Lived near Jacksonville, NC where these things would fly over my horse farm. They make a sound so different from anything else. They would make the windows rattle when they flew overhead. Go USMC!

Because the rotors are connected via a cross shaft you would have to have dual engine failure to have a problem. Fortunately the chances of that happening are very remote because, like any rotor craft with high disk loading, a tilt rotor doesn't auto rotate very well. I would think that if it's altitude were high enough, the pilot could pitch the nose down and glide like any other fixed wing aircraft.

Can the Osprey glide when there is an engine failure and the rotors are at the vertical position ?
