  • Leonard Cohen's song

  • I think this is my favorite version of this song.

  • This song is too much

  • how pointless, jeff has done it better.

  • @djdaraghBCN then don't watch it. by the way, it's Leonard Cohen's original. Not Jeff Buckley.

  • @paige3406 How can I unwatch something I have already watched? :) I like Damien Rice. I was just saying that he brings nothing new to the song so it'a a waste of time. I know Leonard Cohen wrote it, that has nothing to do with my comment - Jeff Buckley's version is my favorite. Followed by John Cale's. Len is no 3. Rice's does not rate.

  • @djdaraghBCN simple, don't watch a different version than Jeff Buckley's if you're going to insult it. What's the point in saying he has no talent with it? don't comment, its ludicrous

  • Why are there only bad copies of his version online, the album version is just perfect?

  • my brah!

  • I recently joined a singing competition...I sang the same song Hallelujah...never thought that after 36 days I will meet the man himself...Damien Rice...in his own home...it was so humbling that he let me and a friend of mine in his own home...he was so nice and pleasant. I am very honored to have met the man!

  • @Estela61211 everyone says he's a wanker, don't fell humbled!! :)

  • Justin Timberlake's cover is also great

  • Sincerely, this is not my favourite corver of this song, but I love everything Damien does. His voice is always emotional, and I like the guitar instead of the piano...

  • This kid sings his ass off, period! With feeling - feeling - feeling.

  • Brilliant

  • so powerful, Damien is the man!

  • Dont like that Version.

  • Damien is amazing.

  • Why'd you sing Hallelujah if it means nothing to you?

  • @paige3406 how would you know that it doesnt mean anything to him?

This song is a pure prayer and thats NEVER wrong so let him sing it and just ignore it if you dont like it :)

  • @lolman89 it's a line from one of his songs

"why'd you sing Hallelujah if it means nothing to ya?" - Delicate - Damien Rice

  • @mythoughtshalfleaked oh i didnt know...then im sorry :)

  • @lolman89 The lyrics in his song, 'Delicate' are "Why'd you sing Hallelujah if it means nothing to you"

  • I believe that Jeff Buckley's version is the ultimate, becaue, like many have said here, he made it his own. Most covers now, including this one are based on Buckley's vocal and guitar arrangements. VERY different from Cohen's original. And, though Cohen's voice fits many of his songs (the way Dylan's does), this song calls for a more tender voice than Cohen.

All that being said, Buckley originally heard Jogn Cale's cover from the ealy 90's and based his version on that, rather than Cohen's.

  • It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah... uhh

  • better than All.

  • hey i've uploaded a video of myself singing this song, please listen to it and let me know what you think :)

  • i like!!

  • 3:38 -- JESUS FUCKING CHRIST

  • most wonderful, emotional singer with the most wonderful, emotional song ever heard... perfect ^^

  • everyone has their own way of singing songs and there are some ppl who like to pick a song out tht they like tht one person sings better than the other, just let ppl be the way they want to be

  • If there is someone allowed to sing this song for god sake that one is Damien, a true artist for a true timeless song.

  • It is a great song .... I feel though that Jeff Buckley made it his own, maybe its because of his untimely death that pushes him ahead of the rest or maybe it is because he was a genius who unfortunately was about 10 years ahead of his time

  • adorei, gosteii muito.. eu queria tanto dizer essas palavras do fundo do meu coração, mas não consigo. =(

  • this is music.

  • My favorite song....one of my favorite artists...I just did a cover of this song. I put all my heart into it...so it would be awesome if you guys checked it out. please?? :)

  • Okay, Damien Rice is one of my ultimate favourite singers in the world. No doubt about it. I love his style, his songs, everything. He's a fantastic artist. But his cover is not a favourite of mine of this song.

Despite the fact that Leonard Cohen wrote this, I honestly think that this song belongs to Jeff Buckley. Have you ever heard a more perfect cover than Buckley? My personal preference, but I think that Jeff Buckley completely owns this song.

  • @EskimoBreckyn I completely agree with you on the Jeff Buckley thing. The closest i think anybody has came before or since (since everybody seems to have covered this song) is a chap called Myles Kennedy who pays a wonderful tribute.

  • @mrbennnn I listened to Myles Kennedy's version, and I would have to agree, that he has a pretty good cover. Some people take this song so strongly from the beginning, and this is a delicate song that needs to be soft at first and built up in the rising verses. And the way they play the guitar is so gentle, whereas, if you listen to Damien Rice again, he's very harsh with the guitar. I guess some people it's based on preference. But Myles Kennedy was pretty good, thanks for sharing.

  • love this version

  • This is a beautiful song

  • Barely even singing :S he just speaks the entire song

  • @hoobastankrulez Have you seen Leonard Cohen's version ?

  • @Frenchdayz yeah...i dont like it :/

i know it sounds stupid but i like the covers of this song a lot more than the original

  • worst version i ever heard :(

  • Beautiful n sweet...

  • hallelujah he can sing his heart out!!!! :D

  • this is beautiful

  • So much better than Rufus or even Leonard himself. Just amazing.

  • few musicians can play this song. he can.

  • back in the days when internet was far away, we were sitting around a campfire when someone took the guitar and started playing this song. unforgettable.

  • 'twas good. but nothing beats buckley's version.

  • who does not like Damien, well.... concentrate on syncrodiving because obviously you have no clue of what is music.

  • Stunning version, one of the best out there...very powerful...sigh.

  • Why do people argue which version is better than others?? I don't understand it. Different singers have their own singing styles. I believe that everyone has their own wonderful way of singing. If you don't like any version, it's not very nice to give strong comments. You'd better stick to the version you like, that's all....

  • @nuroong18 I completely agree with your annoyance. Although I firmly believe the song has been over done, I have yet to hear one that is "bad". Each artists interpretation is their own addition to what has been built on the foundation of an amazing song written by an amazing songwriter.

  • @nuroong18 I think it's because, in this case, the version is clearly a direct rip off of the Jeff Buckley interpretation and hence is clearly NOT someone expressing their "own singing style". In a case such as this, it is also easy to assess the comparable versions and state that this is like listening to Buckley if he were drained of all emotion and couldn't actually sing particularly well.

  • @nuroong18 I dont think everyone has their wonderful way of singing, I doubt you would want to hear me sing this song. but I still get your point :D

  • @nuroong18 I definitely agree with you.

  • this is such a great tribute to this song, and what better musician to do it than Damien Rice :)

  • Anyone who complains about the cover, why don't you just fuck off and listen to the original???

  • Rufus Wainwright is cool that is my opinion nd i really think that his cover is the BEST I#ve ever heard

  • Every version send chills down my spine, Jeff Buckley's is my favourite and this version is a wonderfully sung addition this songs incredible history.

  • I can't make up my mind on which version of this song i like the most

  • wàhnsinn_sÙcht_mâl_ÑÃch:_geldeasy_âùf_gÕÓglÉ

  • Bloody worst version ever.

  • so leonard cohen sits down to pee/ who gives a fuck if anybody is from canada..oh wait nickelback is..fuck canada

  • I could listen to a thousand versions of this song. The lyric is so powerful, you sometimes forget the voice. It consumes me.

  • I've heard better but he is still great :)

  • totally amazing!

btw. I prefer him in longer hair :))

  • His voice is like magic.

  • @bmuscat well done... well done

  • he puts so much passion into his music, get's me everytime!

comment on my cover of this if you get time :) i also did a cover of Blower's Daughter.

  • @newKelchJr too fast

  • I love Damien Rice. He has one of my more pure, soulful voices of our generation. Excellent cover.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • No matter how many talented singers cover it, it is and will always be Leonard Cohen's song

  • There are very few covers of this song that I don't like(I won't name those). The first time I heard this song was Rufus Wainwrights version loved it. Love Jeff Buckleys and I love this version. I also love K.D. Langs. I enjoyed the impromtu version with Natalie Merchant, Damien Rice and Glenn H. That one because they all looked like they were having fun.

  • Excellent version of this magical, spiritual song. One of the best I've heard.....and I've listened to dozens. Great job!

  • i love the little pauses he takes. and every moment is full.

  • not the best quality recording but still a beautiful rendition of a seminal song penned by the great Leonard...now where is the Shrek version? It's still the best one...

  • i've seen a lot of comment arguing about "whose version" is better.

i just want to say : listen to the song. you like it ? you love it ? great.

you don't like this cover? go listen another and stop criticizing artists.

  • 114 People mistook the "dislike" button with "dis-i-like"...

  • @Slider68tg LOL ;)

  • @Slider68tg Hey Hey! Fuck youuu!

  • @Slider68tg that would make any sense if this was a bob marley song

  • @Slider68tg no he just sucked at singing the song

  • @bobz23579 ...no

  • Wonderful..., wonderful..., wonderful rendition of this often covered song, my favorite from all the performances I have heard.

  • No, Cohen is Quebecer (he is born in Montréal and he still lives there

  • HI!

ONE OF THE BEST COVERS - TAKÁCS NIKOLAS

    BRILLIANT!!!

    LISTEN THIS VERSION TOO!

    THANKS!:)

  • I love this song. I love it because it can be taken so many different ways, it has so many different meanings. No version is the best version, because each version has a different motivation behind the performance and the arrangement. I do a version of it myself, and of course I like mine the best, because it appeals to my emotions specifically. Everyone is going to favor a different version, possibly because they see the song in a different way, and their favorite version appeals to them.

  • one of the best versions of the song..

his song is so sad for soem reason...

  • @XxPepperMintxX - because it's got minor chords in it ;)

  • Great another teenage punk, trying to tell me what's up.......I'm a number of years your senior and heard it all before boy! Now you can go back to your boy band and pretend you can make music or you can be a good kid and study real hard in school to try to be something in life before it's to late. Buckley is far superior then Rice, listen to the arraignment's it's Buckley's.

  • This guy really gets this song. He sings it with the correct amount of emotion. Well done......Very well done ! This is my favorite song and you sang it as good or better than everyone elses version. Congrats!

  • Leonard Cohen, is a legend, Jeff Buckley, and Rufus also a legend... But this is a really nice version too.... Have to admit, Rufus Wainwrights version is my fav... dont really mind were any of them are from.. But can i ad Damien Rice is IRISH! So happy days... :)

  • I've done a cover of 'Older Chests'. Take a look :)

  • youtube.com/watch?v=Hm7p0ghs-k0&feature=related?

  • A great version of a great lament....a sad prayer

  • Personally I think this is the best cover of this song :)

  • Accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. I don't care who doesn't like this. A Great Artist in anyones book. Kudos.

  • better than alexandra, jeff still better...

  • More Irish mediocridity, what is all these bullshit comments about how wonderful this version is I've heard them all. Just fucking tone deaf if anyone, I mean anyone can't hear Buckley's is easily the most perfect version of this song.

  • @nat00ben06 Perfection is really an subjective opinion, similar to beauty. Sometimes i find that its the slight imperfections that make something beautiful, as in nature or art. I do like buckley's version and feel it was sang better, however something about the numerous damien rice versions (not so much this one) that makes me feel the singers pain deeper, as if he understands the experience better ... just my two cents :)

  • @nat00ben06 mediocrity? are you an idiot? this is amazing. and even if you don't like his version of this song, go look up "cannonball" and "the blower's daughter". damien rice is not mediocre!!

  • @nat00ben06: Ok I agree with you about Buckley's version being great, I'm not gona say the best as, as far as I'm concerned the original is the best, but Buckley's version is amazing. However, I have to disagree with you about the "Irish mediocrity" comment. As I'm Irish apart from being insulted at the comment, it's just plain wrong!! You need to go and listen to his album 'O' and then try and say that he's mediocre! You need to open your ears mate!

  • @aoifs22 I'm American, and "O" is on constant rotation at my house. Damien is brilliant.

  • jeff buckley still wins!

  • really nice song

  • *song

  • Amamzing son and amazing voice

  • @Aliena22221 song*

  • @fetilaradu thanks

  • PEOPLE. Music is open to interpretation. For some people, the definitive version will be Cohen's. For others, Buckley's. And for others, Wainright's, etc.

I think we all can agree that this is a beautiful song, no matter who the singer is, and stop hating all the people who disagree. Musicality is relative, especially when it comes to covers, so it's quite futile to hate someone who just doesn't like what you do.

  • I think he's one of the very few successors of Cohen alive.

  • How can this happen? One sometimes gets tired of hearing it so much. How can you get tired of eating ham?

  • @bmuscat, Thanks - 2:25 AM at Pacific Grove, California 25 October 2010 and you made me laugh.

  • @bmuscat : ), If you were in front of me, I'd hand hug you.

  • @bmuscat and well, john cale is gay too.

(but, the sexuality of the artist, really matters?)

  • @bmuscat

    number 4 is best ... :D

  • @bmuscat lmao. thanks for the list, just made my day a little. #5. K.D. Land is a lesian, a vegan AND Canadian. Rofl

  • @bmuscat lol. Good comments.

  • @bmuscat

hahaha top! but you are so right with this comment :)

  • @bmuscat

And Allison Crowe's version is one of the best covers I've ever had the privilege of hearing say for Jeff Buckley's.

  • @bmuscat

And Allison Crowe's version is one of the best covers I've ever had the privilege of hearing say for Jeff Buckley's.

  • @bmuscat pro.

  • @bmuscat Really? 113 likes for that bigoted, ignorant statement? Youtube is full of asshole trolls, but I wouldn't expect them all to be watching Leonard Cohen videos.

  • @bmuscat

you are god(ess)! we need more of your concise, pertinent and pointed commentary. (tho' you might want to add that, yes, K.D. Lang is barefooted)

  • @bmuscat so what if people refer to this as a "shrek" song..there may be a lot of young listeners, children, who heard this song first on Shrek, so they associate it with Shrek. There is no need for an elitist attitude and make them feel bad about it.

  • @bmuscat cursing "damn" while reviewing "Hallelujah"......ignoramus

  • @bmuscat

    thanx for the reminder

I'd just like to point out that Leonard Cohen version is terrible, lame, gloomy, and I hate it.

and I do like Leonard Cohen a lot ( "Suzanne" and so many beautiful songs)...

  • @Jessminder3

It's supposed to be sad and gloomy! It's not a happy and cheerful song, it's meant to be sad!

  • @bmuscat hehehehhe. nice point of view

  • @bmuscat

    Awesome!

  • @bmuscat THATS FUNNY SHIT...

  • @bmuscat damn mate/girl. nice reply ;) and GO CANADIANS :D just teasin

  • @bmuscat Leonard Cohen is kind of Canadian. The Jewish type

  • @bmuscat I second that, for sure!

  • @bmuscat i would like to give 310 thumbs down! first and for all you should not post comments 'to copy', second rufus wainright isn't gay, he has the best version of the song and it was him who did the shrek version and there are MUCH more covers than 6 and the one above sux

  • @bmuscat Thanks for saying what was in desperate need of being said.

  • i love how he stays very true to the song. he dosnt try to change it and fool people into thinking its his own. he stays very true to the song and lets people know he is doing a cover.

  • He's got such a great voice and he sings from the heart.... that is why the audience can actually feel the emotion... what a marvelous singer and musician...

I hope with his talent, I hope that he'll be more successful than ever! =)

  • check out alter bridges cover of this

  • Regardless of who does amazing covers of this song (and yeah, I think this is a pretty good cover, really love Jeff Buckleys cover too) can we just agree this is a damn good song. And Leonard Cohen deserves big props for composing it.

  • Now I've heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord; but you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth; the minor fall, the major lift.

    The baffled king composing Hallelujah.

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

  • This song pierces my soul..everytime..

Damien Rice gives a gripping performance here. Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley's renditions are excellent as well. Also an honorable mention to Kate Voegele..she sounds like an angel singing this..

  • search for "hallelujah elisa" for me, the best version

  • Wow this version is absolutely terrible.
