I Like Epica very much, and I know they will come to Portugal in April. The country is in recession, and I'm going to be a father in August so I've to save money. Therefore, before buying the expensive tickets, I decided I had to check some Epica live stuff. Well... I'm not going to the concert. I'm not disappointed with the band at all, and I’m still a big fun, and intended to see them live one day. Although, before that happens, Simone must concentrate on her voice, and not on her act (cont)

Since we've had the fancy term 'coloratura' bandied about here with some abandon (is it because the daft Wiki entry about her uses the term?) - to put an end to this nonsense would somebody please point out a single passage sung by Simone which uses Coloratura tecnique? (yes you can look that up on Wiki too !!!!)

(Sorry -it came out as colatura in my comment below which is an Italian anchovy sauce Lets try and keep food out of it! - mmm delicious)

@Serinia4melodic u sent me private message but this is a public forum on YouTube so i reply here. You refer to start of a video - I think its Tide of Time-Pinkpop 2010 - is that correct? If so I hear no evidence of falsetto in that - timbre of voice sounds identical to rest - and its beauitful (apart from dodgy first note). Putting aside all the technical jargon you chuck around - YouTubers can recognise Falsetto straightaway (eg. later Be Gees !!!!) and it sounds phoney (hence the false!).

@Serinia4melodic As regards classical training you still bang on about. She had a handful of lessons and sang in a choir for two months (she has said this in many interviews). Of course she is classically influenced (but is also Rock/metal influenced) and has a naturally beautiful voice - but that does NOT make her classically trained. She is a Metal/Rock chick vocalist with a gorgeous voice and can on ocassion (but sparsely) 'imitate' an operatic voice, which she does to brilliant effect.

@Serinia4melodic  As regards Wiki -if you read my replies more carefully you will see that I disagree with Wiki and regard its entry on Simone as absurd and in need of rewriting -so I DON'T get my information from there!! You also say that: 'every note under G5 without the use of the thyroarytenoid muscle is in falsetto'. But we all recognise when falsetto (in males) kicks in (we dont like it and make fun oif it) - it doesn't trigger at any specified pitch but depends on the individual voice.

No hablo del estilo que esta tocando. Es más, mirad mi canal si quereis hablar con propiedad; me gusta el metal sinfónico. Hablo de su tecnica vocal. Tiene un chorro de voz y lo frena utilizando la garganta y no el pecho. Ni siquiera se ayuda resonando en la nariz. En fin, ahí teneis la explicación. =)

Mas a Sisi ao vivo...não fico muito satisfeito não,parece que não consegue colocar força na voz,como a Floor coloca e nem consegue cantar tão alto igual a Tarja faz...

Shes not going for those very top notes I think the voice is just a little bit tired by now - not surprised - it must be an incredible strain singing this demanding stuff live. There's no other female Metal singer in the world can do what she can do. Disappointed though she didn't rotate the hair at 2.53 although enjoyed watching the crowd!

@cobhc246 I have.Sleeping Sun is one of my favourite songs and of course they inspired Simone to take up singing.However Simone can do what Tarja can't.And Tarja can do what Simone can't. You can't compare them (although everybody does!).We must be eternally grateful to Tarja for inspiring Simone.Maybe I'm a bit blinkered over Simone (Obsessed !?). But it isn't her looks (beautiful although she is). It's her voice/technique/stage presence/complete empathy with the music. She just IS a class act.

@jezkn =)) What she can do.. she barely covers 1.5 octaves in all studio recordings=)))) jeez.. it`s ok to love epica and simone but don`t be deluded... Tarja is just 1 example of 2 live vocal range. Coloratura passages...sustained notes etc

@Serinia4melodic It wasn't me that brought Tarja up -i was trying to stop these ridiculous comparisons. I wouldn't associate Simone with colaratura. For a start she's not opera trained (unlike Tarja) although she does an operatic impersonation sometimes and she doesn't use colaratura type ornamentation. She's got more metzo with time but can handle over two octaves with ease. However i agree that her 'tessitura' if you want to use an opera term covers about one and half octaves

@jezkn Yes, she is nothing near her full potential. If you want to giver her 2 octaves, then she uses falsetto. (it`s like head voice but with max 2 overtones) Her full voice has 1,5 octaves range. Mezzos do coloratura too... if trained. However she nails it when she sings... with not much of a stable technique. She`s a natural. a little off pitch but many don`t even hear that. so \m/ epica.

But - we're talking about her as if she's operatic. She isn't (and thankgoodness for that!). She doesn't do coloratura. I only used word Metzo to describe her range but she goes above that. I cld give several examples where she sings high (soprano) beautifully.She has her own unique style >

And thankgoodness for that for she would sound silly if she did! But the way she sometimes brings in that pseudo operatic style in middle of a 'rock' section is simply brilliant. I haven't heard any other 'metal' vocalist in the world do that like she does. That's one (of many) reasons why she's SO special.

You can hear the pure vowels, the impostation is lower than in pop and its not crunchy as in rock. Falsetto is actually used to develop your voice. it is very essential for strengthening the singing muscles. there is just less vibration in the chords and therefore the volume is lower. high soprano is E6:D

That does NOT make her classically trained -and has recieved NO formal opera training (neither do we want her to!!). She was well into Metal bands then and inspired by Nightwish and Tarja to take up vocals not classical music. Wiki has a page on her which is utter garbage and needs rewriting (ANYBODY??!!).Amanda Somerville helped her to 'belt it out'>

It is WRONG (and disengenuous ) to describe her as a 'colatura metzo soprano'. Because she is NOT an opera singer. Neither does she use colatura tecnique (she doesn't have a tecnique). When she does go into opera mode - its not with an operatic tecnique (but still sounds fantastic). However she wouldn't (and shouldn't!!) ever get a job as a opera singer !! She also has a fantastic rock voice and can 'belt it out' as well as sing so sweetly. It is this 'mixing and matching' - 'chopping and changing' that makes her so utterly brilliant.Epica sometimes don't do justice to her.
