I would have been that one person who annoys everyone else by standing and clapping like a maniac while catcalling and whistling. Well, if I could whistle, I mean. But you get what I'm trying to say.
As incredible as this is, I love the original orchestral Danse Macabre too much to enjoy this as thoroughly as I ought to - I wish it'd kept closer to the original.
Where is the I-love-it-so-hard-I-play-it-over-and-over-again-and-sing-it-to-myself-constantly-and-I-would-die-to-be-able-to-play-like-that button??!!!???!!??
@sebt899 actually my friend this is the horowitz version, the liszt has a much different beginning i prefer liszt though :( nobody ever does liszts :( good performance anyway :o
@iamcoveredingravy actually he says its the Horowitz version, the confusion is gained from the fact that Horowitz worked on the Liszt transcript, rather than starting from scratch. And for my taste this transcript is far superior.
I live the way you play. What a wonderful performer you are. I am just wondering where and when you will be performing in San Rafael, Marin County? Please let me know asap so I can arrange to have my friends to see you. I am a very good friend of Shining Sung from New York.
Wonderful! Horowitz is one of my all time favorite pianists and I did not know he had down a transcription of this piece. Sandro's playing was magnificent.
Such a treat! I watched this more than a year ago and now I come back to watch it again and I must say, I 'm still struck in awe.....the rhythmic and percussive notes gave me goose pimples....and I really like the ending!!!
much impressed by this good musician with a brillant technique in best liszt tradition. to give this piece more of its character a bit of brutality dans certains parts is missing compared with the composers interpretation. Its a lifestyle behind that. But difficult to explain.... anyway a great performance, thanks....
Finally a Piano version of this piece that captures it's essence; frantic, morbid, insane. Not to sound racist here but every time I see one of the Asians play this piece (many here on youtube), they lack soul.
Amazing, that passion, that virtuosity, that unison between the pianist and the music he performs... A masterful performance of one of Saint-Saëns great masterpieces! Kudos, mister Russo!
This is so briljant!! I love this piece from the start I began to love Classical music. It had such power! Thank you for this great performance Sanrus and thanks to Terry for sending this to me.
Sandro, this is the rendition I've been waiting for all my life! Truly outstanding. What a privilege to have this for our enjoyment on YouTube. Best wishes from Florida,
3.the opening of both camille saint saens danse macabre and franz liszts mephisto waltz no.1 are meant to represent the devil and death "tuning their fiddles" in tritone. seeing as death and satan are, in many cultures and religions, interchangeable, it stands to reason that death plays the fiddle.
also, this is an incredible pianist, and, while he's no horowitz, he's close enough to grab my attention.
I've never heard of death playing the flute. I've heard of him playing the fiddle,as is evident by not only the danse macabre but also the first mephisto waltz, and at times the piano, but never the flute.
Absoloutely fantastic performance. The thing that always seems so difficult to me in this piece is maintaining such control over all the staccato runs. That guy must be a pro, surely.
Personally I think Horowitz's trasncription is a little too ornate in parts, but it's an incredible work nonetheless.
I'm a big fan of clarity myself. Yet somehow in this particular piece, I think it adds to the dramatic effects to blur things up a bit. Russo's musical phrases are virtusously clear, but that's almost a shame.
isn't it magical the way you encourage all those acoustics resonate to resonate after you do some clearing with the pedal at the end...is there some silent holding down of notes so the open vibrating strings trigger all the other acoustics related to those notes ? What ever it was, they are uniquely beautiful musical moments.
"Terrific! Played with intense passion! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing musical talents. I enjoyed every nuance." -- Couldn't be said better!

I'd sell my soul to be able to perform this.

It's an arrangement of Danse Macabre from Saint-Saëns, which is not made for the piano.
