It saddens me that talent like this almost never makes it past YouTube.. Yet bullshit like lady gaga and Justin bieber have the most viewed videos... *sigh*
I tend to do them the way Steve Bailey does (check him out if you haven't already!), where you use your right hand index finger to cover the harmonic point and then pick with your middle finger.
Dude that was unbelievable, your finger work is so smooth and comfortable to you, i wish i could play that fluently. Can you give me an exercises to practice?
Also, I just uploaded a cover of this song and would appreciate it if you would look at it for me and give me some feedback, its my first song I tried to learn by ear.
Wow, Propilot1012! So you can't actually read dumbass? How in the hell could you miss the title? IT'S THE 1ST THING YOU SEE BEFORE CLICKING ON A VIDEO! DAMN, SOME PEOPLE ARE REALLY STUPID!
no i saw Forsaken and the bass guitar in the picture. After that i didnt bother reading the title. and then i guesst he was playing bass for the Eguitar. and i just ask, yeah it was stupid to ask before looking, but i highly dought i am stupid if i am a pilot. andthis is propilot1012 just on my bands account. SO FUCK OFF
The final note... I'm guessing that's an artificial harmonic.
I've been thinking about getting the John Myung signature bass and was just wondering how hard are 6-strings to play from the perspective of someone like me who's been playing only a 4-string for a year.
Yeah, the last note is an artificial harmonic. It's the D right above my highest fretted C :)
It's not really a question that anyone can answer for you. I think the best thing to do would be to go into a music store and play around with a bunch of different 6-string basses. See how you feel about them. Try out ones with different string spacings too. That makes one of the biggest differences in the feel of a 6-string bass. The Myung sigs have very narrow spacing. I prefer it wider myself.
good playing man! you have a really low action don't you?
i still have to take my bass to the shop to get it fixed, maybe you could take a look at my band. and comment on my bass work or something. Trip Trigger is like my more interesting bass playing.
What kind of picking technique for the arpeggios do you use?
I've been trying to learn this solo and Far beyond the sun and I can't get the sweeping motion down accurately enough , but it seems like you've got it nailed.
Thanks! I usually pick the lowest string with my thumb, then hammer on the minor 3rd (same string), then pick the 5th with my index finger on the next string, then the octave with my middle finger on the next string, then the minor 3rd with my ring finger on the next string, and then hammer on the 5th on the same string, and then tap the octave on the same string. Then you can pull-off and rake back down the arpeggio with the same finger you tapped with (index or middle for me). Hope that helps
Thanks. The bass was custom made by Chris Stambaugh - check out his website. He does great work! Don't have any tabs for you though, sorry. Just listen closely and you can figure it out :)
Apparently it didn't register my first response to this, so I'll just ask the question without the example. What about a 4 note pattern on one string? How do you plan on handling that?
I don't...I either do 321321 or 3212132121, or a combination of 2/3 fingers. I don't really think about it anymore, just happens naturally. Different patterns work better for different people. You can do 4-note patterns with 321321, just by placing emphasis on the downbeat with a different finger each time. Takes practice to get it down smoothly, but it works for some people. Steve Bailey does it that way. 3213 2132 1321 3213 and so on. I often do 3212 1321 3212 1321 etc.
You're pretty good for the amount of time playing. I hope to shoot for a similar result when I'm at that point chronologically. I've been playing for about 6.
Good job! I liked the arpeggio and the harmonic! Perfect... maybe you need some work on your alternate plucking (if im saying it right...) It's good though! Congratulations!
Yeah. I've seen you a lot since the Metallica forums..and on TalkBass too, and now on here. I've tried to transcribe a few guitar solos on my 5-string but just it always seems that I need the C-String in order to play any solo in the right octave. GBagley 2 years ago
It's quite a common practice to play the harmonics that way. If you watch "Edgar Cruz - Bohemian Rhapsody (classical guitar)" video, he also does it.
I also use my index finger to cover the harmonic, but I pick with my thumb. Seems easier not to miss the string.
