  • Has no one mentioned the cover from around 2003 by the mighty Fall?

  • Rock 'n' Roll!

  • OZ AND JAMES

  • Thissong reminds me of getting stoned and listening to a whole load of music with my old friends way back in the 80's.

The music has stayed with me..

  • God i've been looking for this for ages..been asking every one if they new it as i couldn't remember who did it or what it was called and when it was done i new it was a mouth organ..but it kept going through my head..now i have it thanks...Elaine :)

  • This is also one of my favourite tunes, but there's a difference between the vinyl version and the CD version. This is, I am presuming, taken from a CD and the intro has been cut short. There should be 8 claps before the piano comes in, but the first five appear to be missing and the piano comes in after three. I have both the vinyl and CD versions and my CD copy is the same as this one. Still a superb tune though.

  • This and Wade in the Water by Ramsey Lewis are at the top of my all time fav list from way back in the day, brill music KTF

  • Brilliant player, he also played on Frank Ifield - Wayward wind.

  • Me and my sis used to groove to this every saturday night at the Top Rank, way back....FABULOUS!!!!

  • Does it matter who it is just enjoy the music Fantastic tune

  • Don't care who performed this, but could listen to it all day.

  • Always remins me of going down the Fulham Broadway to watch Chelsea on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Come on you blues!

  • Awesome!

  • played at the Bolton Palais every Sunday, Monday and Thursday soul nights. KTF.

  • @JohnBWFC1955 Ahh remember it well Sunday nights, what a night.

  • Dave , Roger, Caleb and I go back 40 years...I'll check with them ! I put them on in Guildford (as Mr Bloe) back in the 70's. A crowd of skin heads turned up for "Mr Bloe"...didn't like the long haired band....btw.. I wrote "She's a Winner" with Dave Wright with " The Loot" which was an early version of Hookfoot.

  • Just to let you know who this was...they were actually called "Hookfoot" a rock band who recorded for Dick James (DJM ). The line up was Caleb Quaye (guitar), Dave Glover (bass) Roger Pope (drums) and Ian Duck (harmonica and guitar). They all played with Elton John's band at one stage (check out "Tumbleweed Connection"). Caleb and Roger went on to play for Hall and Oates. They were session guys.

  • @EarlEdgbaston there is a comment on here from a year ago which said that Hookfoot did not perform on the record but other session musicians and that DJM forced Hookfoot who were signed to DJM to `perform` the song on Top of The Pops as Mr Bloe and make live appearances as Mr Bloe...

  • @45rpmSINGLES What a convoluted mess...EarlEdgbaston is somewhat correct if you believe Stephen James. According to him; Steve Brown produced the session first with Elton, Caleb, Roger, etc..

Seems neither Brown or James were happy with the outcome. So Stephen James produces the second session with Zack Laurence as arranger, and some hired 'outside' musicians.

James recalls Dee Murray playing bass on the first session, and not Roger Glover.

Sorry for adding to the confusion.

  • @EarlEdgbaston

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, radio station, WFIL AM used this GREAT song as background promo music for the "Boss Jocks" contest. They would drive around in a Ford Mach 1 302 car and give out money if you had a WFIL bumper sticker on your car. At the end of the contest they gave the car away also. I have always loved this song and so does everyone else that hears it.

  • Heard this blast from the past whilst enjoying a drink in a bar in Hisoranu, Turkey. Got the details from the barman. Now added to my favourites as a reminder of my youth. Thanks for the memories

  • Has anyone ever drawn comparison between; Bowie's 'New Career In A New Town'; 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'Groovin' With Mr Bloe'? Whatever. I want this at my funeral too! :)

  • Summer 1970, Mister Smith's club, Brazil Street, Manchester. That's all that needs to be said about this classic. Haunting harmonica. It was played every hour along with Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys by The Equals and Sex Machine, James Brown. Hey, I'm there now!

  • where do I get a juke box for my record s

  • we played this at my dads funeral was a old fav of his still makes me cry 2day xx

  • @ladyinredisfun Oh how sad for this song to be played at your dad's funeral... still it is quite melancholy.

  • we played this at my dads funeral was a old fav of his still makes me cry 2day xx

  • Oz & James ......

  • Brilliant! I have loved this record ever since I first heard it when I was 15 in 1970.

It reminds me so much of that summer...wish I could go back!!!

  • Damn speakers wont carry the bass line. Top posting!

  • Remember seeing them do this on TOTPs! Caleb Quaye was wearing cut offs and a pair of what looked like Tuff boots sprayed gold or silver!!!Ha Ha!

  • Used to play this in a "discoteque" back in 1970, used to start my set with it for a while. Ktf

  • Another one of those great 'speed skating' tunes...

  • THIS TAKES ME BACK TO THE SUMMER OF 1970 (THE YEAR I LEFT SCHOOL) WAS ONE OF THE GREAT SONGS THAT WERE IN THE TOP 30 AROUND THAT TIME. NOW THAT I WAS WORKING WAS ABLE TO BUY A NEW SINGLE EACH WEEK (WHEREAS BEFGORE IT TOOK ME AGES TO SAVE UP FOR ONE)

  • @gilllew I left school then too! Done with ties and assembly etc! Up to West End for a job in Regents Street!

Glamour puss!! What a great time that was.

  • Always loved this but could never recall the title. Saachi and Saachi used it on a TV ad in the 90's but I only recently remembered the cool "Groovin With Mr Bloe". Thanks for posting, I'm rewarded.

  • EPIC 70S RULE.

  • I was dying to know this song's name! First time I heard it, was on a motivational video, last year at school, it's great! :D

  • Wonderful piece of bubblegum soul! I don't know why they were a 1-hit-wonder. :-(

  • always loved this tune

  • wow ace track too

  • Thank you !! Ilove that song and searched it for a lot of years !!!!

  • 17 years old !!! I remember a summer with plenty of fun in south of France. quel souvenir super !! si je ne trompe pas il y avait aussi "in the summertime" . by Mungo Jerry

  • I was a skinhead when this entered the charts

  • @kopynd me too a fantastic yr i will never forget xx

  • Dam!! Heres my story regarding this piece of music. For the last 15 years i have been trying to find out what its called. I very very rarely hear it on the radio and when i do i never hear who played it. :-(

But today i heard it again after about 3 years and THIS TIME i heard who played it :-) Which brings me to here LOL!!!

Now i can die happy LOL!! :-) Its up there with "Have you ever seen the rain" by CCR.

  • @minatormyth - just use Shazam. Dial 2580 from your mobile. It can identify most tracks.

  • So damn catchy!

  • What a teaser this tune was and still feel the groove ...

... groving alright with me ... wow what a time ... nice reminder.

Tks. alot ... greta upload of yours .... from Budapest =5stars

  • It's Mungo Jerry.. and Sir Elton John on piano..

  • sorry to disappoint but ... no it isn't. Not even close .. Harry Pitch played the Harmonica on this .. and strangely enough on the theme tune to the BBC TV series "Last Of The Summer Wine"

Paul King was the Harmonica player in Mungo Jerry

  • @ Solviden

Mr. Bloe was an alias used by the DJM record label producer/arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Zack Lawrence.

"Groovin' With Mr Bloe", written by Bo Gentry, P. Naumann and K. Laguna, featuring Harry Pitch on harmonica, and Zack Lawrence on piano.

  • Wow guys, i just thougth of an old track and found this. From here it's went on and on to find other tracks i'd forgotten about. Thankyou to the uploader, long may your flares be swinging.

  • Hary Pitch on harmonica. Legendary tune.

  • Good post... excellent sound of the n70's

  • Thanks from me too, even if you spelled Mungo Jerry wrong.. ;-)

  • Here¡s another blindin' gem of the golden music: The sixties.

    Thanks, Mr. 45rpm!!

  • SINFUL not to have the 'B' side posted up as well!! ☺

  • Comment removed

  • i read that this song was the b side to a 45 by a group called wind with tony orlando.

  • i remember this in the early 70's and if i am not mistaken elton john was the pianist behind the harmonica can any one verify cheers

  • Right! It was a young Reggie Dwight who did the piano work!

It was on the DJM label, (Dick James Music) which had Elton contracted to them in 1970.

  • Sorry to disappoint, but you are close with your info.but Zack Lawrence was the keys man -who's project it had been ---The link 2 Elton is that the BAND had been EJ's backing band (Hookfoot) and ALL the personnel as you rightly put it were with the Dick James Music label !!

  • Ok, Mr. B .. thanks for the detailed info.. good to have the pieces filled in.

If I remember rightly.. (correct me if I'm wrong!) Zack Lawrence was responsible for most of the compositions on the album they put out in 1970?

  • Dear Gruntelfluk The album 2 which U refer 2 EJ ..may ?? have appeared on odd trax however not on this ... Don't really know the answer 2 your question except 2 say that this piece was not written by Zack..However I do know that Elton J did appear and sing on some of those inexpensive HOT HITS albums as session artist...most notably on Signed,Sealed,Delivered . which he once recalled in an interview that I heard !!

    Best Wishes

    MrBazzabee

  • @MrBazzabee HOOKFOOT did NOT play on this number. They were however forced by DJM to masquerade as Mr. Bloe on Top of The Pops as the number was done by various session musicians who were not a group. HOOKFOOT also went on the road as Mr. Bloe. They were told they could "do their own stuff" so long as they played Grooving with Mr. Bloe somewhere during the set. HOOKFOOT was Prog Rock.

  • Dear theBellydancer1949...Thanx 4 the info-I'm sure ur right ,however .....I was fairly close !!!!

    Kind Regards MrBazzabee

  • @slippysam1959 harry pitch on harmonica, zack lawrence on piano :-)
