You need to get the bar below your chin, preferably down to the lower neck (some people say chest but I say they're just using momentum to go past the point where your muscles could actually pull you to), to get the full effect. You're only cheating yourself.

i just use weightlifting gloves. you still get some callus but its nothing near the amount of excess callus you get from barehanded pull up bar exercises. i personally use thin harbinger gloves. they look and feel cheap, but its only 10 dollars and they work alot better than they look.
so you are using gloves to make your forearms stronger? what type of logic is this? why dont you just do some deadlifts and heavy shrugs. that will certainly improve your forearm strength. dont want calluses? use CHALK.

Looked alright to me. Have you tried putting your chin over the bar everytime with the wide angled grip like that? It really isn't necesary and this guy did just fine, IMO.

Also give the kid a break. I hit puberty at 11 but muscle growth didnt stimulate until around 17. Age makes a big difference.
