KIRI IS NEW ZEALANDS ANGEL..IF ANGELS SING IN HEAVEN .KIRI WOULD BE IN THE FRONT ROW..HER VOICE IS DIVINE AND OF COURSE HER PHYSICAL BEAUTY IS UNEQUAL IN THE WORLD OF OPERA..
Se'm posa la pell de gallina quan escolto aquesta ària excelsa. La intensitat emocional que hi posa la Kiri te Kanawa només és cosa dels genis musicals, només ells poden assolir aquest nivell tan elevat. Romàntic nocturn.
For me, Kiri te Kanawa, Montserrat Caballe and the Young Leontyne Price (equally) sing the most beautiful, every note perfection, renditions of this aria.
I wish people posting video would make a note that says "video" or "a bunch of copyrighted, random photos tossed together over a soundtrack" before I commit to clicking on the link. Who doesn't love Te Kanawa? But I can hear a better recording of this song by going to my itunes. I know what her Christmas CD cover looks like!

Good madame Kanawa's version, but there's better ones, for example Angela Gheorghiu's interpretation, for me the best singer for this aria (even better than Callas)
I know she had a very long and popular career... and many adore her, but I just never "got it." I always found her singing boring. The tone is beautiful enough, but I just never really felt anything when she sang. Give me Leontyne.
@htshoward I don't think she is at all boring at all if you simply listen. I am biased as a huge Kiri fan, but her passion is in nuance- you won't get the histrionics of Fleming. Also, I would recommend listening to her Mozart ...it is unmatchable. I feel like Leontyne Price is a much better voice for Tosca but I don't think Kiri's rendition is boring, but "controlled". (to be honest I've never "gotten it" with Leontyne...it doesn't matter though, we've both been touched by each :-)
@saxamaphoneguy1 I have listened and listened again, but I still find it boring. You first state Leontyne's voice is a much better voice for Tosca but you don't "Get it" with her voice. However, as you point out, there is room for all of us here. I appreciate your comments.
i have never heard a sound sooo pure but at the same time so...distressed>>i feel her pain....though her voice is still to light for the piece...bravo!
I have a problem with Kiri's Tosca. She is not a Puccini soprano. Hers is a pure, lyric voice who's Mozart was amazing.. In the 80's, she was a lot like Renee Fleming - singing mainly lyric roles. Her Strauss, Baroque and French roles are lovely (Massenet's Manon, but not Manon Lescaut of Puccini, again Puccini heroines call for dramatic voices. Her voice is not big enough for Tosca. With some training, she might have been a fine Butterfly, but her Tosca is all wrong.
@MastersoftheOpera and who tells us what is right and wrong for each role? Though you may be used to a different type of voice singing Puccini roles, if a singer who does not fit the usual mold sings Puccini and is highly communicative in her roles (which I think Kiri is) and extremely expressive and maintains a beautiful tone quality and use of rhythm - why discount them? There is nothing wrong about her interpretation of Puccini roles.

I made the mistake of listening to Leontyne Prices' version before this one. Leontyne's version just ruined it for anyone else who ever tries to sing this song again!
When I clicked on this link, I thought 'oh no, a lyric soprano singing Tosca....this is going to be painful.' but then I heard her sing......WOW. AMAZING INTERPRETATION
My musical tastes run to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. I will, therefore, defer to the knowledge of those more versed in opera than I except to say that if this lady is having difficulty, I can't hear it. This is truly marvelous to my ear.
Kiri has a lush full open focused beautiful tone But we knew that . Some roles are better suited to every singer so if you take that out of equation you are left with the voice and how every tone from top to bottom has the same quality of sound Very few sopranos have or had this . When she's good she's fabulous When she sings a piece that fits that big voice, it is truly inspiring
I love Dame Kiri te Kanawa but this is not the role for her. I saw her sing this at the Met in the 80s and, visually she was absolutely stunning and believable. Vocally, it was apparent she had trouble with this role. There were dynamic moments, notes, phrases - after all she is one of the greatest singers ever - but this is not her role. Countess, Marschallin, lots of others, but not this one. I love you DKTK!
You must have heard her in concert at the Met because it is a known fact that she never has sung a full Puccini opera at the Met. She only did Tosca once and that was in Paris.
Bravissimo, this is equal or BETTER than Callas and no wonder: Kiri started her career by winning a New Zealand prize in 1965 aged 20/21 with this aria.
Check out the Norwegian soprano Sissel. She has an amazing voice and she is extremely talented. Her voice is crystalclear. And singers like Placido Domingo, Bryn Terfel and Jose Carreras loves her. Check out the videos of Sissel here on YouTube.
it's by far the best recorded version of this song .She sings it so beautifully with so much feeling and doesn't go overboard. It's simply exquisite! I've listened to so many versions ,Callas, Tebaldi, Dessi,Price, Sutherland. Kiri really brings some rare quality to it. You can hear the pain but her voice still remains beautiful even when she is expressing her great anguish, this is so terrifically hard to do! .. Divine
@xXxskayaxXx - If you like this song, you should also listen to VIRGINIA ZEANI 's interpretations, or ANGELA GHEORGHIU ' s interpretation. Virginia Zeani had one of the greatest voices of all times.
@xXxskayaxXx I know exactly what you mean. The other day I let a soundless fart to scape out me inside a full elevator, but little before it happened I was harming Nessum Dorma, pretending that such high class man like me would never do such thing, and the funny part was... everyone was looking at this fat woman holding a box of donuts. Is not easy to sing a very difficult aria and make sure the the emotions are coming deep inside you.
