Craig is one of my favorite composers. During college our choral director frequently had us perform pieces he had composed (she's also in Conspirare). I'm so glad I was introduced to his music - and this piece is one of my favorites of his!
Craig came to our school here in Leander, Texas and cliniced us on our UIL songs...this being one of our songs:) and we got straiht ones, love you Craig!!
I'm singing this for my choir contest, and I never understood quite how beautiful this piece was until I heard him sing this. It's absolutely amazing, and I don't think our choir does this song justice. But I'm so glad I found this song nevertheless. :)
Of all poets, Emily Dickinson is one of the most frequently set to music. Google "Emily Dickinson set to music" for other scores. Also recmusic dot org will give you a history of the many publications of this poem's musical settings. The tradition of singing poetry dates to the 4th c. B.C. and has never been labeled "stealing."
Two of the most extraordinary talents of Craig Hella Johnson are 1.) eliciting a perfection of choral sound and balance with technique so flawless, only beauty is experienced; and 2.) arranging and intertwining musical accompaniments that not only embrace the the moment but also seamlessly transport us from one emotional plane to another (most especially noted in the Christmas concerts).
complete and total trash. absolutely sickening. this is not music. who would write such a simplistic copy-cat inane melody? and this whole choir and this man makes me ill to watch.I watched this DVD once and couldn't get though it because of the awful music and the horrific HD close-ups.
@WorldCupSeoul perhaps you're unable to appreciate such "simple" music. How exactly is it a copy-cat melody? I would like to hear your opinion better explained because it currently looks more like rantings of someone who cannot really appreciate simple, well-written choral music. Do elaborate on it so I can better understand why you think his music is so terrible.
@WorldCupSeoul You are clearly not a musician or any other artist by any sense of the meaning nor are you someone who possesses the intelligence to be one, let alone a critic. I could go on and on explaining the make up of this piece and the significance behind the phrasing, motives, progression, dynamic and rhythmic expression, cadences, etc. and connect them to the text using a bunch of theory jargon, but you could never hope to understand what I'm talking about. So please stay in your place
Wow, that just took my breath away. Our chorus teacher Kate Murray at paideia, is teaching it to us and I swear, it is the prettiest song that we are singing in our next concert...
yes, please . ; )

I think this poem is sarcastic and a little bit bitter, but also shows humor.

Yay Mom! You're inspiring. This arrangement, Craig's voice, and the cello are perfect. Love.

@WorldCupSeoul Who are you to define what music is and is not? There is such beauty in simplicity. Don't miss out on it.
Such a beautiful work. This and Eliza Gilkyson's "Requiem" are my favorites of Craig's works.

Emily Dickinson died in 1886. I'm pretty sure Craig did not steal this from her.
