my biology prof said mitochondria dna? does not change. She said that current research (1990's) could not trace the same mitochondria in monkeys and apes to humans?? Anybody ever heard of anything like this or know of any good articles relating to this?

It has normal changes just like nuclear DNA, the difference is that this mitochondrial DNA follows the mother's line and mutates to change where nuclear DNA gets it's information from both gametes and mutations are usually recessive.

I would disagree with that, if anything modern genetics have cast a cloud of doubt on the entire theory. For example, Genetics have proven that one of our supposed Darwinian ancestors, the Neanderthals have no genetic link to modern humans, they are no more our ancestors than modern chimpanzees are, yet for decades they were put forward as such, and (erroneosly)sometimes still are.
This is why Darwinian evolution models are in crisis, hard science is punching major holes in the theory.

Apology accepted. What I'm saying is that a core tenant of this theory has been disproven by genetics. Further genetic research has shown us that there are distinct differences between us and some of the ancestors incorrectly attributed to us. By disproving Darwins belief in pangenesis with hard science, Mendel's laws also showed a huge flaw in the entire concept/structure.
Genetics does not rely on darwinian evolution models because they have been proven to be incorrect. I hope that helps...

In fact it is so significant that it calls the entire theory into question. Pangenesis was one of Darwin's tenant beliefs, without it much of the rest of his theory falls apart. As you stated it was proven later to be invalid as have many of Darwin's other predictions. Darwin's theory appears to be in crisis.

Mendel disagreed with Darwin's theory. He read Origin of Species and commented on it, he disagreed with pangenesis and shared his thoughts about it with others. The neo-darwinist movement could not prove pangenesis so they adopted Mendelian Laws as a substitute, however these laws have never been able to conclusively prove evolution, thus it remains a theory.
No, Mendel's work provided the answer that had alluded Darwin during his lifetime. It provided a model for inheritance and adaptation. Evolution is a theory yes but you're using the layman's definiton, not the scientific one.

It has normal changes just like nuclear DNA, the difference is that this mitochondrial DNA follows the mother's line and mutates to change where nuclear DNA gets it's information from both gametes and mutations are usually recessive.
Looks like your teacher does not deserve to be referred to as a professor. No professor would make such a claim unless they were absent during that lecture on mitochondrial DNA.

Whilst it is true that education generally decreases the likelihood off belief in a god, that doesn't mean the only people who believe in a god are idiots. But yes, anyone with a phd who is a proponent of ID is, in fact, an idiot, especially if they are working within the field of biological science.

I would disagree with that, if anything modern genetics have cast a cloud of doubt on the entire theory. For example, Genetics have proven that one of our supposed Darwinian ancestors, the Neanderthals have no genetic link to modern humans, they are no more our ancestors than modern chimpanzees are, yet for decades they were put forward as such, and (erroneosly)sometimes still are.
This is why Darwinian evolution models are in crisis, hard science is punching major holes in the theory.

Yep, whole heartedly agree. The neanderthal is not our ancestor, that's been known for some time. They are related to us in a similar way to chimps. They branched off from a common ancestor, moved into europe before homo sapiens and were out competed by our ancestors. That's not evolution in crisis, it's a new understanding of our ancestry.
I think we're going to have to amicably agree to disagree here, this discussion is really getting no where and once more I apologise for harsh language.

The unified theory of evolution is based on Darwin's theory, which you admitted is based on pangenesis, which you admitted is incorrect. Do you see where that leaves the unified theory of evolution?
I agree with you that the theory of evolution is in crisis and perhaps it is time to scrap it for something better, or at least something that stands up to the evidence. As you stated, this theory does not.

Let me break this down. There is this thing we called science. Science is adaptable. Science changes our world view as we learn more. Evolution theory has adpated to include Mendel's work which proves evolution to be true far better than pangenesis did for obvious reasons. Now either say something relevant or I block you.

Apology accepted. What I'm saying is that a core tenant of this theory has been disproven by genetics. Further genetic research has shown us that there are distinct differences between us and some of the ancestors incorrectly attributed to us. By disproving Darwins belief in pangenesis with hard science, Mendel's laws also showed a huge flaw in the entire concept/structure.
Genetics does not rely on darwinian evolution models because they have been proven to be incorrect. I hope that helps...

But what I'm saying is that the theory of evolution isn't the same as it was when Darwin came up with it. It is has been changed to account for what we know about genetics and is the basis of all biology. It is the most pervasive and complete theory we have.

I am listening and I am hearing you loud and clear. Your characterization of Darwin's theory being based incorrectly on pangenesis is correct, except that it was not insignificant. In fact it is so significant that it calls the entire theory into question. Pangenesis was one of Darwin's tenant beliefs, without it much of the rest of his theory falls apart. As you stated it was proven later to be invalid as have many of Darwin's other predictions. Darwin's theory appears to be in crisis.

Unified Theory of Evolution. Look it up, read a goddamn book on evolution that wasn't written by Darwin and see what we've learned since then. Evolution began with Darwin but it certainly doesn't end there. Darwin's theory may be in crisis but the theory of evolution as we understand it today is alive and well and kicking creationist arse.

It would seem to me that the crazy thing is to continue to support an idea that has been proven incorrect. Darwins ideas were based on pangenesis which as you stated, was discredited by Mendels work. Why would anyone continue to support an idea that has already been disproven?

Because the fact is that it's not the pangenesis part of evolution that is important. It's the adaptation through natural selection. No one is supporting pangenesis this day because it has been proven wrong but evolution itself has not only been proven right but makes far more sense hwen Mendels work is applied to it.

Mendel disagreed with Darwin's theory. He read Origin of Species and commented on it, he disagreed with pangenesis and shared his thoughts about it with others. The neo-darwinist movement could not prove pangenesis so they adopted Mendelian Laws as a substitute, however these laws have never been able to conclusively prove evolution, thus it remains a theory.

No, Mendel's work provided the answer that had alluded Darwin during his lifetime. It provided a model for inheritance and adaptation. Evolution is a theory yes but you're using the layman's definiton, not the scientific one.
