being from the UK, i don't know anything about Hot 97. I'm guessing it's a hip/hop radio station, we've got some like that in the UK, but probably not as extreme xD Could someone link to me an actual Hot 97 audio clip of what they are joking about here?

@robskarin Hot 97 is the big hip-hop station in New York City that pushed a lot of the big East Coast rappers that got really big (Biggie Smalls, e.g.) and were pretty well-known for basically having shoot-outs outside their studio every other fucking week. If you've seen thelastneo's "Giant Bomb Hot 97 Radio Ad," that's basically what Hot 97 (or any of the competing stations like Power 105.1, for that matter) sounds like anytime they don't have a guest on.
