Richard has his own thing but he clearly has a mix of Lydon and Bowie going on in there and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Richard is still Richard besides ... all artists are influenced by other artists, putting your own spin on a thing is the key and Richard does this.
Richard admits to be influenced by Lydon and Bowie both..Just Like Bowie doesn't admit to being influenced by SCOTT WALKER...? Vocally I think he stands alone..The posture/stance is Rotten not the voice...and lets face it Bowie is way more operatic...singerly...This is a perfect mix which became his own...me thinks anyway..People always need to compare..it comes from fear...
Talk, Talk, Talk is a brilliant guitar record. Ashton & Ely got the cover of Guitar Player magazine , when the record came out in 80'. Pretty strange for a "New Wave" band . Buy it now, it's filled with great songs. This original lineup was definitely going places modern rock had never been. But it couldn't be sustained, Ely was out by Forever Now and the records after that are candy ass garbage.
@adater If he should be compared to some other artist, I'd compare Richard with David Bowie, not because of his voice (which is absolutely unique) but because of his attitude.
@adater There is similarity in the monotony of the vocals, but both bands are totally critical to the history of music, and completely different.
Don't diss the Pistols, they're monsters in the history of music, and blew the doors open for all the bands behind them. The Clash followed them and put out far more music that was far more complex, but Strummer quit his band and formed the Clash after he saw the Pistols.
Noone's ever touched the sound the Furs found. People are too conformist now.
@Simon4642 Aren't you clever? Using the song lyrics in your poorly scrawled snark. What an intellectual you are. We both like the Furs and that's good enough. I'm just not going to sit by when some asshat says the PIstols were nothing, because they started and popularized punk rock, and upended the music industry and threw the doors open to experimentation, including the Furs, who would never have had a record deal without the Pistols. Fuck Rolling Stone. Utter rag. Best brush up before applying
Wow, a bit to rough compared to the studio mix - great band, great song - but his voice sounds tired, as if he's over done it for a few weeks prior to this video... don't get me worng, LOVE this band...
MTV used to play the video for this song quite a lot in late '81 and early '82, and I remember being pretty blown away by it. MTV was actually kind of a valuable resource back then; you could hear music there that you couldn't hear anywhere else. Sure most of it was fairly ordinary, but one tune like this was worth ten of the rest.
@nri1969 I don't know which MTV you were watching, but the one I was watching would play the Furs or The Clash about once in a blue moon, and you had to sit through hours of garbage. Makes me shudder to think about what an utter waste of time television was, but thank god it's over. Love My Way did get a lot of play, and Pretty In Pink because they were in movies. 120 minutes was pretty good, though, and I used to tape it religiously. Ah, the days before craprap and boybands and Clear Channel.
Ilove the band too- but only the first 3 albums- after them they became very "middle of the road" and therefor boring-but the first three are outstanding records!
You summed it all up. I first heard tracks from Talk Talk Talk on the John Peel show in April 1981, and it all was very original and outstanding, albeit a car crash of lots of various bits and pieces. It held together as a cohesive sound cos they seemed so together as a band. Until about 1985. Middle of the road definitely sums up the horrid 1986 re-mix of Pretty in Pink. By then all was lost!
"Dumbwaiters" is one of the great achievements in any form of creative endeavor. Unparalleled. As I mentioned on one posts of the studio vid, a review once described it as "defying description by the English language".
It stands astride music like a twisted colossus. Amazing. I hope their next studio work will be as intelligently feral and outre as this. Go to it guys!
Very stoney...

Johnny Rotten comparison? Pathetic. This is music, not punk.

@alonewithduanebarry actually the furs are very much influenced by punk...post-punk.

@Rikitocker I bet you he was not trying to sound like anyone. His voice is about as real and original as you can get.

Ah wish I'd seen that original line up - caught em in 84 but half of em were session guys by then. Why did Morris / Kilburn / Ely split?

Yeah more like Bowie than Johnny Rotten. 100% Bowie clone.

I always thought he seemed a cross between Bowie and Rotten. Saw the band once and Richard Butler was
very charismatic.
