I just read that plans are being made for the Queen Elizabeth 2 to return to Liverpool. I hope this plan works, cause i'm getting very tired of waiting. If it were up to me. I will bankrupt the world, just to turn QE2 into a hotel & museum.
Well I think all old classic liners should be preserved as historical vessels. But not according to the greedy rich man. I love the qe2, I hope they don't do to her what they did to the queen Mary, rip out her engine space and let it be forgotten. The British should have more pride in their sea going history. I personally think qe2 should be preserved as a historic ocean liner
Such a sad end for a great lady who graced the seas for over 40 years, now lying there to be used by some rich arabs "Toy Thing".Typical American company who do not value history.. Sell her to the highest bidder for bigger bucks. How sad are Carnival Cruise Lines
How sad the end for a Grand old Lady of the Sea!, Far better that she be scuttled in mid Atlantic, than to end up in the hands of their ilk! What a tragedy!
In reading the comments on the QE2 I noticed that one individual more or less blamed Cunard for the sale of QE2 to Dubai. Others appeared not to sure as to who owned QE2. If you really want someone to blame for the sale of QE2 to Dubai, well how about blaming Carnival Cruise Lines. Why CCL? Because they own Cunard, lock, stock and barrel. I find it hard to believe that the sale of QE2 was not influenced by the owners of Cunard.
@wren741 She required far too much to be spent on her to bring her up to date with the rest of the Cunard fleet to be economically viable.Don't forget, most of the QE2 clientelle grew up with her in the late 60's and early 70's. Attracting todays new cruisers was becoming more and more difficult with the advent of the superliners with their climbing, golfing, and general activity based operation.
Shes now going to south africa to be a floating hotel during the 2010 world cup, no idea what it will be after that, i live in dubai and saw her leave around a month ago.
I worked on board In the Mauretania Restaurant and then the Queens Grill Restaurant.for 2 years from 1987-88 including the 88 world cruise. We went through a very bad storm around oct 1987 that I will never forget. She is a beautifull ship. I have since worked all over the world and seen the ship in Sydney, Capetown, Bermuda and Scotland I hope to go out and stay on board when it is a hotel in Dubai. Does anyone know when they will be taking bookings?
QE2 is just as much a part of British and Maritime heritage as Queen Mary, the HMS Belfast or any other ocean-going icon before her. She was a global ambassador for 40 years to Britain and the British people. It is a shame that she must spend her twilight years so far from home.
For profit or not, a company and a nation should preserve its heritage. Not every ocean liner can be saved. However, this was a ship that most people believed would not survive a decade after her maiden voyage, and is considered the last of her kind. Just as QE2 should be saved as the pride of the British maritime tradition, so should the SS United States be preserved in the same way for America. Both of these liners as irreplaceable as the White House and Buckingham Palace.
it is makes me soo sad to see this wonderful liner in this state, the last true brittish icon and its sold off.. why cant QE2 be brought back to where she realy belongs on the Solent or the Clyde. She ship even protested when she got stuck on the sand bank on her final arrival back to southampton :( BRING BACK THE WORLD MOST FAMOUS OCEAN LINER
It's interesting that after 3 or 4 months there is still smoke from the stack She must still be generating electricity on internal power. Doesn't look as if they are moving very fast to do the refit
Personally i agree with mechwarrior58, i will never forgive the ppl behind this outrageous decision to send QE2 to dubai! seeing her in that sorry state shakes me to the core! i believe that she should be back in Britain. On wikipedia it says there is a rumor that due to the recession, her conversion can't take place. PLEASE GOD LET THIS BE TRUE!!! bring back QE2!!
Considering she would have been forced out of service with SOLAS 2010, I don't know where your time frame comes from.
And Cunard wouldn't have spent the money to bring her up to code for just another 10 years anyway- just build a new ship... they are a for-profit business after all?
Heard QE2 is to be used as a floating power
Station for the Chinese, how sad

Well at least she's not on a beach somewhere. Hopefully she will never have the same fate as the Norway.

tntornadox : QE2 was close to being SOLAS 2010 compliant. SOLAS played very little role in her retirement.

They say that QE2 could of kept on sailing for another 5-10 years. It seems Cunard would rather have money than keep and preserve history.
