This is true; synthesizers were not widely used until this period in music; however, while in the late seventies and early eighties it was a great breakthrough, I'm afraid as time went on it was abused and overly exploited until it was no longer an innovative sound. They did this with disco. While many of the earlier disco recordings were great (I'm thinking of Van McCoy and the Spinners' version of "Working My Way Back to You," as well as the Hues Corporation, it became it's own anecdote.

@margolou2010 New Wave opened many doors: the most important was the doorway to acceptance of synthesizers in popular music; without New Wave, many very important artists never would have felt as free as they did; (NIN, Skinny Puppy, etc.) and we would have missed out on much. Synths had been used in disco, and Art-Rock, but New Wave happened in a time of revolution, which was punk. Everyone accepted punk. So, too did they New Wave. Disco and Art Rock were never truly accepted in the mainstream.
