  • Holy Cow!! Maury was an awesome guitarist but he is completely amazing on this track! True musical magic!! I can't quit listening to it.

  • Happy Birthday Jim....

  • I love to read these posts and see that the music has never died! I cannot say anything bad about Jim or Maury except that the producers should have put them as an equal duo! I can never mention Jim without mentioning Maury! Their death still leaves me numb! I love Jim but Maury has never received his true contributions to Jims music! Shameful, because he was in on it all the lyrics and the music and because Jim was the so called headliner, upon their death Maury never got his due credits! That

  • Even though I like his music, and relates to me, the older that I get the more it hits home and can leave me in a funk. I guess it is an equiverent to some of us old school men to women who like to whatch tear jurker movies.

  • Damn, Jim with a full beard and stache!

  • If you didn't already know this, Pete Huttlinger has a Homespun DVD series of How to Play Jim Croce that has this song on it. I believe he shows both players parts on this one.

  • its time like this i wish i did not have carpeting.

  • One of his most energetic songs.

  • I was raised on this shit, always has & always will be the best!

Ya can't forget the classics, cuz without them there would be none of what most love now.

  • I love this man!! He has helped me through some tough times with his music!! and i dont think he looks like osama bin laden soooo i have no idea how u this so

  • I love this man!! He has helped me through some tough times with his music!!

  • jim would be on the no fly list he looks like osma binladen

  • My first music: My dad performed in a similar duet at the same time, Croce was a peer to him and when he died we all wept. I turn to his music when I remember my dad or when I want to pick up my mood. Great recording and video.

  • 5 dislikers silver tounges have turned to clay and their golden rules to rust.

  • Awesome song and lyrics. Jim Croce was one cool cat

  • we tend to play as fast as possible

  • There is nothing like the sound of a microphone as the pickup for the acoustic. It's so much more true to the actual tone of the guitar. It's the only way I will play my acoustic live.

  • although I hate to admit it --I know I grew up in the late 60's and graduated in 1973 from high school---therefore the music of Jim Croce was definately a BIG part of my "musical soundtrack "of life waaaaaaaay back then! I still love to listen to all of his songs-------Jim Croce was a GREAT talent gone WAAAAY before his time!!!!!

  • This song fits my inlaws to a T

  • @1evilsatan hahahaha... now that is a funny comment!

  • I love love love this song!!!!!!!

  • The best break up song ever.

  • xterrahawaii have not heard of them will check them out for sure thanks for the tip,,

  • It is indeed garbage what we have now.. :-)

  • This is what music is all about! Pure and true, and simple..Not like today with all the screaming, swearing, and weird clothes make up etc, we lost our way with music, too bad we can't get it back..

  • @tholmes41 So well put. It hurts that I can't listen to him and his music and all we have now is garbage. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't listened to Jim Croce.

  • @tholmes41 Groups like The Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes definitely remind me of Croce. Not identical by any means, but a good break from the screamo scene. Very natural guitar work and lyrics.

  • @tholmes41 lol. how old are you?

  • @anotherjoshua

I am just close enough to 50 to give it a friendly wave, but not close enough to give it a hug..

  • I miss him.

  • One of the greatest singer/songwriters in history! Not to mention he could play that acoustic.

  • @jaknzax Compared to Maury Jim was a beginner...He could play the shit out of an acoustic guitar

  • @izarah Seriously. Compared to other folk or singer/songwriter types during this era like Neil Young, James Taylor, Townes Van Zandt, Jim is nothing special as an acoustic guitar player. I love Jim Croce, but that's just a fact. Maury did all lead guitar playing and intricate playing.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Maury released 1 LP "Gingerbread" his family has bought the rights from Capitol and it is available in CD format also available is a demo CD from the same release. Worth seeking out.

  • one less set of talent on the planet,so good it justs always great to hear

  • I was born too late to ever remember seeing him perform live. But my mom used to listen to Jim Croce when I was a tyke.Every time I hear one of his songs, I feel myself rushing back to simpler times.Thank-you for the memories

  • Awe how I miss Jim Croce !! Love this song thank you for posting it !!

  • Love this song and love both of your guys. Thanks for these timeless expressions of creativity.

  • I always listen this music, all the day, make me feel good.

  • Match made in Heaven

  • music is not to be compared with a woman, coz when a woman gets old ,she `ll lost her beauty, music like this can stand the test of times!!!!!

  • Jim lives . In his music and our hearts

  • God how I cried when he died.....saw him at a coffee house concert....he was always one with the audience......too bad there are not more like him!!

  • "We've been hidin from something that shouldve never gone this far/But after all it's what we've done that makes us what we are" Miss ya Jim. RIP

  • I had a Jim Croce cassette tape playing in my car really softly when I was driving my girlfriend one night and this song came on during an argument. It took all my will power not to turn up the volume and use some help from the late great Jim Croce to tell her how I felt. I broke up with her in the coming weeks but this song makes me smile even more just knowing that the poetic timing of this musical legend couldn't have been better that night.

  • I never saw JC with a full beard! Whoa!

  • An American troubadour to da end!

  • Wow... I remember the morning I heard that he died in the plane crash the day before... First blurb of the news when my alarm went off... I thought he was extremely talented then, and still do...

  • It's not said enough. Thank you maury! R.i.P.

  • One of his best songs!

  • I was 8 years old when Jim Croce died. At that young age, his music has touched my soul and I felt like part of me died with him. What an amazing talent. His ability to convey a mental picture through lyrics was a true gift, not only to him, but to all of us.

  • @1loneframer I agree,I concur and I can relate to everything you said about Jim Croce. And what a two year radio run he had!

  • Good stuff....he was the best

  • "one less pair of jeans on your door"

  • "if that's the way you want it, well that's the way i want it more"

  • When Jim Croce died, the world lost such a great performer. He wrote awesome songs. His lyrics, voice, and the music will live on for decades!

  • Jim was a perfect example of the old addage, don't judge a book by it's cover. If you saw him on the street, would you imagine the talent that lied within him? He was truly blessed by God with that voice and songwriting ability. RIP Jim. Generations will enjoy your music and through those songs you have become immortal.

  • Always as good live as on his albums. A TRUE BLUE musician, Jim Croce had a song for any feeling you might have. He was so good at saying those things that one might not find the words for on their own. I miss him so very much & wish I could say there was someone in music today that is as talented as he is in this Genré. RIP Jim, and you know if "There's a Rock n Roll Heaven, well you know they have a hell of a band" ~Righteous Brothers (original version)

  • "Your silver tongue has turned to clay and your golden rule to rust"; what a statement....

  • great song

  • Another one gone too soon.. So very talented ...

  • I have posted on here before but it is painfully obvious that the fuckin eagles stole maury's riff solo from this song, and made take it easy! it disgust me to this day!

  • my dad got me hooked on Jim when i was growing up. Pure timeless classic music i still love it. Beautiful lyrics and a great singer. Accoustic guitaring the purest form of music in my opinion.

  • @MickDylan28 lol I was born in 86 and no every word from every song....timeless indeed!

  • why did he have to die?! What I would give for a live show...

  • anyone else impressed by jim's rockin beard? i mean, he had a glorious moustache, but the beard has just as much glory

  • As opposed to the pre-packaged rock stars and divas today.. Jim Croce's soul comes out in every song! Why he is not in the Hall of Fame is a disgrace!

  • I feel a special connection to Jim, he was born January 10, 1943 and I was born on what would have been Jim's 31st birthday, January 10, 1974; he died a little more than 3 months before I was born. Jim also worked as a special education teacher working with emotionally disabled students, which is what I do for a living. Jim was also in the U. S. Army as I also was, I have been a fan of his extraordinary music and songwriting since I was a very small child. The world is not the same without you!

  • I was born in 1977 so Jim was already gone when I heard him the first time. I was a little boy and to this day I can listen to him all day. Great song writer and performer. Thank you for posting this vid.

  • This does not appear to be lip synching. It's hard to tell because they are so on the money. It sounds very close to the recording. This is very hard to do. Many artists can not get close to the quality sound of the recordings.

  • RIP, Jim and Maury. You were taken from us way too soon. Hit #37 in Billboard. God bless!

  • early 70's not long ago,I remember like it was two days ago from thursday

  • is a major influence and some of my heroes are disappointments lately

  • jim croce is my favorite when it comes to folk songs

  • Still love Croce - has it really been that long since he died??

  • It's been a lifetime since Jim and Maury's passing. I felt like I lost a brother when he died. I was 16 years old in the summer of '73 when Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown was a hit. 2 years before that hit record I was already listening to my older brothers albums like You don't mess around with Jim" and I knew then that this guy was special. I don't know where his career would have taken him. I do know that there will never be another one like him. RIP Jim, till we meet again

  • had u heard the song he recorded with his wife? " spin-spin-spin"

  • we all love and miss you jim. we wish we still had your musical genius here with us instead we hav only wat u left behind

  • @wafflecopter1000 Oh there not dead, there still singing and playing there guitars .

    They can never die

  • @wafflecopter1000 My favorite singer of all time....I was in the Navy and it was 1973....So sad he passed as he was peaking in his career.....

  • @wafflecopter1000 he's still teaching me.

  • jim croce is a GOD!

  • Forever in our hearts

    January 10, 1943 September 20, 1973

  • Funkytrekka9 has posted the Intro, Verse fills, Middle Eight fills and the Lead break for Jim Croce's One Less Set of Footsteps.

  • Jim would have been a huge star if he had servived he is brillyent. All original music to wrote I belive every single song he recorded!Soooooo many to the box set is awesome..The music today is THRASH IT IS SOO SAD TO!

  • Agreed, Jim was great - and don't forget Maury! That signature Jim guitar sound is largely actually Maury's playing - and frequently Maury's composition as well.

Also, while most of the songs Jim recorded were originals, he did several covers. "I Got a Name" wasn't written by Jim, and I know he covered a Gordon Lightfoot tune, though I can't remember which one.

  • Thanks for lettin me know that wasnt sure about all the originals he actually did,I figured he wrote them all ,oh well atleast he wrote the majority of them.I have some great songs I am in process of putting on here ,that are not on utube I think people would like...Thanks for reply..Be intouch...

  • I can say this I think as a HUGE Jim

Croce fan, I'm not so sure how he would

    have progressed musically, don't forget

the 70's were very much a singer/songwriter era, you wonder how

he would have done through the new wave of the 80's, and other changes after that., I think

he was so good he would've found a way

to stay relevant, but...it's not a given.

Sure wish we could have found out.

  • If you go to the Sugarmegs site you can hear his entire last show on the night he died. Artists are listed under their first names, so go to "J" and you'll find it. Lots of other great artist's shows as well.

  • Jim & Maury - it was a duo.

  • non radio play klassik .......croce rocking!!!!!

  • Awesome tune and good driving song for sure.

  • Have you ever heard anything resembling this music for about 40 years? I think not. A one of a kind. Simply brilliant and like everyone else here, I miss them!

  • so true music is not this good anymore

  • Lost my youtube details due to email and server provider changes. Now I am funkytrekker9. Will soon upload a fairly reasonable version of the fills and lead for this song. Accuracy is about 95%

  • loved him then, love him now.

  • Thanks for posting this video man. Made my day.

  • "We were lucky to have him for as long as we did. I sometimes wonder what Jim would think of the "music" that is being churned out now... I'm happy that my 11 & 17 year old both like to listen to OUR music and have Jim on their iPods! Gone, but not forgotten. Cheers Jim, you're the best."

  • Hey don't missjudge us youg people for loving the mostly shitty music produced today! There will always be those of us who are musicians and need the real stuff ;-) .

  • I am 17 too. I listen to many classics like this, there are only a few that even makes the same type of tunes these days, and it's good, but it can't be compared to Jim. I would do anything to be able to meet this man.

Today most part of music is crap, I hope people at my age realizes soon that a devestating sound of base mixed with stupid computer sounds and a horny girl screaming stuff isn't real music.

  • Jim and Maury ROCK! Man I miss that guy.....

  • Short hair , bearded Jim Croce. Distinguished look , timeless music.

  • Do you know what year this was? was this shortly before his death? Im wondering if the beard came before or after the mustache

  • omg!! i did not realize my boy was only 30 when padded away. my heart breaks.....

  • i don't know what. hopedfully i found this lovely song on my own and did not require the help of some dis functional relationship. i am my own woman and hear me roar about how much i love j c!!!!

  • Talent doesn't need corporate backing, Jim Croce R.I.P.

  • @BBQMAN81 Amen, brother.

  • I absolutely love Jim Croce's music! I was only five when he died and wish I had been older, to sit in that audience and listen to that song, that man, that style, that gifted talent live and in person.

  • Gonna send this song out to Simone tonight. Congrats. You've got everything you want, but a hell of a lot less than you need. Spock said it best. "After a time, you may find that having is not as great a thing as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true."

  • Nice one... ! Sending this song out to Carlos, ditto.... ha! "If that's the way that you want it, well that's the way that I want it more!"

  • I love this video.

  • I was 12 years old when the world lost these two fantastic musicians. Imagine what they could have continued to bring to the world.

  • bein' im less than 2 yrs from half a century now i remember a song from an album put out after their passing, dbl called faces i've been song called i remember mary and i had a girlfriend mary who did the exact same thing as in the song if someone could post just the audio it is a haunting song done by maury. t/c l-n-prayers, wade

  • awesome!! thanks for posting. I just cannot get any of my acoustic guitars' strings to bend so well as to sound like Maury..

  • Simply OWNS!!!Jim is a Total Legend and his quality of music is so unique and will never be replaced!!!THX 4 the Beauty, Jim!

  • Beautiful voice and a beautiful song

  • Thanks CAMWUST for your pearls or wisdom for the seekers of tabs and covers etc. "Buy thier CDs and support thier familys." Not only that, buy some of Jim's Jrs. music too, and check out "Croce's" web site and go to thier resterant in San Diego, Calif. and send an Email to Maury's family, they could use a kind word from some fans out there!!!

  • damn maury is a badass...haha.

and jim's talent overall is just beyond words.

  • Does Maury solo/ theme from this song seem like the eagles rip it off?? 1:40 seems questionale similar to 2 that wanna stone me 1 thinks she..... lemme know if Im just crazy! great song thanks!!!

oh and while, ""After all it's what we've done that makes us what we are.." is damn good

Gotta go with 2marrows a dream away!

  • sounds a bit like one of the Eagles' solos - can't remember which one - but this one came first chronologically.

Re the strings, I do seem to remember reading that a turning point for them was their use of the Ernie Ball strings - changed the sound.

  • take it easy...two that want to hold me one thinks she's a friend of mine....at 1:38 on its almost identical...as the dude would say...not the fuckin eagles man!

  • Thanks! I was in radio when Take It Easy came out...I should have recognized it. Well done! Means the chord progressions should have been similar, too. Slow this one down and it sounds like they are.

  • Man can Maury bend those strings! Wonder what guage he is using...

BTW, "After all it's what we've done that makes us what we are.." is just about my favorite line from any song.

  • His best.........great song!

  • I'll give you a tip on the Maury's leads, string your acoustic guitar with Ernie Ball Slinky .010 electric strings. Once I read that's what he used for his flat picked leads in a Guitar Player interview, what he was doing made perfect sense.

  • Every song this man writes and sings carries a message that most of us can relate to. What a shame we lost him so long ago....God Bless Jim Croce

  • I always loved Maury's accompaniments, and this clip showcases them nicely. He never said much, but he knew just what to add to Jim's beautiful songs. What a tragedy that we lost them both. The songs live on.

  • I totally agree that we lost two of the best...Together they gave us so much...Beautiful stories wrapped beautifully in a musical package.

  • Awesome!!!Jim is a Total Legend!!!XD!!!!

  • I remember loosing my V-card to my high school crush back in '78. We got alittle tipsy on some home made wine while we were parking in my dads Chevy. Damn she knew how to please a man. She did this thing with her tongue....It would drive a man wild.

  • Timeless music with that distinctive guitar and voice. Knocks me out.

  • i love folk and country music!!!

  • he is MY man

  • Yeah but back off he's all Ashley Shimko's.

  • mine too! Always will be.

  • Gotta love Jim Croce!

  • Maurie looks kinda like Lennon, heh.

  • Jim and Karen Carpenter. It doesn't get any better then those 2.

  • This in my opinion edges Dylan for the greatest singer song writer of all time O what he would have become

  • ...gosh... I agree. Fabulous! .. and what a guitarist he had in Maury

  • *frown* He was good, but the greatest singer songwriter ever is Neil Young and THAN Bob Dylan. After that it can come down to a lot singer/songwriters.

  • Huh? let's not start a food fight. SMH

  • If this guy was still alive he would stomp 'em.....but alas he is not.

    Kemo

  • how can you even compare the two jim croce was taken well before his time the only thing neil young has goin for him is hes still alive and got to make his music jim was taken before he even got a chance to reach that status , jim blows neil young outa the water , neil young just blows

  • It is not a contest.

If you like this you like this.

If you like that you like that.

    Music is like women.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • @zebratangozebra some people seem to have had their eyes put out cause all that rap and bubble gum music is all damn ugly as hell to me!

  • @zebratangozebra Music is also like men, there is "HARD ROCK" "SOFT ROCK" "CLASSIC ROCK" AND DICKGO'

  • What a brilliant talent he was! Shame he had to die too young. Always appreciated his songwriting skills.

  • But tomorrow's a dream away, and today has turned to dust. You're silver tongue has turned to clay and you're golden rule to rust! If that's the way that you want it, that's the way I want it more.....

    Love love love this man!

  • Jim Croche rocks!

  • Don't you just miss the days of acoustic guitars?

  • truly i do!!!

  • You can say that. Just a pair of guitars and a voice. No need more for make a jewel like this.

  • DENNELLO

I agree I do miss the days of acoustic guitar, especially since I was a lead singer in a rock band (lol) but I still miss those days, I now play a bit of acoustic I never took the time to be very good at it, maybe in my really old age! I miss this man!

  • can some one do the opening licks for me,, pls...........

  • i really love Jim's Music

  • thanks

  • Sounds like a few of the relationships I've been in.

    Great song!

  • Very Nice!

    Mabuhay si jim croce!

  • awesome!

  • Cooool soong!!

  • I LOVEEEE this song!!! [= [= [=

  • My mom used to listen to Jim all the time. I quickly became a fan. Man could that guy write. I hear his songs and It's 1972 all over again. Windows in the house open, summer breeze blowing and Jim Croce on the 8 track!

  • 8 Track - man, that'd date it all on its own! :-) Its sad how such talent has to be snuffed out so early - this man could write........RIP Mr. Croce.

  • no thats maury muelsleihm didntspell it right but yeah thats his back-up great to men lost to soon ive never seen him with a beard ,looks so differnt

  • Yeah. I think the hair of the beard fitted better on his head ;-) Interesting. But they were so great together, Maury and Jim!!

    Muehleisen, bei the way.

  • is that his son?? is he dead too??

  • Jims son is still alive, he is a very good piano player. Funny thing is, his son learned to play piano in the same key his Dad used for most songs...by chance.

  • this is my favourite croce song but ill be damned if i can find the tabs anywhere
