I recall reading the current issue of Circus/Raves mac in the Summer of 1975 and reading that David was filming a movie in secret with Nick Roeg...we saw it in APRIL 1976 ,pretty sure...TORONTO...going by my mem, Station to Station concerts made up for it all...Oh yeah baby.......it was so,so...but the massive black and white Return of the Thin White Duke, (references to cocaine of course)
Met him twice seen him live over 30 times since 1974...a wonderful fellow to chat with...he is extremely funny..a real joker type...love Toronto,Canada...visits here all the time..thanks for the mems!
@repelghosts i am utterly jealous!!!! I would literally amputate my left foot to have seen him in the 70's. Did you see the Diamond Dogs tour? No don't tell me,it's simply not fair.
Bowie is the fucking different in music and personallity, magical, spacious, weird... ARTIST!!! True and phenomenal great ... He is Spider from Mars!!!
@lippy170 david bowie wasn't mainstream at that time. he only became kind of mainstream in the 80s with "Let's Dance" and everything. most good music is relatively underground. that was true then, and is true today
Bowie used Wakeman to play the parts where he needed a real keyboard player. The parts Bowie couldn't handle himself. Rick played on Space Oddity and Life on Mars and all the way up to 1971. From Aladdin Sane Mike Garson took over because Wakeman started in Yes. Bowie knows how to pick the good ones!!
The marvelous new reinvention of David is occuring through his grandchildren: Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, and Robt Pattenson. As these children discover this wonderful music, it is a beautous journey of rediscovery as well for their parents. Required reading: Charles Shaar Murray and David's own modern harmony in Stage Anthology. Yassassin.
Bowie has been on my music shelf since I first heard his music over 35+ yrs. ago, Fame, Cat People theme song, Major Tom are all stuck in my head on rewind for life.
how can you not apriciate the brilliance of David jones( bowie) with out him millions of artists wouldnt even exist in the way they do now e.g lady gaga speechless brown eyes very bowie and very glam
BUT,Mick played piano on countless other Bowie songs, and was instumental in the arrangement of this pie ce.
No Knock to Garson, ( though that will be addressed later) BUT, and this is a big But, many of us who were Bowie fans since Ziggy & before, really feel that Garson really influencned Bowie in a negative way, and actually detracted from his creativity at the time.
Just a comment from a fan of 40+ years who witnessed the CHCHCHChanges
That's crazy. Throughout the Ziggy Stardust album, Mick Ronson goes plonk plonk on the piano like a musical carthorse. Garson's a proper pianist - creative and original.
@adjusteratlarge What? Please check the liner notes from Hunky Dory to see that Bowie used Rcik Wakeman early on. Also, the Beeb videos from 1973 have Bowie playing the piano himself, not Mick. Due to a fight with Mick, Bowie took on the piano on Diamond Dogs, then used Roy Bittan on STS. So, 1) Ronson, if he played some piano it was minor and 2) the Garson piano is part of a line of pianists that Bowie used - and is the best of the bunch in my humble opinion as a 50 year old Bowie fan.
That's Mike Garson on piano. He has been working with David Bowie (on and off) since the 1970's, when I first heard him in 1973. If you are interested, check out the David Bowie 1995 CD "Outside" and the track "The Motel", also "Lady Grinning Soul" on the 1973 CD "Aladinsane" has some beautiful piano playing on it too.
Mike Garson is AMAZING on THIS recording!!! He never did receive his warrented share of recognition and praise as a collaborator, because he was over-shadowd by Mick Ronson ( which is typical,.. in rock music keyboardists dont tend to receive the same kinde of adulation which guitar players do ) but, let it be said, that his contribution to Bowies music was most crucial and often spectacular!!!!
I am 51, African American who started listening to Bowie as a high school sophomore. I am from a very musical city (Memphis) and will say that Bowie is a musical genius. Period!!
i need help. my friend is a big david bowie fan but i don't get it. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but why is david bowie such a great artist? what is it that people see it him. is it his lyrics?
My friend is the same way. We're a bit in the same boat here...and I guess it's A) his sex appeal (if your friend is female) and B) they just love his music. I'm not sure, because I only like a few songs (the few that I've heard) of his, but I guess the only thing you can do is give him a chance. :)
Wow, glad to hear you ask instead of just making some negative comment like so many others who are not open-minded enough to just ask! Partly, his music is interesting. His lyrics are not trite or dull, he has a good use of language, the rhythm and style is not cliche. He has a voice that goes directly to the limbic system (hence the sensual/sexual response so many have). He is beautiful to look at in that androgynous way. And he has a phenomenal sense of humor (check out some interviews).
he takes a while to get used to...kind of like beer, its an acquired taste. i love him for uniqueness and for never being afraid of being what and who he wanted to be, his lyrics are also very interesting and he has so many talents beyond just music.
He flipped me out when I was 10 years old as Ziggy and I've followed him since.... the world is a poorer place without Bowie - before him there wasn't much - after Bowie, there is nothing much. His talent just comes from the most mysterious place. Truly touched by Almighty God! Bowie is the business.
The feel of it right from the beginning.. the piano and casual lilt that it has.. and his soft vocals. The piano really gets to me and I am not normally into the sound in pop or rock music.. it just works so well here. I am "hit" with the lonely theme of the song.. It's hard to articulate what *it* is that haunts me.. it just does. And yes I love Marc (RIP).. since 1972.
What can you say? He is the most inventive rock performer. What an imagination to create this song. Everyone gets obsessed over the title, but what an album: Drive in Saturday, Lady Grinning Soul, Watch That Man, Panic in Detroit and then this song. This has to be my favorite Bowie song - the writing, the piano, --really fantastic!
