Although it seems to have affected the Japanese as well, since we now have Touhou 13: Ten Desires and DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu, which are both total jokes in comparison to previous games in their respective series.

Yes, Mushi has a higher bullet density, but touhou mixes more non aimed and aimed shots and uses more odd patterns etc. its less guiding the enemy and more careful reactions and dodging. as for DoDonPachi and DaiOuJou, I agree. Those are very difficult danmaku. They still suffer in that most of the shots are aimed thereby making it easier to predict and dodge. Why do they have to be so damned fast though...

I must say though, the Mushimesama final boss is stupid difficult even for a danmaku. This is mostly because of the fact that it fucking locks down your movement! GAH! hate hate...

To me, at least, Futari is a bit "easier" than touhou, God Mode aside. Maybe I'm just better at raw dodging I dunno.

Regardless of our answers or preferences, however, at least we can agree that Futari and Touhou both are far more difficult than "The World's Hardest Game."

@AgentSapphire Well, in games like DaiOuJou or Futari, the streaming and dodging of aimed shots is far from trivial. Because of the way the bullets are fired (bursts in highly granular directionality), players must actually read the bullets with extensive motion vector extrapolation, read prioritization and line-of-sight reading when performing reversals. This has to be done non-stop because of the fast bullet speed.

(sorry for the stuffy terms, I can't think of any other way to describe it)

@KlLLAH573 its true that the streaming and aimed shots are not "trivial" but it also means that you can utilize it to your advantage. An aimed shot is always easier than a random scatter or a forced pattern. Streaming and aimed shots are always dodged with a somewhat basic technique. Non aimed shots either force the player to rely on pure skill (random) or on a dodging pattern they dont normally use (set pattern). what makes Futari "harder" for most people is merely the bullet spray and density.

@AgentSapphire Except that the difference in streaming between CAVE and Touhou is that the bullets are almost never aimed exactly at the player hitbox, not to mention that most CAVE enemies have multiple firing points. So in the end, the player must use more skill overall by first manipulating the stream and then reversing through it using actual dodging skill, like with the "random" patterns that you mentioned.

This is unlike Touhou streaming, where a simple misdirection will make a viable gap.

@AgentSapphire Now while both CAVE and Touhou streaming often involve dodging through other barrages at the same time, it's not the "bullet density" that makes Futari more difficult. In fact, Touhou has some denser patterns.

I do agree, though, that Touhou 11 Lunatic is somewhat comparable to more difficult shmups. It's really because of the arcade-like design, and for this reason it's my favorite Touhou game.
