@TheNikkigreeneyes What undid Detroit was diversification of their capital. Getting into financial services and believing the sales of stock makes money instead of sales of well-produced cars got them into trouble. They were being outperformed by Toyota and Honda by the end of the 1980s. The GM motto of economy of scale got trashed by Japanese reliability and German engineering.
LOL at the length...it's only a few inches longer than your precious damn Mustang. Basically from the wheelwells down, it IS a Mustang, chassis-wise.
Yes, a 5.4 will fit, but the valve covers will stick through the hood.
As far as handling, the active suspension was better than most domestic cars in it's class lol. Do a little research...what undid Detroit was gas prices, unions, and a sagging economy. That, and the craze for SUV's.

What was Ford thinking back then? Maybe they thought it was still 1978. A two door the length of a minivan... WTF?! It's just too much car for the purpose of a sports luxury coupe. You can fit a 5.4L in that nose cone. And stack up bodies like corkwood in that trunk.
@mustangcharger1 It was too big to be a personal sports-luxury car. These models helped undo Detroit. The handling was awful due to its size and weight. There must be a video of the car in action. Now if you're talking about the ad itself, remember it was the flashy 80s. They could've hired a music video director to make a better ad. This ad is virtually unchanged from most Ford ads from the late-70s. Defintely geared towards older buyers.
@dstarks80 There was nothing else to buy. The numbers couldn't have been that high the car was changed the following year. This particular generation only lasted about five years.
@hulkhatepunybanner Not to directly disagree, but in case ya haven't noticed, new sport coupes are just as big if not bigger on average...take the fatass GTO for example, or the 3600+lb Camaro, or GOD FORBID the ridiculous new Challenger...apparently the oil crisis didn't teach us much of anything....waitin for Cadillac to roll out a new 5,000lb boat....it would seem "safety" or the illusion of it, is more important than being able to afford gas to GET in an accident in the first place.
lembro quando este carro foi restilizado em 1987, e foi o carro do ano nos eua, esse carro tem o motor feito ak no brazil , podem pesquisar q nao e´mentira ,
@iXchani91 The car has exceptional quality as I have an 88 that still rides and drives great and is as quiet as a new one. If you ever get a chance to ride or drive one, I believe you will want one for the performance, economy, luxury and utility. My son just bought one that needs a little cosmetic work but he is driving it daily and parked his other car.
I convinced my mom to get one when I was 17. I had a 1969 Mustang convertible for myself, red, white top, 351W, Magnum 500 rims. One winter night borrowed her car, '87 TC manual tranny. Passed a local Cobb County Ga Patrol car on I-75 southbound under Windy Hill with the tach at 6300 rpm. It was below freezing outside and the turbo loved it. he flashed his lights once, then I changed lanes to get on I-285. under the bridge I discovered why NASCAR has rear spoilers. Passed a minivan backwards.
@Annihilator1111 The ones with the automatic, were built in the Ontario, Canada plant. Had 2 of these. The one, was built in Kansas city (1988 TC, manual). The other, was built in Ontario (1988 TC, automatic).
@sleak112 According to my spec sheet the manual was rated at 240hp, whereas the automatic was rated at 190hp. The manual had a T-63 turbine, whereas the auto had a T-48 turbine.
I had an 88 Turbo coupe, turned heads anywhere i went , took better care of that car than i did myself i Loved that car ,even met my wife while i had it. problem was it would be in for servicing more often than at home .Beautiful car not very powerful but man what a lemon it was.
@adiosk8r91 My '88 Turbo Coupe had a sensor on the rearview mirror to automatically dim your bright lights. The car also had automatic lights, ABS, moonroof, keyless entry, factory equalizer, octane switch for boost control. It was an awesome first car.
Pretty sure all 4banger t-birds had turbo. Mustang and ranger were the only ones to receive the 2.3 without turbo because of the size of the bird a turbo was the best way to go.
my dad had an 88 turbocoupe 2.3t 5-speed, dual flowmasters blacked out everything...i drove that thing to senior prom, then over the summer my dad wrecked it, its a shame, it was an awesome fast nice car :(
@MrRobGT yes he did wreck it. and almost died from it, lost his short term memory, cant catch his breath internal bleeding, 3 broken ribs. How about thinking before you comment?
@Z3CHYD just a joke dude, take a chill pill! How about getting a sense of humor? There's no way anyone would have known that and talking like that wont get you an apology from anyone.
@MrRobGT well if someone says there dad wrecked a car, usually the other people have the common sense not to joke about it. I dont expect an apology from anyone. i have a sense of humor, but I save it things that are "funny"
@Z3CHYD what do you want an apology? Ok sorry... Feel better? FWIW, I am looking into getting one of these to restore and add some power, kind of like a touring car deal. My 4.6 stang is no good on long trips and I thought with all the new turbo tech out there, this would be a cool restomod.. How do they ride? Firm like a stang or soft like a lincoln?
@MrRobGT I said I DIDNT expect an apology but anyways whats done is done. Onto talking like adults lol. To answer your question, my dads t-coupe had 150k miles on it and it rode alrite, the rear liked to sway alot though, but I blame that on the 13 in wide tires lol. On the highway it did great, 30 mpg at the least. With 220hp stock on a 2.3 4-banger I wasn't complaining lol
@Z3CHYD The one in this commercial looks nice. If I found one it would have to be immaculate. Thats going to be hard to do, i'll probably get a lincoln mark 8 w/ dohc 4.6 since its much easier to find. I have an SUV as well (mountaineer) but its not what I would consider a good cruise for long trips. 30mpg with good turbo hp is hard to beat for a road trip vehicle... thanks for the info.
@MrRobGT stiff like a stang, but have electronic adjust mchpersons, which still work on my 88, i have a dark blue 88, every option but cup holders, and who needs em im too busy spoolin her up and watching the needle bounce off 85 :)

Why apply current standards to something over twenty years old? It looks great. You're simply applying prejudices of today.
