I don't get this. Here everybody has been telling Ratty about following their instincts to prepare for winter, and when Ratty decides to follow HIS and head south for new adventures, they freak out and stop him! MAKE UP YOUR MINDS, YOU VERMIN!
@Gunganfan Aww, but that's intentional on the part of the author! On one hand, we must have roots and something to return to, but on the other, duty and adventure call us to the wider world! According to the book, we can't throw away friends and home on a whim, like the Seafarer, but we can't turn in on ourselves, either. It's a great dichotomy.
@perfume1965 it seems tp be so....he once said in another episode the one when Toad got crazy about bulding and architecture that his anscestors were seafarers or something like that merchants and that they all heard 'the call of the sea' at some points of their lives...so maybe that was that he didn't listen to his 'longing'...but it's only my guess...
@ultimateMacgregor Yes, he's a very self-centred and somewhat over-blown character but there's genuine affection for his friends which always shows itself. He's definately not an unpleasant character at all.
Always has been my very favorite episode, ever since I was a child. My mom taped these episodes and pulls them out to do bills. When I hear this episode playing, I immediately stop what I'm doing and watch it.
The stop motion is so seamless... the character models, environments, voice acting, atmosphere... everything is there. They put SO much work into this series, it kinda makes me wanna cry.
this is my least favorite episode ever!! i dont like how ratty gets up set and the sea farer scares the living day lights out of me! always has always will!! :(
There are a few WITW soundtrack CDs on Amazon, I just got one yesterday and the song is on it, but the second half of it has been changed with the instruments (much more of them, not as haunting and hypnotising, but more "energetic") which is a pity actually, but at least I have got it.
This episode is rare in that Toad tries to restrain Rat from making a bad mistake, while the reverse (Rat trying to restrain Toad) is more common in the series! :D
It is always the Water Rat who is open to mystical experiences. Kenneth Graham describes the Mole as being unable to comprehend what is drawing his friend to the sea. In the Piper chapter, only the Rat can hear the song in the reeds.
some of these stories are interesting allegories. here, i think we're looking at rat's temptation to sin (dark wanderer). how sad that his friends stopped him - the story would have been better served by allowing him to go and return with stories of his adventures, happy to be back with his old friends, than this sad tale of lost opportunity. better remorse than regret!
An interesting point, but Ratty wasn´t in his right mind, he was somehow spellbound. What if the seafarer had taken him into danger or what if the spell had stopped somewhere on the sea?
I would have been curious as well what could have happened if Ratty had gone with him, but my gut feeling was against it ;-). Anyway, a strange, but beautiful episode, and at the end Ratty regains his usual state of mind.
i used to have all these episode on video then i miss placed it and havent seen them since but now im a happy chappy and can watch them again. thankyou
Toad: "Old Ratty?" "Where's he gone?"
Mole: "Otter said Constantinople." "Do you know where that is?"
Toad: "Yes, of course!" "It's just on the other side of Berkhemstead!" LOL!

I'm pleased with the way Toad was immediately ready to help Mole. That's one his best qualities, he cares a lot for his friends.

I wonder why that horse, that Mole and Toad talk to about Rat, is so damn rude to them?
Galisoneh 3 years ago 4
Reminds me of Albert, the cantankerous horse in Alan Bennett's dramatisation:
-"He wants me to pull a caravan, and I'm not supposed to pull things! Doctor's orders"
-"Smack anybody else on the bottom and it's a punishment, whereas if you're a horse you're supposed to love it"
-"When I say supper, I don't mean one of them nosebag things where you get your kippers all mixed up with the custard"
