  • Admittedly the only Buckley song i had ever heard before this was 'hallelujah' of course... but wow, they are quite alike. I think Jeff has more smoothness and control over his voice, Matt has better vibrato. They both have fantastic falsetto.... good lord, I'll always pick Matt Bellamy though because I am a biased person when it comes to comparisons with Muse hahaha. Buckley is DAMN amazing though!

  • I'm a HUGE Jeff Buckley fan.. I'm also a huge Muse fan. ... I love Matt Bellamy.. I love Jeff Buckley.. I think they're both fantastic.. My brain is broken when I listen to them both in one video. I would LOVE to hear Matt do a Jeff Buckley cover. I think I would explode XD However, unfortunately.. Jeff Buckley will always win in my heart <3 The last minute of "Grace" will always surpass just about anything anyone could ever sing to me. However, I would have to say that Matt comes a close second

  • @Gert2774 Highest sung note at least. The technique on it is amazing.

  • And their both fantastic live. Their whacky vocal improvisations are... revolutionary! Inspirational. :) Don't ever hate on either. They're both total Gods.

  • I adore Matt Bellamy with all my heart, but I honestly can't choose between the two. I love Jeff Buckley's Grace (the whole album, not just the song), and I know that when Muse were recording Showbiz (the whole album...!) their producer at the time turned Matt on to Jeff Buckley for vocal inspiration, and I think it shows.

If I hadn't heard Matt first, I'd never have listened to Jeff Buckley. They're both fantastic people with fantastic voices.

I don't think it's fair to compare the two.

  • Love Matt Bellamy but Jeff wins hands down.

  • Matt is good, but Jeff is a God.

  • What is the song at 6:30? I'm sorry I'm a HUGE Jeff Buckley fan and even I don't know this song.

  • @TheRealMusic78 yard of blonde girls. fantastic song man

  • @TheNostalgicBeats thanks man :D

  • @TheNostalgicBeats Reeks of early Weezer doesn't it?

  • lets face it they're both pretty darn good, whether you like em' or not

  • Matt bellamy has a similar vocal range. BUt jeff's variety and flexibility and tone was a league above matts apologies. MAtt is good in terms of his band's work but he a rock singer, Jeff was a natural born singer who stylistically was gifted and able to pick up different style with ease. People only compare Bellamy with Jeff as they think Bellmay has a similar range but I think buckley has a greater range. Also I think people are desperate to hear a Jeff's voice again so they hope bellamy is

  • Agreed that both are great and very well talented, check out the work of Jimmy Gnecco his vocals are just as amazing.

  • Both great singers. I would personally say Jeff Buckley is a true tenor with amazing natural range in his full voice, and an amazing falsetto. Matty Bellamy is more of Baritone with very good control of his head voice, but his range cuts off a lot quicker in his full chest. However, Matt's full chest voice is thicker and more powerful , suited more to hard rock than Jeff. Honestly, these two artists used their strengths extremely well and a comparison is not neccessary. Both great :-)

  • Well they're both better better than justintossbieber

  • I think we are all fogetting that Jeff and Matt are to completely diffirent artists. To compare Jeff to Matt Bellamy is tempting but wrong. Jeff was heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, particulary Robert Plant. Could we compare Jeff to Robert Plant, of course not as it would be disrespectful . I am sure if we were to ask Matt Bellamy if he has been influenced by Jeff he would say yes and show the highest respect for him as an artist.Thats what Jeff would have wanted, to inspire not be compared.

  • @Kangaroo7194 Matt has already stated Jeff as an inspiration on several occations :)

  • "So real" should be compared with "overdue" by muse

  • Jeff was an awesome entertainer as well. On Live at Sin-e Legacy Edition, he does a Miles Davis monologue where he imitates Miles' saxophone with his voice.

  • @ericlord821 At Olympia, he owned the audience, singing to them at times in French. I love the part in "Hallelujah" where he improvises ... "I used to live with Leonard before I knew you." What a cool way to credit Leonard Cohen as the writer of the song ...

  • @imkeylime Yeah I got that album too. It's one of my favorite live albums. My favorite version of Dream Brother is on it. His vocal talent really shows in that performance.

  • Jeff= The Better Vocalist

    Matt= The Better Performer/Entertainer

    End of Case

  • @Troy211619 Exactly. Matt is the better Britney Spears.

  • @TwiRobism Only better in everything, even sex appeal..xD

  • @Troy211619 Make up your mind.

  • @TwiRobism EVERYTHING< That's how great Matt Bellamy is..:)

  • @Troy211619 That's such a cool story, brah. Take care.

  • @TwiRobism I know right?\m/

  • this isn't even a contest. Bellamy wouldn't even be the singer he is without Jeff Buckley's influence. Back in the time of grunge, Buckley made it cool to have a beautiful voice and sing one's heart out at those high notes. Singers that came after like Bellamy, Yorke, Gnecco obviously studied and copied Buckley to a certain extent. Anyway, but in terms of the technicals, yes Buckley had a wider range, better voice control, and talent to take the listeners to a very delicate place.

  • i think that Bellammy is better at singin rock songs though, whereas when buckley tried to go full out fast/thrashy I don't think his voice always held up as well, and it started to sound too shrieky. Though in some performances I noticed he sounded pretty good; I think that he didn't find quite find his vocal style for that kind of music yet So bellammy wins that.

  • @Themexicanguanorat Check out Jeff Buckley singing Kick Out The Jams. He can definitely sing fast/thrashy without sounding shrieky.

  • @Themexicanguanorat Bullshit. Malign Fiesta (No Soul), Eternal Life (live Road Version), Kick Out the Jams, Ace of Spades, I Woke Up In A Strange Place, Strawberry Street & Alligator Wine would like to have a word with you. Stick to commenting on subjects you understand. You'll be wrong less often. So Buckley wins in all vocal categories. :)

  • Matt's voice is alot more shrill, and has less breadth to it.

  • Funny thing is: Even though Matt is a baritone (I actually think he may be a low tenor or high baritone), he rarely does any 2nd octave singing & has only been able to get down to A2. Whereas Jeff, a high tenor, regularly reached B2, A2, G2 and even an F#2 during warm ups for Mojo Pin and Dream Brother.

  • Their voices r totally different, Jeff a tenor, Matt a baritone...But putting tht aside Jeff had an almost perfect vocal technique, he was so in control of his voice, while Matt's has notorious faults specially on his falsetto,so from a professional point of view Jeff is by far a better singer and my personal favorite...But I luv Matt aswell, he is a great musician, singer, performer and frontman of my fav band.

  • I have always thought their voices are slightly similar! ...Matt has stolen mt heart, and i would say he has won, He can hit the highs, lows and makes me cry with emotion!!! I also prefer his music and songs, But Jeff is very good too : )

  • Huge Muse fan BTW

  • ok do shoot me down . I'm just learning of Jeff Buckely today. and jeff wins. from what I've read Matt is influenced by jefff as well as thom yorke. Kinda explains why people compared radiohead and muse alot . Jeff seems to have a lot more control and freedom in his singing

  • @mantranova You should try and get a copy of Buckley's Grace, and a Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk is recommended too. Buckley wasn't with us long enough to record a lot, but what he left is exceptional. Fake Plastic Trees was inspired by Buckley, as is Bellamy.

  • @Valaquin yea i think i will man this guy is awesome .

  • @mantranova they're both amazing. trying to determine who's better is pretty stupid if u guyz ask me.

  • Let's be honest, I LOVE Matt Bellamy but he really isn't even a good singer. He's got a strange tone of voice and that's what makes him. Jeff on the other hand, had one of the largest ranges of any singer in the 20th century - 3 1/2 octaves, and had an absolutely beautiful voice and the uncanny ability to go from a pure beautiful note to a scream without a pause. Jeff Buckley was also a lyrical genius and his melodies and timing accompanied his songs in ways that are impossible to replicate

  • Even Bellamy would admit that this is a no brainer. Buckley beats him in every way aspect of singing

  • @liamm5687 no. Thats your opinion as well as others. Matthew Bellamy is amazing at singing, so is Jeff, you can't really compare them to one another.

  • @GloriousEscape It's not my opinion. It is fact that Jeff Buckley is technically a much better singer. He has a 4 octave range and Matt Bellamy has around 3. That is huge difference. Jeff Buckley can also scream more powerfully and sustain notes for longer. You may like Matt's voice better. But it is fact that Jeff Buckley is a better singer by a huge amout.

  • @liamm5687 But many people would contradict that fact. Facts are something known to many, not many people would agree with the fact. I KNOW Jeff Buckley is technically a better singer, but to rule out the fact that Matthew is as good is incorrect.

  • @GloriousEscape I think that anybody who knew anything about singing would know that Jeff Buckley is a better singer. But like I said you can like Matt's voice better if you want. That your opinion. But saying Matt is as good at singing as Jeff Buckley is like saying that is like saying is like saying Phill Collins is a better drummer than Keith Moon or Bob Dylan is as good at guitar solos as Eddie Van Helan or some other ridiculous comparison.

  • @liamm5687 It would be much appreciated if you didn't imply i knew nothing about singing. Anyone who could READ would have noticed i said Jeff Buckley IS a better singer, i just prefer Matt. Its not ridicualous, its taste.

  • @GloriousEscape I said in both my last two comments that I have no problem with you liking Matt's voice better. I never implied you knew nothing about singing. When I said that anybody who knew anything about singing would know that Jeff Buckley was a better singer, that included you, because you yourself did say that Jeff Buckley was technically a better singer. Maybe it's you who can't read?

  • @liamm5687 Maybe you should make your intentions clearer hm?

  • @liamm5687

Exactly, bellamy knows where he stands. He can easily admit he is no match for Buckley. Yet he feels free to make fun of a band like my chemical romance for instance. Thats what i admire about him

  • you picked the worst songs for matt, if your gonna compare the two at least pick their best works

  • @MrSandyBallz Sorry you think that. What would you have suggested?

  • Vocal Range: Jeff Buckley - G2 - A5 (full voice) - G6 (falsetto) Matt Bellamy - A2 - Bb4 (full voice) A5 (falsetto) Vibrato Control: Buckley - Subtle natural vibrato. Shook his head for a wider effect. Less control. Bellamy - Excellent wide natural vibrato. Great control. Register Switching & Register Blending: Buckley Diction: Tied Breath Support & Sustain: Buckley Difficulty of material and vocal runs: Buckley Power & Resonance: Buckley Guitar skills: Buckley Piano skills: Bellamy
  • @TheJazzhistorian Agreed completely.

  • @TheJazzhistorian I'm sorry, did you say G6?! Is there a good tune where I can check that out? That's over an octave above my highest note!

  • @TheJazzhistorian Nice analysis, but Buckley's vibrato is one of his best features. Far better than Bellamy's. Also, Buckley has an A1 in full voice (believe it or not) and I don't recall him hitting a G6, F#6 was the highest I heard and that was in an interview.

  • Jeff Buckley. No comment required.

  • Check out "I shall be released" by Buckley over the phone to a radio station. Is amazing. search for it...

  • No Brainer... Buckley hands down. Bellamy is Good, but Buckley is God. Buckleys voice isnt so nasal, he has a wider range, deeper, hoarser scream, and his note peaks are softer and more suttle. He was a phemonenal song writer, both lyrically and musically. You dont hear the gasps in between notes and pitch changes. If you asked Bellamy himself, he would admit he doesnt compare to Jeff Buckley. Bellamy is a more technical guitar player, and is a force to be reckoned with on the piano however...

  • ill go with jeff buckley all the way, not only because he has a better voice (which i think, feel free to disagree) but because he also is more unique. his songs does not fit in, and thats why i like him so much. matt bellamy and muse themselves are now becoming mainstream.

  • Jeff has a cleaner voice, as someone mentioned before he didnt make that noise Matt does of taking huge breath before some sentences. But believe me, I love both voices, matt is more like dramatic kind of.

Im a huge Muse fan too, just saw them 1 month ago, fuck man best concert of my life so far.

  • @InfectedAlex I love both too. Muse live are better than they are on record.

  • it is clear that you like jeff best, you show him like 2 minutes, and then Bellamy for like 10 seconds, well go Bellamy

  • matt does not have the range of jeff buckley, jeff is a legend!!!

  • bellamy has a wider range and power, but i think they re too different to compare...two really great singers tho

  • well jeff bucley its a super super good singer but i like more the style of bellamy anyway booth are cools (bellamy wins xD)

  • buckley is the best singer of all time, he can sing anything..here him sing didos lament...bellamy is no match for buckley.

  • well i think matt winns no matter what!!!

  • @MissMatteyTalks The only thing that puts me off Bellamy is that at the start of every new sentence he takes in a sharp intake of breath. It's annoying if you notice, and Buckley can really make his voice soar. I love both though, so I tried to put both of their best vocals into the video.
