetic badly written statement that was.
Where is "sounth" London by the way?
Bruno was not the best fighter, his technique was not the best, however, what he did have was determination and belief in himself.
He over came all the pathetic made up crap, like yours, and went on to win.
AnglOsAxOn2 3 years ago 3
Spot on.
And a lovely bloke too.
You did it Frank. You wore the belt.
Get in there my son!

i remember this night like it was yesterday. Those last 25 seconds we were screaming at the TV for him to just hold on!
That was the era of boxing at its greatness. Boxing now is a joke.
Kasp3rx 3 years ago
Boxing was great back then because most of it was shown on terrestrial TV. I think we actualy have better boxers now than back then, with Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye, Froch etc, but they don't get the coverage.

Without doubt, the greatest night ever in British Boxing history.
Brings a tear to me eye just watching it.
DaRealBAve 3 years ago
frank injured his eye in the mcall fight and really shudnt have passed the medical 4 tyson. 2 fight mcal frank had 2 make his first defense against mike tyson. don king made that clause in the contract.
mouseinpeanutbutter 3 years ago
Strangely enough Bruno has a 95% knockout record. The best ever for a heavyweight. Bizarre but true.
stillceaser 3 years ago
I do wish that was true, according to BoxRec it is 88.44%.
I get a tear everytime i think of him waiting to announce the decision... NEW!!!!!

Vitali Klitschko has a better KO record. Only having gone the distance once, and that was because he was fighting a 'friend'.

I don`t know why Frank Bruno had his first defense against Mike Tyson. He could`ve picked an easier opponent to defend his title, then Tyson. All that time to win a world title then lose it straight away.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago
It was in his contract (that Don King arranged) that if he won the title in his fight with oliver McCall, he would have to make his first defence to Mike Tyson.

Frank Bruno fought all the top guys,he lost to most of them but to us Brits, he was great in his endeavor to win the heavyweight title. Its almost like the rocky story to be honest even though the yanks poked fun at him,he was our gem.Thanx Frank.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago
Frank Bruno knocked almost Tyson out in the first match in round 1. Cant see any clear video here in youtube of Tyson-Bruno 1!!!
bambataa4ever 3 years ago
Yeah Tyson was downhill from then on.Frank could`ve beat imo but he was as he usually did, he just froze. But Mike Tyson was awesome even then.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago
Mostly people say prime Tyson would KO prime Lewis... But i see the opposite... Lewis would KO Tyson... As Lewis knock Tyson out already even in 1984 in a training match...
bambataa4ever 3 years ago
He probably could of yeah. But he did anyway as the fight did happen but if Lennox Lewis was there instead of Trevor Berbick,or if he didn`t beat him then he`d make sure of sparking him next time. But Lewis obviously was a great champion.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago
Sure he is 1 of the best heavyweight undisputed champs ever with Muhammad Ali,Joe Louis,Larry Holmes and Rocky Marciano... It always boring that the Heavyweight Champs was still end of 80`s only Americans as there was a few from other countries as now last 4-5 years the SOviets dominate the Heavyweight. Peter is few from the exotic champs... :) I wanna see more good boxers or champs from different countries. It could be Senegal,Papua ,Ecuador,Malaysia or whatever lol. Not always America&Europe!
bambataa4ever 3 years ago
Asia and Mexico dominate boxing. Obviously in the lighter weight classes, not in heavyweight.
Greker 3 years ago
Bruno was our top fighter.Alright he wasn`t Tyson, Lewis(although he`s British)Larry Holmes or any of them but we liked him.He deserved it more than them especially when it came out that he had by polar disorder.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago 2
If Lewis didnt have that height and reach advantage, he could have never beaten Bruno.

Lewis was English.
peaceman1234567 3 years ago
But in reality he is a true Jamaican rastaman!!! Even when he speaks English his accent is not at like UK people... Like David Haye`s accent is %100 UK... That soft english u guys know what am talking about...
bambataa4ever 3 years ago
Don`t be saying that,Bruno is cockney,ok,English accents are actually changing slightly, but Frank Bruno IS British like David Haye,British but both of overseas descent but so is all of us,I`m Irish descent.
