This is GOLD! :) It always amazes me how, even years later, the actors in Sondheim productions still have these characters inside of them and when together, the chemistry remains. GOLD!
One of the big themes in all of Sondheim's work is the way that relationships change over time. It's just wonderful to see that this one is still very much alive.
Thanks for posting !!! I have tried finding a video of Chip and Joanna singing this song but I can't find the original from the production, so a huge thanks because I love this song and they are so perfect, such emotion and love shows in both of them.
@JShex No, don't think there's any triplet figure. Seems as though he's playing what is a harp figure on the original recording. The harp seems to only have straight quarter notes at that moment. If the pianist seems slightly rocky in his playing at that spot, just look at the video and you'll notice he has a page-turn right at that moment. Self-executed page-turns, as any pianist can attest, can be deadly for one's physical and mental stability.
what is so amazing is that this is a sondheim "diddy." this isn't a showstopping number, and yet it is absolutely brilliant. it is so much deeper than just a song about the journey of the characters.
I bought the dvd mainly because I wanted to watch them do this again. I love them, they're so cute! I always have the biggest smile on my face when I see this :)
Wow, first comment. I'm watching the concert on tv now. This was always my favorite song from into the woods, and I can't believe how much they sound sound the same. It's like the original show was yesterday. They're amazing. Thanks for posting.

they did this nearly 25 years ago for the first time and they sound identical--as if nothing has changed at all--how ironic

I think the piano makes a mistake at about :30-:33
I am pretty sure the piano has a triplet figure, which the player starts but it sounds as if he makes a mistake and doesn't finish it up.

Can you imagine how trippy this was for them? You can just tell by the look on Joanna's face that all those memories were just FLOODING back in.

Thank you for uploading this.
I don't know how it's possible, but they are cuter now than they were when they originally did this nearly 25 years ago.

@lttlpeppy Where did you get the dvd? All I could find was an earlier Sondheim celebration at Carnegie Hall.
