Hey, I'm very new to De La Riva Guard and I'm just wondering if its possible to just lift his leg up and out of the De La Riva hook without your hand holding his heel?
@KidSgNz No if he just lifts his leg you will lift the hook and be able to sweep. When using hooks as in X-guard / De la riva / Butterfly make sure you keep them active, if you opponent lifts / you lift your hook to continue the pressure, if they lift too much, you sweep.
@FightClubJiuJitsu Thanks! I have one more question, I'd tried this sweep a few times by now already but my opponent seems to always take my back once I switch my grip from left hand to right. Is there a way to angle my body to prevent this or do I just need to do the sweep faster?
@KidSgNz Have the same problem here. The problem is the head on the outside of his leg. If the head is on the inside, you will defend your back. Found the best thing to do is switch grip before sitting up: Grip with your right hand on his right sleeve, your left hand is free or on his heel/ankel. Sit up, and pull his right arm thorugh is legs, inside of his right thigh, and then grip his right sleeve with your left hand! Put your head on the inside of his right thigh, and sit up the other way!

when he changes hand position for the sweep you'd have to be quick to get him down cos the guy standing could step over using his left leg getting his back, it seems you are leaving your back exsposed
i THINK he can't really take your back by stepping cause he wouldn't have a good grip, and his other arm his still trapped so with a spin, he couldn't post.
at 427 whe he sits up his right leg comes away from the guys standing left leg... i think that when your experienced and this happens in this particular postion the element of control has gone... he would be able to move that left leg, your not gonna hang about and wait to get swept... as i said you'd have to be quick
@TarZan69lelenana Jiu-jitsu is all about action and re-action, each move has to be executed with the correct timing, and for every move there is a counter and then counters to those counters.
is it easy to transition from spider to de la riva? im just learning spider but would like somethign similiar..

no, because if he steps over, then you just spin around and get his back.
