Ricky Skaggs seems to always get the best talent in his bands. I would give anything to play the Banjo like Jimmy Mills or the fiddle like Andy Leftwich
I went to the Billy Graham Revival in the old RCA Dome in Indianapolis in 1999 to hear Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, who were touring with Rev. Graham at the time. They sang both of these tunes plus "Soldier of the Cross", all beautifully done. I think Ricky Skaggs is the single best musician in all of contemporary bluegrass, and that's saying a lot!
so like veryone else two amazing songs... now i play the guitar and the banjo and i just want to say to anyone who atleast wants to learn the first song it sounds and looks hard but if you have a good ear it is pretty easy for the left hand. but awesome songs i am trying to get my church band to play them... hopefully we will
Ricky Skaggs has a great ear for harmony, and these two songs are fantastic, both musically and lyrically. It's so good to hear a well-crafted song with the faith to back it, and musicianship of this quality. The presenter's mullet is laughably terrible, and all the more so as everybody else around him has a normal haircut.
@watchingtelly I'm with jteran. Most people overlook the do because Marty is an incredible instrumentalist. be careful of how you speak of other people for you too have been treated this way by others (i can almost guarantee it). we've all had that happen to us so remember "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"
Incredible arranging, bullet-proof harmonies and a wicked bluegrass groove- vintage Skaggs. This music makes me want to start going to church again. Thanks for posting !
i love both those songs, who should I listen too when it comes to bluegrass? I dont have any radio stations with bluegrass, in KC area, that I know of.
Congrats to Ricky & Kentucky Thunder on their recent Grammy! I had the privilege to see them play Jan. 25 2009 and they were phenomenal! Nothing but love for them :)
Ricky didn't write either one of these songs.. the first song "Halelujah I'm Ready To Go" has been around since Bill Monroe... and Bob Dylan even performed it. And the other song "Are You Afraid To Die" was written by Ira Louvin after he saw Billy Graham
Hallelujah, I'm Ready To Go was written by Ralph Stanley, and, as bluegrassguy says, Are You Afraid To Die was written by Ira Louvin. These are two of my all-time favorites by one of my all-time favorites.
I love hip hop and death metal and postmodern experimental nonsense.
But I also love bluegrass.

That presenter is Marty Stuart. Most people overlook the mullet due to the fact that he is one of the most incredible musicians out there.

@jteran29 Yes, Marty Stuart is a truly great musician. He is also one of the few men cute enough to be able to pull off a mullet. ;-)
