For all you know it might not have had a disease. And of course take precautions, like don't pick it up with bare hands, and have an isolated cage or somethign to keep it in until you go to a vet. And some pet stores treat the rats very badly because they are just sold as food, so they don't care much for them.

The plague was a bad spike for rats, and any other animal was just as prone to getting fleas that transmitted the plague, including humans.
