@MrGocops They *did* use tie-downs. Most of them failed. The soil at LAL is mostly sand and the tiedowns pulled out. All aircraft at Sun-n-fun must be tied down.
Saturday onsite the chat was... what was heavy and/or tied down survived. What was light and/or not tied down did not. It was not a storm searching out LSA.
airste172.... What point are you trying to make? I saw a Caravan with a Belly Pod on its back too..... Sounds like you just have a problem with those pesky LSA's... right?
An interesting factor that is not mentioned about this by the aviation media is the fact that the vast majority of aircraft that were damaged or destroyed were of the Light Sport variety. While other heavier aircraft received some damage as well, it seems to be mostly as a result of the Light Sport planes becoming projectiles hurled by the wind and inflicting the greatest amount of injury to other aircraft that might have otherwise escaped unharmed.
How about walking a few steps closer - like to the Eclipse 500? Wasn't it possible to get a better look instead of doing speculations? Poor coverage...
cprich22: I bet most, if not all, were tied down. I can see tie-down ropes still attached to several of the aircraft which flipped in the video. If a house can have it's roof ripped off in a strong wind, an aircraft in a field doesn't have a chance - no matter how well it's tied down.
DIslike because of the damage. Good news, nobody was hurt, other good news for maintenance facilities on the airport, just wished it wasn't like this, and bad news is everyone is going to have headaches from the insurance companies, and broken hearts. :-(
fantasy of flight saved my life. we were there when my tent got crushed

I am not from the US but I would have thought that if a storm is coming I would get my aircraft out of there!
Its not a house, it can be moved. Why did people just try to brave it?

The storm ran by my house 25 minutes to the west. Very high winds, like a hurricane. Hope everything will be ready for Saturday when I will be there.

what a shame that such a nice event has been overshadowed by this tragedy, here in Mexico we are also saddened by what happened.
