  • Does anyone else hear "in their face" before the big hit at :45?

  • The music selection for this show was just plain amazing. Carolina Crown in general just picks amazing music for their shows.

  • Who disliked this vid? I want a name and address.

  • @dcfr3ak must've been a blue devils fan.

  • @rwcasian It was Spartacus

  • god that chord at 0:46 gives me freaking chills

  • 0:46 "In their facee!!"

  • Man...no holes at all in the sound! We could stagger breath like champs!

  • @dcfr3ak You're damn right we could.

  • I conducted this piece for Drum Major auditions at my highschool

  • chord at :57 = God speaking

  • my favorite part is 1:06 because the guy marching. pretty funny

  • 2:12 to the end is epic. Dude looks like he's conducting with four arms.

  • 1 person thinks blue devils are better

  • :49 !!! Gahhhhh

  • LOVE!

  • @CRHurley Actually I believe I do hear some dirt, even if you think there isn't. even a corps as good as this has dirt *gasp - nobody is perfect

for instance, people were cracking in the trumpets, and in the section around 1:00 there was a trumpet falling behind the ensemble, sounded like a slow tongue, they are very very good especially for that point in the season

  • how come they didnt continue the epic part at 2:24? thats the best frickin part

  • @jck1794 They don't want to waste their chops.

  • This has to be my favorite show ever.

The only show to make me want to try out for a corps one day.

  • jeeze i love the audio what is this recorded on?

  • Is the musical section at 1:18 Shostakovich's Festive Overture? If not, it sure sounds exactly like it?

  • @Guywhoisme Yes it is! My favorite part of this selection before the big push to the end!!

  • Wall of sound at 2:00

  • The last bit sounded like the final peice to I wanna say the Phantom's 92 show.

  • @TWBaltz thats cus it is. 1812 overture. It would be interesting to hear Phantoms line in this same scenario playing that. be good to compare.

  • Almost an English Brass Band sound to the beginning segment. Not many DC lines can boast that!! I wish more could!!

  • @rob33cherry That's Carolina Crown for ya

  • almost an English Brass Band sound to it. Not many DC hornlines can boast that!!! I wish more could.

  • I think the impact hit @ 0:47 could be one of the best.

  • Does anyone else hear "the planets" at 1:43

  • @cbrian4 Yea I'm pretty sure the Crossmen were performing at that moment while we were warming up.

  • @cbrian4 Its a bunch of different songs, like i heard some Bernstein in there too.

  • @Gwalka oh wait nevermind haha

  • 5 Stars for Epic Mark Time from Matt

  • is that lee bettis behind the drum major haha because his marking time is awesome

  • No, that's Matt Harloff! They kinda look a like from the back!

  • aside from the few cracks at the beginning, this is clean as piss.

  • Yep, and its fairly early on in the season...

  • @myshilohmy You have just created my new favorite figure of speech.

  • pretty much all the staff is from star dumbass

might explain why they look and sound like star

  • Because they're on Bbs?

    Seriously, STFU.

  • machinelike precision, through the roof intensity. that's why Crown is so good, and this shows it perfectly.

  • very good brass that year!

  • God damn.. That contra line is the BALLS!!

  • wow, I am really hearing the tiniest TINIEST little errors when i open my ears, but still this ensemble is EPIC

  • It's great when you actually can hear the tiniest little errors because that means they have gotton so clean that the smallest little mistake will stand out. This is when you know you are damn good. Outside of DCI, and even some corps, never get to this point so it makes it even more epic to see people perform at this level. :)

  • @chaosdude14 you dont hear shit

  • best brass arc ive ever heard

  • 1:40....i hear crossmen :)

  • Planet X FTW!! :)

  • Yes. :)

  • every release was like a pipe organ. I want to die listening to something like Carolina Crown's Glorious sound.

  • mmmmmm....tasty :)

  • I wish TSMS could play this (yes I am lying) They couldnt even if their lives depended on it

  • one of my close friends.. jordan is one of the contra players there!!! i absolutely loved that show and i am still a huge fan of crown!

  • contra sound at 1:55. mmmmmm

  • Gah, their cutoffs and attacks are perfect.

  • it's funny how the guy in back is conducting too....but other than that gooood

  • I absolutely love Crowns Sound.

  • that cut off at 2:18 gave me chills lol

  • 2:09 to the end.

    I love it...

Best hornline, improved drill in 09, just couldn't pass BD.

So close to my "Makes the top 5 in 08 and wins it in 09" prediction that I made in 07.

  • WOW!

I like how you can hear Crossmen's closer around 1:40

  • you are a nerd if you know that!

    :D

  • that conductor is crazy

  • Love the conducting/dancing going on in the beginning

  • Crown has the best hornline in DCI.

    Bottom line.

  • Couldn't agree more.

  • heard That.

  • Debatable. Phantom and Crown are usually really close.

This year was an exception. Phantom's brass was considerably the weakest it's been in YEARS. Crown definitely had the best hornline of 2009.

  • Honestly, I really enjoyed Phantom's show more than the Blue Devils' show this year. But you're right, they were pretty weak. The show had potential.

  • I love Matt's passion, just like in 93 with Star

  • amazing dinamics

  • was the end 1812 overture??? i was getting into it then it stopped :(

  • how old is crown? they're one of the newer corps aren't they? they've got such a great wall of sound

  • this year is there 20th anniversary

  • i think they came on the scene in '89. same year as Magic of Orlando did.

  • really good phrasing

  • i watched crown 2 days ago and they blew me the hell away!

  • Crown sounds a lot like The Star Of Indiana....nice brass sound

  • No. Crown sounds NOTHING like The Star of Indiana. There is nothing that sounds like the deep, dark, rich texture that Carolina Crown has "trademarked".

  • Comment removed

  • The Dancing dude is the Matt Harloff, the Brass Captain. Awesome man. And i don't competely care about the awards. The organization sound of Carolina Crown is, was, and will be unmatched. As mentioned before, Deep, Dark, Rich sound.

  • Crown is no doubt becoming one of the best corps ever. They are easily one of my favorite corps now-a-days, more so than even the Cavies and the Cadets. That said, Star is among legends when it comes to their innovation, emotion, and power. Crown is good, but they are NOT Star, not yet at least.

  • Obviously, bariBOY, you are too young to hear Star on anything else but memorex. I have heard both, and yes, they are alike. Crown is an unbelievable corps and has one of the best hornlines in DCI today. But that said, could they still produce that sound on the 6 year old 2-valve G bugles that 90 Star did. I don't think so. Who probably was the instrumental part in turning Crowns hornline into what it is today, Donny van Doren, maybe? And what a coincidence, he was Stars Brass caption head. Huh!

  • Donie Van Doren is a brilliant mind!

AEvery word he spoke to us on the Crown 08 hornline was something that would help us progress. The man is a musical saint!

  • and also their brass head Matt Harloff is a Star alum and former head drum major also helps

  • Good point onfire. I've seen both live too and Donnie did such a great job in producing such great sound in the brass section. I played drums but would always go watch the Star's brass line practice. We'll never see anything like them again. Also, I remember the 1990 star, probably the best brass line in history. I believe they marched with 84 brass players and a small drum line. I hope Crown can get to that level.

  • i got to agree with baritoneboy159 Crowns sound is unmatched. Those stupid awards mean nothing! Crown easily has one of the best hornlines in DCI!

  • There just isn't enough speaker for this horn line!!!

  • what does that mean??

  • Most likely they had an incredible run/show two nights prior. For staff it can be frustrating to see your hornline reach a higher level of performance, and then slack off shortly thereafter. It's a mental barrier every corps hits, and has to pass.

Just getting the performers to realize that the energy on the field is translating in the stands is a crucial point, and when it's passed the shows get so much better. That's when the corps is hooked, and keeps chasing that amazing feeling.

  • He's referring to Crown beating the Cadets for the first time in corps history.

  • wow at 0:47 they gave me goosebumps that were like 5 inches high and chills down my spine!!!!!!

    awesome sounds!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • tonights show was not a what??

  • two nights ago was not a fluke

  • Oh wait, rtx2512 was right. =] 6 measures of 2/4, one of 3/4 and one of 2/4. =P

  • The pit at this part mixxed with this sounds so freakin awesome. I cried when I heard them play this in person.

  • cant wait till i audition next year!

  • When you play you should always imagine your sound going out of the end of your horn and leaving your position. The sound when its produced will always travel.Microphones only catch the initial sound when it travels past it. Dynamic contrast is therefore is lost a slight bit. Listen to when the corps cuts off and how the sound seems to travel past their position.Dynamic contrast exists its just extremely hard to catch sometimes.Especially with the kind of decibels of sound that Crown's producing!

  • God DAMN!! 1:55

  • Should've seen it in person!!! i was at that one, but i saw them in San Antonio.. I teared up a bit during their show

  • I was at San Antone as well. Great show, great performance. Can't wait to see them in 3 months!!! And Phantom and the other corps!!!

  • is it just me, or is not much change in volume in this video? I can tell there are volume changes in what they're actually playing, but it just doesn't sound like that maybe the camera isn't capturing the changes and records it as all one volume??

  • yeah i noticed that too.. it can be two things

    1) crown plays so loud that it does not register the full sound

actually that's the only excuse i can think of xD

  • This is sexy.

  • Haha..."In their face!" at 0:46.

  • I would absolutely LOVE to have been on THAT contra line.

  • I went nuts watching them in San Antonio in 08..

  • As did I

  • me too my friend.

but i was so tired from the exhausting day, i didnt quite appreciate this as much as i do know! lol

    but still...good show..

  • kill it crown.

what time signature is this in? it changes throughout right?

  • its in 3/3

  • 3/3? you mean 3/4...

and i don't think the whole section before the first impact is all in 3/4...

  • alec its 4 measures of 3/4 and then 1 measure of 5/4 =]

  • It's actually 7 measures of 2/4 and one of 3/4. =]

  • Comment removed

  • naw, that makes no sense lol

  • Yeah, it should be five measures of 3/4 and one of 2/4, but yes, it is what I said, because I have the music and we're playing it.

  • weird. we're playing this in wind ensemble and it's 7 measures of 2/4 and one of 3/4... its weird i know, but thats how its was written in the arrangement we have

  • watching van doren on the vid, he does 4 measures of 3/4, and then a 5/4 split with the emphasis on 4 =]

  • van doren's now officially on my list of favorite DMs.

most of that list is populated by Phantom DMs, which puts him in good company.

  • is Will Pitts on there?

  • he is on that list..... as are Joe Bielik, Darian Sanders, Kristy Spears, and most recently, Koji Mori.

  • 3/3???

  • yea i counted wrong and it does change a bit

  • But you cant have 3 as a bottom number? 3 can be on the top. did you mean 3/4?

  • yea i think it's 3/4 and alternates between 4/4 or 2/4..something like that?

  • Yeah, i was like. you cant have 3 as a bottom number, there is no such thing..

  • It goes back and forth from 3/4 to 2/4

  • he could be right...3 beats in a measure and the dotted half would get the beat... ;)

  • lol, yes it will be, im still trying out but we know the first 6 mins of the show already...and its amazing

  • What is their 2009 show called and what music is being played?

  • You won't know for a while... but I can tell you its good

  • the show is gonna be called

    "the grass is always greener"

    its on the Crown site

  • of all the returning corps I am most eagerly awaiting the 2009 edition of Carolina Crown.. It's going to be something special

  • Oh you have no Idea!

  • Awesome!!

  • whats the opener called?

  • overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein

  • thx

  • :45 "In There Face!"

    Gotta Love it!

  • it's gotta be a plesure to lose to crown over anyone else......

  • The finishing statement of 1812 gives me goosebumps every time. You cats at finals gave every brass player in the local vicinity a fat goosey smile including me. Can't wait to see what you throw down next season.

  • that drum major almost broke through the podium during the shows. I saw it at every regional. One energetic dm.

  • HAHA

How could he not be standing in front of that monster all summer!!!

  • i love the director. you can tell he loves every minute of the summer.

  • I like how in the beginning it kind of looks like Matt Harloff is dancing to the music, haha.

  • Great sound quality. Thanks for uploading!

  • :48 lol BAHHHH

  • Oh by the way...you all are THE BEST hornline in DCI as of last year...and this year topped it off!!! I thought you would take first in brass at finals cause you all rocked my socks and play awesome! And you have the BEST sound in DCI!!! you all and phantom are a tie! lol

  • Your camera has great sound quality. Thanks for uploading :)

  • Is that Shostakovich's festive overture at 1:20?

  • yeah

  • Yes

  • love the tuba line

  • Hopefully they keep improving.

My favorite corps is the Blue Devils but I really hope its not a BlueCoats kinda deal where they make 4th and then get 7th.

    They are really just fantastic.

    Very awesome and unique show.

  • You have to remember though that when BlueCoats made 7th in 2007, they were less than a point away from making 4th.

  • Very true

  • At about 150 you can hear bones in the backround

    Awesome.

  • Is that Joe Patawan dancing? What an awesome guy. Crown was amazing this year. Can't wait to see what they in store for next year!

  • That's Matt Harloff

  • I like how the contra on the very right of the screen is the only one doing transitions while marking time. Great show this year, and as a brass player myself, always great to hear that jaw-dropping hornline. I want to see them again live so badly. Come back to the west coast.

  • Same here. Finis was my fave of 2008. Amazing hornline!

  • such a fat sound

  • muahaha i played that!

    Armenian dances!

  • I can't help but laugh at the man in the black.....

  • ahh Candide is my favorite part of the show, especially the very beginning. Finis has definitely been my favorite show in a few years.
