My husband and I were in Rio de Janeiro for a couple of weeks actually twice in 2003 and loved it. We felt very safe all the time. We also fell in love with the city. Absolutely beautiful and wonderful people. We found it to be very friendly.
The beach is good, but the city is dangerous, God that forgives me, now in 2008 to a serious epidemic of disease transmitted by an insect, Brazilian of other areas, they avoid to go to Rio, tie foreign tourists.
A very nice beach, In Australia we have beaches like this that run for thousands of miles. Our Gold Coast is similar to Ipanema. Mountain background looks VERY NICE.
