  • This song puts you out in the plains, drinking liquor at sundown next to your chuckwagon and your 200 head of cattle.

  • Beautiful tribute. Utah was a great man and is sorely missed.

  • Very beautiful rendition. One of my favorite songs.

  • Sir C- thanks for listening and sending the encouraging words. Very much appreciated. willy

  • A fine rendition Willy, just the right feeling.

Utah was one of my heroes, hard thing that he's gone but of course his songs will live on. You do him proud with this one. I'd love to hear you do any others of his that might be in your song bag.

    Thanks,

    Neil

  • Neil.. you pick your heroes well! I was able to see Utah and hold that dear in my memories. Great Man, Great American, Great World Person. I will dig out some more songs. Thanks very much for your comments. And yes, his songs will live on!

  • Utah meant the world to us. We're no one. Just a couple of folks from nowhere, really. But we loved Utah, and he helped us out of a lot of hard times with his songs, and we just want to thank you for giving him such a heartfelt tribute. Awesome job, man.

  • "We're no one. Just a couple of folks from nowhere, really. "

I have to disagree. Anyone who knows and loves Utah's music is someone special in my book! Thanks for the nice words. I'm very happy you like my rendition of his wonderful song.

  • Very nice indeed! I've loved this song ever since I learned it from Roz Brown over here in Australia ages ago.

I didn't know Utah Phillips had died; I'm sorry I never saw him.

Love your style, voice and guitar; you don't overwhelm the words as so many people do.

You've got a new fan near Canberra, Australia!

  • Thanks, deeply! Yes we lost a treasure when Utah passed. But I don't know of anyone who live life as full as Bruce Phillips. One helluva man indeed!

It really means a lot to me that you like my version. the song carries most of the weight- truly a beautiful tune. Hello Canberra from Pinckney, Michigan!

  • This is a really beautiful song!

I first heard Tom Waits perform this song live on an old recording (Ebbets Field 1974).

This is a great version! Beautiful work.

  • Thanks! You do a very nice job with the song. I saw Utah Phillips perform it a couple of times and do miss him. I recently saw Jack Hardy and David Massgengil perform in it concert.

  • Thanks very much. forgive me for not getting back earlier on this... I forgot to check it.

  • Very nice Willy! I enjoyed this very much and sincerely thankful for finding you on this web. Just some good old down to earth music, like the ones I use to hear when I was growing up. My parents were always listening to folk music, probably explains my love for it. Mark

  • Thanks Mark! Again & again... : )

    willy

  • I'm not familiar with Phillips' work, so I can't comment on his life or passing, but I like this song, and I like the way you do it -you always seem put something of yourself into the covers you perform - great job as usual. Jim

  • Jim-

You should get some of Utah's CDs. Some of his later ones Time Didn't Go Anywhere) he only talks and it's great! He's hilarious and very somber and thoughful- GREAT man, huge legacy!
