Broken Magnum/Phantom is a homage to the traditional rocket punch of Mazinger Z/Great Mazinger in the 70's.

The original Gaiking shares its roots with these robots, as well.

GaoGaiGar's Broken Magnum and Broken Phantom aren't homages to Mazinger Z any more than any rocket punch is. They're direct homages, however, to Japan's Kamen Rider franchise, and were two attacks by the same name of one of the franchise's titular heroes.

But in the same manner, all Super Robots can trace their lineage to Mazinger Z, which itself is inspired by the likes of Tetsujin-28. The original Gaiking was completely different from the remake, which is more of a re-imagining.

dude ... i realy REALY love "daiku mariu gaiking", and i see this anime when i was onli 8 years in chile mi country (1988), here we called "el gladiador". bro... that was amasing !!! . gaiking its my faborite mecha in my entire life, but this "gaiking the leyend of daiku mariu" its realy a bad copy and totali carent of sence and, sorry whit mi english... because i speak spanish

@Gundamknight100 If you want to enjoy remakes you shouldn't compare them to the original or you will just get a case of whiny fan boy bitching syndrome. And there are already too many in other mecha fanbases out there. (I'm talking about you UC purists) If you don't like it don't watch and if you think its stupid just make an abridged series to make your point. It worked for LittleKuriboh after all...
