@NikkoCharger - a 3 mil loss is nothing for a company that large. A small hit, if as much. Robotics in general is hyper expensive however, especially when you are trying to keep up with the competition. Still, I wish they hadn't canceled him. People rave about Asimo but I think Qrio was always more advanced as it wasn't remote controlled and actually moved with great fluidity by the time it was disconnected. Asimo never struck me as spectacular, counter to Qrio whom I thought was fantastic

Sony stopped making them because their profits plummeted with PS3/XBox war, BluRay/HDDVD war, music downloads cutting into their record label, and movie piracy cutting into their studio.

They wisely stopped investing in the future and concentrated on now.

Honda haven't had such issues and as you say will pioneer the market.

QRio is expensive to buy and not everyone would really buy them although everyone said "its cute, i love to have one". but reality sucks and the pain kicks in when no sales for QRio and the R&D expenses is getting more expensive. So, when a product cannot be sold, its consider as a bad product. Sony is just taking the most realistic measurements.

I too hate that QRio is stopped developing.

Well, those are fictional, and they are okay with fictional animals, but if they were to be made into real creatures, people would freak out. Hollywood is a source of the paranoia, I agree, but it isn't the only source. Why is this paranoia around? If people even knew how robots work, they would know that they couldn't kill unless a human programmer wanted them to. I firmly believe in the thought of really knowing about it before you go against it.

This made me hate Sony even more than I did before. Why did they quit? Besides, robots, if programmed not to, will not intentionally kill a human being. Give it a gun, and it doesn't know what it does. It pulls the trigger and kills a person, it knows not to next time. If something is put in the programming limiting the coding to non-harming code, they HAVE to follow it. They can add, but they can't subtract from it. As a programmer I can assure all people that is impossible.

Sony didn't stop the project because people were afraid Qrio would pick up guns and shoot people. Qrio can't kill any more than a Tamagotchi can. Qrio is an extremely expensive toy, nothing more.

Sony are doing badly financially and they had to kill their robotics division as hardly anyone could afford those products, coupled with the fact that it was costing them way too much in R&D. Tragic really since no other competitor comes close.

I just thought that because people were stressing too much that it is getting us closer to the age where computers will kill us all, that SONY was getting overloaded by mail and email that they should "stop before its too late". I can believe the too expensive aspect, because of how SONY overprices everything. PSP was way too expensive, and every time its price would lower, they would add to keep the price at 200. The PS3 started at 650. Way too much to pay, so no-one could afford it.

Does anyone know how much Qrio would have cost? I mean, I've read about him. He's not just a toy for kids. I'd just like to have him around - I'd pay about $1,200 for him. If he's more than that, I'd be scraping and would think twice about buying him. From what I read, he's worth it IF he lived up to what Sony promoted. I mean, come on, PS3 is gonna be $600 and kids are already in the stores going nuts 'cause they're not on the shelves yet. I wouldn't buy a PS3, but I'd buy a Qrio.
