First heard this on Radio Luxemburg, one of my desert Island discs, all their records were brilliant, at the time when they were forced to change their name to Birds Birds, fans referred to them as The English Birds, check out all the recordings on Decca and Reaction records, this was where the sixties started for me

@TEMPmichaelhansen thanks I was just wondering that. I like both bands Birds and Byrds for their own individual reasons of existance in the 60's but I do like birds better
They were a great band of their time, in some ways better than The Who in that they seemed to get the mix right when they did the early Motown stuff. RIP Kim indeed!
Lemmy has said on more than one occasion that the Birds are one of the very best live bands he ever saw. Motorhead's version of "Leaving Here" is a tribute to the Birds. There are many recorded versions of Motorhead playing this great Holland/Dozier/Holland song, but my favorite is the one on their "Golden Years" live EP.
this is the original version...was a minor hit in the UK, i played this to death when it was released these guys and the pretty things best thing in the UK in '65 The Birds were Ronnie Woods first band.
I first heard "The Rationals" version of this in the 80s on some old detroit nuggets album, followed by the who's version, then the beatles. Never knew there so many other awsome versions of this song floating around. gotta love youtube. thanks
The Velvet Underground have sold a whole lot of records, tapes, and CDs since the '60s. They are a mainstream act now. Same goes for The Ramones. They didn't sell much back in the day but now teenagers wear Ramones t-shirts. They are as mainstream as Madonna.
c'mon people! If you wanna really hear the essence of this song in it's purest form, ya gotta check out the ORIGINAL written and performed by Eddie Holland. This was done in 1963 when Motown was in it's early years but already they had that distinct sound thanks to the legendary Funk Brothers- the original Motown studio musicians. Wanna hear an r&b tune the way it's supposed to sound, ya take it to the source. All these other covers of this song are UNREASONABLE facsimiles at best...
Some cover versions are better than the originals. The Beatles doing the Isley Bros.' "Twist and Shout" for example. The Beatles made it into a rock and roll classic, while The Isley Bros.' version is barely remembered.
Moorlock, I believe that this more an issue of radio marketing and promotion. I wouldn't say that the Beatles version of "Twist and Shout " was "better" than The Isley Brothers, I'd say that the Beatles version was much more marketed and promoted better mostly because they WERE the Beatles. You see, in the world of radio in the 60's this was a reminent and direct result of "race records" in the 50's......
.....When the Isleys recorded it, it was played almost exclusively on the few black radio stations because white stations wouldn't play it. Sadly, that's just the way it was done back then. The white stations being in the majority, once they got a recording of the song by the Beatles marketed and promoted it to the max. Hell, they're the Beatles!...
....Therefore to the "majority" of the radio listeners the Beatles version is the classic. But hey, don't get me wrong, because I am one of the biggest Beatles afficianados that you will ever find. And what I know of my Beatles history I'm sure that THEY would give homage to the Isley's version because historically, Endland and other European countries have a much deeper of black American R and B and Jazz than white America ever has.....
yeah, some covers are great, but the isley bros are the best, and so is eddie holland on this one ; the covers by the birds are quite boring to me ; their 2 originals (no good without you & how can it be) are true killers
Great song! No wonder The Creation chose Ronnie Wood to replace Eddie Phillips -- his guitar sound here plasters you to the wall. Thanks for posting this.
