Way cool! Try giving them a boomerang shaped brush so they can see it better and set the canvas to the side. .^. oh yeah, and give them a choice of which brush color to use.
@frenchorcatrainer That would be some intense dedication. I can paint and draw with my feet fairly well. But again, some people don't have that option either.
@frenchorcatrainer Should get some of those pens or markers or whatever that you can use underwater and let it use them; it'd probably have a much better time of it then.
Since the dolphin needs to turn its head to actually see the page properly, a long brush with a right angle might be the thing? Or even bent back on itself a little, so the brush on page contact is directly in her view.
Wenn wir ohne Taucherbrille tauchen sehen wir nicht einmal die Hand vor den Augen scharf. Ähnlich wird es dem Delphin gehen. Der sieht auch nix ohne Brille :-)
sorry, but I couldn't see anything. The dolphin might not even be able to track the brush movement visually, as it's eyes are not really oriented forward(I don't think). It appeared as if the dolphin was periodically turning it's head aside to perhaps get a good view of the paper or canvas or whatever it is that the drawing is being done on.
Her neck angle is not for that box inclination, I also suggest an electromagnetic actuated brush, if the dolphin bites it with some strenght, the brush will go forward, touching the canva.
I can imagine in the future there being experiments where animals get equipped with prostetic limbs to see what they would be able to produce with them.
Have you tried giving her a pen? (Like a sharpie) or something? She seems a bit confused when it runs out of paint. You can see her trying to draw whatever she was trying to draw, but when there is no paint, she goes back over it again.
@AdoobibullTwins3n4 Actually that was a detail I haven't noticed before. So, next time I could do it again, I will definitely try with a pen to see if that makes a difference. For now, this dolphin is not painting any more unfortunately.
i myself am quite an artist, but i would have trouble painting with the paintbrush in my mouth instead of my hands & especially if my eyes were on the side of my head instead ofboth my eyes up front! I think these Dolphins do fantastic! :D i really liked how the painting looked too & how this Dolphin was aware of how she/he wanted the next stroke to look! . Very nice abstract art even! Dolphins are brilliant in so many ways! i LOVE DOLPHINS! :D
@Werewolphe yes definitely. Glad to see someone noticed that though. I've tried all kind of configuration with her, but this seemed to works the best though.
Sorry, I have to disagree. It's not a matter of intelligence, but a matter of dexterity. In my mind, dolphins and elephants are on the same par in terms of intelligence.
@frenchorcatrainer Elephents do produce better paintings - they draw trees, and flowers, and elephants! How about if you try to set up a couple of mirrors somehow so she can see what she's painting while she's painting it?
My jaw dropped @ :15 when I saw her grab the paintbrush!! She's so happy and beautiful.. thanks for taking care of her and introducing us to her artsy side!!!=)
@Otokage007 They can enjoy it. All depend on the way it's been train from the beginning though. This dolphin could paint even without any fish as reward sometimes, because she loved it.
@McHwarrior13 unfortunately, because of the mentality of the park's owner which was not at all going toward mine and my view of giving proper care of marine mammals.
Is she happy in the aquarium that she is at? Some dolphins are very miserables living in aquariums. Also,do you know if she was born in captivity or was captured? Did the trainers mention anything about those things?
@quelita28 As you can see on the video by yourself, I think we can both agree she definitely looks happy. She was transferred from another facility, but I don't know more than this though.
@quelita28 Yes, her 2nd baby is still alive. And yeah I noticed the talking. She was always into it for sure. She loved it soo much, that sometimes I didn't even need to use primary reinforcement with her at the end of the session.
@quelita28 I believe she is around 25 year old. I rather don't tell about the place, as they are not really careful about their animals now unfortunately.
unfortunately this seems like all it is is a trick... the dolphins are rewarded with food and it doesnt seem like they are even aware whether they are hitting the canvas with the brush or not. would be amazing if they were actually communicating with us through painting. Not sure though, some of the movements almost seem intentional on the canvas... heres hoping :)
It's not just a "trick" as you seems to believe. I first taught her what I wanted, of course using primary reinforcement. But, once she founds out about what she was really doing, she was doing it even when the session was finished, and no fishes where present. If you look correctly the video, you can see her actually painting, and then turning the head to look what she did (dolphins cannot see right front of their rostrum, so they have to turn the head to look properly).
More videos like this please! This is so cool, its so upclose, and personal. A cool video would maybe just be you and a dolphin interacting. Thats just a suggestion, but I think alot of people would find videos like these amazing, just like me!
it would be nice if you make a front shot of the painting after the dolphin has finished. so we can se the resulting pice of art.
