@CRHurley Actually I believe I do hear some dirt, even if you think there isn't. even a corps as good as this has dirt *gasp - nobody is perfect
for instance, people were cracking in the trumpets, and in the section around 1:00 there was a trumpet falling behind the ensemble, sounded like a slow tongue, they are very very good especially for that point in the season
It's great when you actually can hear the tiniest little errors because that means they have gotton so clean that the smallest little mistake will stand out. This is when you know you are damn good. Outside of DCI, and even some corps, never get to this point so it makes it even more epic to see people perform at this level. :)
No. Crown sounds NOTHING like The Star of Indiana. There is nothing that sounds like the deep, dark, rich texture that Carolina Crown has "trademarked".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Was kidding....Star was way ahead of this corps. 4 National Brass Championships in just 8 years. Corwn 0 for 15 years. I do like the dancing man in the video.
The Dancing dude is the Matt Harloff, the Brass Captain. Awesome man. And i don't competely care about the awards. The organization sound of Carolina Crown is, was, and will be unmatched. As mentioned before, Deep, Dark, Rich sound.
Crown is no doubt becoming one of the best corps ever. They are easily one of my favorite corps now-a-days, more so than even the Cavies and the Cadets. That said, Star is among legends when it comes to their innovation, emotion, and power. Crown is good, but they are NOT Star, not yet at least.
Obviously, bariBOY, you are too young to hear Star on anything else but memorex. I have heard both, and yes, they are alike. Crown is an unbelievable corps and has one of the best hornlines in DCI today. But that said, could they still produce that sound on the 6 year old 2-valve G bugles that 90 Star did. I don't think so. Who probably was the instrumental part in turning Crowns hornline into what it is today, Donny van Doren, maybe? And what a coincidence, he was Stars Brass caption head. Huh!
Good point onfire. I've seen both live too and Donnie did such a great job in producing such great sound in the brass section. I played drums but would always go watch the Star's brass line practice. We'll never see anything like them again. Also, I remember the 1990 star, probably the best brass line in history. I believe they marched with 84 brass players and a small drum line. I hope Crown can get to that level.
Most likely they had an incredible run/show two nights prior. For staff it can be frustrating to see your hornline reach a higher level of performance, and then slack off shortly thereafter. It's a mental barrier every corps hits, and has to pass.
Just getting the performers to realize that the energy on the field is translating in the stands is a crucial point, and when it's passed the shows get so much better. That's when the corps is hooked, and keeps chasing that amazing feeling.
When you play you should always imagine your sound going out of the end of your horn and leaving your position. The sound when its produced will always travel.Microphones only catch the initial sound when it travels past it. Dynamic contrast is therefore is lost a slight bit. Listen to when the corps cuts off and how the sound seems to travel past their position.Dynamic contrast exists its just extremely hard to catch sometimes.Especially with the kind of decibels of sound that Crown's producing!
is it just me, or is not much change in volume in this video? I can tell there are volume changes in what they're actually playing, but it just doesn't sound like that maybe the camera isn't capturing the changes and records it as all one volume??
weird. we're playing this in wind ensemble and it's 7 measures of 2/4 and one of 3/4... its weird i know, but thats how its was written in the arrangement we have
The finishing statement of 1812 gives me goosebumps every time. You cats at finals gave every brass player in the local vicinity a fat goosey smile including me. Can't wait to see what you throw down next season.
Oh by the way...you all are THE BEST hornline in DCI as of last year...and this year topped it off!!! I thought you would take first in brass at finals cause you all rocked my socks and play awesome! And you have the BEST sound in DCI!!! you all and phantom are a tie! lol
I like how the contra on the very right of the screen is the only one doing transitions while marking time. Great show this year, and as a brass player myself, always great to hear that jaw-dropping hornline. I want to see them again live so badly. Come back to the west coast.
