if there was "of state" at the end it would have been the law Hitler passed to be able to raid peoples houses at will and arrest people without a trial and being able to torture before court. Thank god the lyrics say it all, great song xD
@damnmyou you do realize alot of country is inspired by irish folk music and oral storytelling right? We country people are mostly of irish decent. (Georgia was founded as a buffer state to separate the English from the Spanish... they did this by bringing in Irish debters to work to pay off their debt as "servants"... our great great great great grandparents)
LOL might surprise some of you kids to know that we loved this song in the early 70s. And although have grown up & am now a Conservative (not a liberal bone) still love it & Kristofferson (who make no mistake is all American hero-on many levels).
I don't have too many regrets, but when I tossed that key away that you handed to me to enter the Hilton in Tucson...well...it was stupid! To walk away from you to return to a cheat...God...girls can be SO stupid!

The lyrics of this song are way too deep, profound, and trueful to ever be played on the radio.

As with many of the greatest songs. It takes years for people to realise just how good they are.
