can you tell me why then Leica cameras are so expensive. There is Leica x1 due out January with none of the bells and whistles of GF1 for $1200. Is the lens quality that noticeable in the shots to justify the price? Thanks.
@dingo27mobile All micro four thirds cameras have a 4:3 aspect ratio and their lens focal lengths have 2x crop factor, so a 50mm 4/3rds lens is equivalent to 100mm on a 35mm film camera.
@drake1990 They're pretty closely matched, with EP1 better in some areas and GF1 in some others. GF1 has flash and option of EVF, and better AF, so probably edges it in my view, but really it comes down to personal preference.
if u still don't make up ur decision, u better buy panasonic GF1.... it's much more better in picture's focus result...... olympus still can blur a little in focus... it's harder to make sure the focus properly from the lcd screen of olympus's........
@booJ13 No, though it does have some things in common: interchangeable lenses, DSLR-size sensor (same as in Olympus DSLRs) full manual controls. But no optical viewfinder system.
@jbounce The 20mm is smaller than the 14-55mm with a wider max aperture but of course isn't a zoom. The focal length is equivalent to 40mm on a 35mm camera.
@timmehboii You can change lenses. A 40D or Rebel is a 1.6 crop-factor camera, whereas this is a 2.0 crop factor. So the sensor size is smaller than APS-C, but still much bigger than most compact cameras. The end result is something with good image quality, versatility, and portability; however, it's neither quite as high quality as a full DSLR, nor as nearly as compact as a modern point-and-shoot.
I for one think it's a great compromise for something you can always take with you in a bag.
What? No it doesn't. The GF1 20mm lens is an f/1.7 lens, meaning its optical pupil (the virtual image of its aperture diameter) is the size of its focal length divided by 1.7, i.e., ~12mm. The sensor in the GF1 however is most definitely a 2.0 crop factor, meaning that actual focal lengths give one half an equivalent field of view as on a 35mm-format camera; in other words, the 20mm f/1.7 lens gives the same FOV as a 40mm lens on a 35mil camera (e.g. 35mm film camera or Canon 5D/1D).
i'm interested in photography, and i'm thinking of getting this as my 1st camera. is that a good choice? also, how is a pancake lens different from the regular lens?
Or get a panasonic lx3, pritty much the same internals. But alot cheaper. Leica has done alot for photography in history, but its time for them to get of their high horses.
It was just a bad term used by the guy explaining it, it is just a thin lens (compared to many). PM me if you have any questions at all about photography.
I still want a swivel LCD screen. (For us shy photographers) You can be looking down on the folded down while subject is straight ahead, nobody will notice you are talking a picture.
Are there any options for a 24mm equiv lens for this other than the 7-14mm?
Like maybe a prime or something?
That's what I really want to see from panasonic, a few fast primes for this in with 35mm equivs of say 24, 40 (done), and 70-85. Only 3 lenses I need.
cool it is just a micro GH1, I love these things getting smaller and smaller while keeping the sensor big. Now wish it hat retained that swivel LCD screen.
you don't want the swivel screen. they are trying to emphasize this as a similar shooting method to a rangefinder. big power, small camera. you can buy a digital viewfinder that plugs into the top mount for an extra 200 bucks.
i'm still trying to figure out whether HD is necessary. i don't have an HDTV and any video that i take would be uploaded to youtube, viewed by me on my laptop, or given to my students (public speaking performances) for them to view as they see fit.
not point, opinion as a "beginning" pro if you like nikon are ahead of canon with high iso sensitivity, raw and jpeg processing, most of all, over all image quality especially when zoomed right in close, sharpness and clarity are better with the nikon than canon, i gotta 50d and i love it personally, but i will be trading in for the d300s for sure, enjoy your canon
The lens included in the kit is the only difference between those two SKU's.
Bigger is better when it comes to image sensors. No matter how good a small image sensor is, a bigger one will almost always have better dynamic range, lower noise, and better image detail. That doesn't mean you wouldn't be happy with PnS quality, though.
It sounds to me like you should wait 'till these cameras hit the stores so you can test them hands on. Get the one that feels best in your hands.
Whoever downvoted my last comment must not have realized I was talking about the Four Thirds sensor in comparison to 1/1.8" (compact) sensors and not at all berating the image quality of Micro Four Thirds cameras like this one.
Sure, it's not near full frame quality, or quite at APS-C in terms of noise (yet), but it's still amazing considering the "camera size/image quality" ratio.
And if I didn't believe it was a great little camera, I wouldn't have one on pre-order!
900 dollars US and mono sound? they must be joking. you think it's worth a 500 dollar premium over the sony WX1, or a 300 dollar premium over the canon S90? HD, fine, peachy, but unless you are viewing it on an HDTV, there's not really much reason to need the step up from VGA, is there? just doing my OCD analysis paralysis indecisiveness thingy.
Compared to the other cameras you mention, the GF1 has a HUGE sensor, and as such, the photo quality is going to be MUCH better on the GF1 - almost as good as an entry level DSLR. The others have tiny little point-and-shoot sensors.
i'm looking for the best all-round camera for a reasonable price. i can't believe how much analyzing i'm doing. do you think HD is overkill? how much difference will you notice if you're not viewing it on HDTV? and only mono? i want good video capabilities, but obviously, it's a cam first. seems that there are entry level DSLR cams for a lot less than this. is it simply size that is pushing the price up? is this a G11 killer? ken rosewell rated the S90 as the best compact on the planet.
I think that depends on you. HD movies look delicious, but the file sizes are big. Definitely take that into account when buying one (is your hard drive big enough?). For me, it's the panasonic GH1. It has fantastic photo quality, and great HD movies. The GF1 should be the same just about all around. I'm not an expert, though.
I think the GH1 is just too much cam to lug around. I'm guessing that movies is the only area where there'll really be a difference. I know what you mean about file size, but is there really going to be a huge discernible difference between HD and non-HD given the fact that they'll be watched on a monitor? Damn that white GF1 looks stunning! Gotta forgo beer for a while....tough call.
Remember- the cameras you mentioned are both fixed lens cameras. While they are cheaper, and probably have great image quality, they don't offer the expandability of a interchangeable lens system.
Also, 720p video will indeed look nice on HDTVs, but also will look nice on most recent notebook and desktop screens, which are quickly moving over to 16:9 with resolutions close to or exactly that of a HDTV. And don't forget- this camera offers HD as well as VGA video resolution settings.
thanks, shreeb. don't think i'll be replacing my laptop any time soon. it's a 1.5 yr old macbook pro. i think this pancake lens would be enough 4 me. i guess my dilemma is asking myself, am i getting that much more useable camera for my needs? HD but no stereo. does that kill the HD experience? not expanding the lens kit, watching it on a mac, etc, so would a simpler non-HD cam (or even the WX1) be enough? i will do video, though, for sure. the white version of this GF has me knocked out.
If you don't see yourself upgrading beyond the kit lens, you may be happier with a high-end compact like the ones you mentioned.
As for the sound quality, I have been reading that it is surprisingly good, for a mono mic.
I am getting this camera because of the size, ability to buy more lenses in the future, and the ability to achieve decent DOF (with the right lens) in stills and video. Not to mention it has a nice screen, built in flash, and reportedly pretty quick AF.
problem: big hands! i'm not saying no to upgrading, but isn't the pancake lens a marvel in itself? i'm happy to know that the sound quality is there, because i'd do a lot of outdoor concerts, as well as taping my students' speeches. bottom line, i want a camera that will take very very good pics, and allow me to get back to what i did in high school, which is play around with settings and learn to navigate the learning curve, which i've unfortunately allowed to get rusty.
so, other than the fixed lens issue, do you think the GF1 is that much more camera than either the WX1 or S90? i read ken rosewell's opinion about the S90, calling it the best P and S camera ever made. i know bigger isn't always better, but this is the perfect size, solid, and durable looking. better for bigger hands. and great features. if mono sound is good, i'd settle for lack of stereo. worth the extra 3-400 over the S90? hard to tell until the reviews come out. what's taking them so long?
What I like about the micro four thirds system is the ability to use my older Canon FD lenses with an adapter. I have a nice collection of FD manual-focus glass, and it will be fun to put them to use on a digital.
I've seen the results, and it is worth me investing in a micro 4/3 as a second DSLR (Already have a Canon T1i) so I can play with my old lenses without paying to process film from my old A-1's.
I think I prefer the ergonomics of the GH1 to the GF1 though.

It's a nice camera but the video/audio capabilities are not as impressive as the GH1. In fact, the audio is not as impressive as even the Olympus EP-1. The EP-1 has stereo- the GF1 is mono. I don't know why Panasonic decided to cripple the video capabilities- perhaps to protect the GH1.
Also, for 2010, there will be the following lenses, showing Panasonic's continued commitment to the micro four thirds market: - 100-300mm f4-5.6 - 14mm pancake lens f2.8 - 8mm fish eye lens f3.5
Great Preview, it seems you are having a lot of knowledge about this.
