  • I'd sell my soul to be able to perform this.

  • adaptation of a such bad taste, sorry...

  • I would have been that one person who annoys everyone else by standing and clapping like a maniac while catcalling and whistling. Well, if I could whistle, I mean. But you get what I'm trying to say.

  • Bad piano. He deserves a better one.

  • As incredible as this is, I love the original orchestral Danse Macabre too much to enjoy this as thoroughly as I ought to - I wish it'd kept closer to the original.

  • @mushroomartist I totally agree

  • Incredible. I envy you so much!

  • mesmerizing, wonderful! i loved it.

  • Fantastic Performance!

The Piano is dead in sound! Terrible piano!

  • i prefeer original Horowitz got to figured fancy

  • This must be the best interpretation of this on youtube

  • Where is the I-love-it-so-hard-I-play-it-over-and-over-again-and-sing-it-to-myself-constantly-and-I-would-die-to-be-able-to-play-like-that button??!!!???!!??

  • @sweetnessglyc

you wouldnt be able to play it if you were dead, true story ;)

  • I love the Fugue at 3'10" to 3'37": amazing counterpoint!

  • Zamechatelno!!! The best!!!

  • BRAVO!

  • This is a magnificent piano piece and very well interpreted.

  • the guy's quite good, almost as good as Yuja Wang at Pleyel this week !

  • Justin Bieber rated this video 24 times.

  • @Alexias030692: Please, I don't want his name in this video. Or in any video with good music.

  • I can tell the 24 that applaused saw the video and didn't like it

  • This is AMAZING JOB, Sandro!!!

  • curse you audience

  • This is amazing!

  • Tecnicamente impecavel...parabens.

  • It is NOT BY VLADIMIR HOROWITZ!!!!!! The Transcription was by FRANZ LIZST!! TOOL!

  • @sebt899 actually my friend this is the horowitz version, the liszt has a much different beginning i prefer liszt though :( nobody ever does liszts :( good performance anyway :o

  • @iamcoveredingravy actually he says its the Horowitz version, the confusion is gained from the fact that Horowitz worked on the Liszt transcript, rather than starting from scratch. And for my taste this transcript is far superior.

  • Astounding

  • he should be playing in front of 100,000 people!

  • Hello Sandro,

I live the way you play. What a wonderful performer you are. I am just wondering where and when you will be performing in San Rafael, Marin County? Please let me know asap so I can arrange to have my friends to see you. I am a very good friend of Shining Sung from New York.

  • AMAZING!

  • wunderful

  • Genius!!

  • HEs great......no more words can't find any.

  • Wow this is friggin crazy. My favorite part: 2:15

  • Eyes glued to screen? Check. Volume increased to hear every delicious note in greater clarity? Check. Chills down spine? Hell yes, check.

Brb looking for the sheet music. *u*

  • OMmgggg I lovee!!!

  • my speakers started buzzing!

  • I loved playing this in orchestra in high school... it brings back memories, and a string ensemble sounds more creepy and less playful (like this).

  • Wonderful! Horowitz is one of my all time favorite pianists and I did not know he had down a transcription of this piece. Sandro's playing was magnificent.

  • I wish the audience wasn't in the shot.

  • There was nowhere near enough applause for that.

  • @cyberott They were too stunned by the raw power of that amazing performance to be able to applaud properly.

  • I LOVE YOU!!

  • Such a treat! I watched this more than a year ago and now I come back to watch it again and I must say, I 'm still struck in awe.....the rhythmic and percussive notes gave me goose pimples....and I really like the ending!!!

  • This was one of my favorite pieces 20 or 30 years ago, nice piece and well played.

  • great great job 5/5

  • much impressed by this good musician with a brillant technique in best liszt tradition. to give this piece more of its character a bit of brutality dans certains parts is missing compared with the composers interpretation. Its a lifestyle behind that. But difficult to explain.... anyway a great performance, thanks....

  • Finally a Piano version of this piece that captures it's essence; frantic, morbid, insane. Not to sound racist here but every time I see one of the Asians play this piece (many here on youtube), they lack soul.

  • he looks and plays lik e glenn gould!

  • Amazing, that passion, that virtuosity, that unison between the pianist and the music he performs... A masterful performance of one of Saint-Saëns great masterpieces! Kudos, mister Russo!

  • That was fabulous. And not merely a virtuosic performance, that was MUSIC of the highest quality too. Congratulations!

  • Many Thanks to Terry I found this FANTASTIC performance of the great pianist and musican Sundro Russo!

    Stars, stars, so many stars!!!

  • A great and outstanding performance!

You are one of the greatest IMO! I´m enthused!

  • This is so briljant!! I love this piece from the start I began to love Classical music. It had such power! Thank you for this great performance Sanrus and thanks to Terry for sending this to me.

  • Thank you very much for 9 precious minutes this morning, filled with your outstanding skills...

    kind regards,

    Lilly

  • This is brilliant playing -Bravo!

  • Colin, I see that our friend Khwan was here one year ago -- expressing herself so emphatically yet elegantly!

  • Yes, I saw her here! She sure knows her stuff!

  • Sandro, this is the rendition I've been waiting for all my life! Truly outstanding. What a privilege to have this for our enjoyment on YouTube. Best wishes from Florida,

    ~Terry

  • Hi dear Terry! Nice to find you here?:):): Thank you for sharing this beautiful video!

  • Franco, I received a gracious note in response to a message to this amazing artist, and I assured Sandro

I was calling it to the attention of the fine pianists and

directors I'm privileged to know. Thank you for your comment, as always! ~Terry

  • This is an OUTSTANDING musician!!! Thank you Terry!

  • Thank you for another beautiful and stunning "dragging"!

  • what an undertaking! congrats!!

  • i hope make this on my eight strings guitar with tapping technique!!

    wonderfull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1.are we breaking rules 1&2?

    2.point 1 is irrelevant

3.the opening of both camille saint saens danse macabre and franz liszts mephisto waltz no.1 are meant to represent the devil and death "tuning their fiddles" in tritone. seeing as death and satan are, in many cultures and religions, interchangeable, it stands to reason that death plays the fiddle.

also, this is an incredible pianist, and, while he's no horowitz, he's close enough to grab my attention.

    bravo

  • =/

looks like this was all for naught

I've never heard of death playing the flute. I've heard of him playing the fiddle,as is evident by not only the danse macabre but also the first mephisto waltz, and at times the piano, but never the flute.

TL;DR: pics/sources or it didnt happen

  • i simply can't see your logic

care to explain or perhaps give your source?

  • everyone knows death plays the fiddle

    and the occasional piano

  • vedo con piacere che i geni esistono ancora!

  • who is this guy and why isn't he more famous?

  • No, just being a dick...sorry :(

I giggled when I read your comment, looked at the audience, and saw a bunch of old people.

    I'm high.

    Always bring a towel.

  • Cuz they mad old right?

  • I am also playing this song, though not at his level. I acknowledge his superiority

  • Word's cannot describe nor do justice to his skill

  • Superb job Sandro! Bravíssimo !!! (piano is not Steinway, is three diapasons hause)Congratulations Yamaha!

  • this man really feels the music

  • proudly commented by italian: porco dio!!!

  • i still can't deceide weather to learn either horowitz's transcription or liszts... their both amazing!

  • learn a horowitz transcription of a liszt transcription XD

  • Only one word can describe this:

    AMAZING.

  • Absoloutely fantastic performance. The thing that always seems so difficult to me in this piece is maintaining such control over all the staccato runs. That guy must be a pro, surely.

Personally I think Horowitz's trasncription is a little too ornate in parts, but it's an incredible work nonetheless.

  • that weak applause for such a godly performance?! I curse them

  • wow. i'm playing this in my school band but our quality doesn't compare, not one bit!

  • he also seems a bit unreal

  • Just in time to get me in the mood for Halloween =) Great job!

  • Awesome. There is a lot of feeling in this.

  • Extraordinary! Bravo!

  • copada la musica esaaaa

  • Holy Christ Almighty. This stole my breath away. Very sound control and beautiful rubato.

  • Bravo!! c'est excellant! j'adore cette pièce et j'ai eu la chance de la jouer au camp musical version 2 pianos. Elle est très difficile. Bravo!

  • Replying percussionist624: An excerpt of the main theme was used in a Mickey Mouse cartoon. :P

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

  • I'm a big fan of clarity myself. Yet somehow in this particular piece, I think it adds to the dramatic effects to blur things up a bit. Russo's musical phrases are virtusously clear, but that's almost a shame.

  • AHAHAHAHAHA DIZ LEGENDARY ZTYLEE!!!

  • Wow, sounds fantastic, i love this song!

  • why does the main theme sound so familiar, I could've sworn I heard it before. Is this an arrangement of another piece?

  • It's an arrangement of Danse Macabre from Saint-Saëns, which is not made for the piano.

  • Its also used as the theme tune to a tv series of Agatha Christies Miss Marple. I think.

  • Jonathan Creek

  • big technique, very well played!

  • Very impressive indeed. Bravo!

  • fantastic performance, spine-chillingly beautiful :D

  • I've listened 2 version of the version of Horowitz and a part the virtuosism I prefer the original or the Liszt version!

The virtuosism is not always best musically!

  • I heard this piece at Mr. Russo's recital, it was even better in person. Bravo!

  • He's really good in playing, Darling, indeed!!!

  • great playing!!

  • i always liked this piece by Saint-Saens in the orchestral version, but this sounds just as good or better on the piano. great work either way

  • This was SO beautifully played! :) Can't get enough of it!

  • isn't it magical the way you encourage all those acoustics resonate to resonate after you do some clearing with the pedal at the end...is there some silent holding down of notes so the open vibrating strings trigger all the other acoustics related to those notes ? What ever it was, they are uniquely beautiful musical moments.

  • "Terrific! Played with intense passion! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing musical talents. I enjoyed every nuance." -- Couldn't be said better!

  • Brilliant

  • Terrific! Played with intense passion! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing musical talents. I enjoyed every nuance. JAC

  • I had to come back to listen to this again but I'm still so struck with wonder, the way you paint sounds with your fingers and mix with them with the pedal towards the end and let the harmonics vibrate... then suddenly run down the keyboard as always with perfect clarity and precision .... it's tremendous.

  • It's one of those dream pieces, being able to play is a privilege is given to very few. Out of those few who can you are the undoubted the master. You play it as if you were born to play it, as if it was written for your fingers and nothing could be more natural, such power and assurance, singing melodies and tremendous driving pointed percussive rhythms, pedal effects towards the end like a watercolour.

  • I sent this to all my pianist friends -- incl Paul of course

and whoa, your writing was as beautiful here as it was impassioned! Beautiful thoughout! ~Terry

  • Thank you very much Terry.

    It was a brilliant performance.

    Best wishes,

    Judyesther
