Personally, I would say the M1 Carbine is closest to that role for the WW2 U.S. Army. It has the characteristic intermediate-power rifle cartridge and light weight. Also, full-auto capability came at the end of the war so it did become a de-facto assault rifle.
Not to say the guy in the video is a bad soldier, but look at how he has to position himself to control the recoil. Soldiers of WWII could fire this thing one handed while be shoving Kar98s up a Nazi's asshole with the other hand without problems.
@Cozmolyne Yea because soldiers back then were trained with BARs. I bet you if the Army trained it's soldiers with BARs they'd hold it differently as well. Its a new weapon to him, a new weapon he probably has no experience firing.

@333Germane333 The Mg42 was indeed a nice piece of kit, I'll hand it to the Germans you know your way around machine guns. @333Germane333 Being of Germanic ancestry and being from modern Germany are entirely different things. The MG42 is absolutely less controllable than the BAR; that's how it was designed. The idea behind the MG42 was to get as many rounds in the air as quickly as possible, and to do that, they upped the rate of fire, thereby giving up some accuracy and controllability. Not better, not worse, just different.
@50CalTV Wow, you just totally eroded any credibility you might have had. The BAR's biggest problem in the light machinegun role was its accuracy; it was too accurate. Generally, for suppressive fire you want dispersion rather than pinpoint accuracy.
It's amazing, although the BAR was heavy, had a small magazine capacity(20 rounds) and overall didn't match the requirements of a light machine gun, it's rated a sone of the most important automatic weapons of WW2. Despie these short comings, it was powerfull, reliable, and a great SAW(Squad Automatic Weapon) and was in use from 1918 through the start of the Vietnam War.
@classicrocker13able yeah but if you ask any world war 2 american vet they would rather have 3 BARS or 1 mg42 in their squad and they will all say the mg42
@101andrewj Yeah, I agree with you on that one, the BAR was meant more for individual short burst while the MG42 is great at keeping heads down with it's high firing rate.

Don't think so. It was always intended to be a squad support weapon, fired in short bursts. Its such a big gun that extended clips would be rather clumsy.
@TheDieHard777 Assault rifles fire intermediate rounds. So no, with the a full sized, huge .30-'06 round, its better than an assault rifle. Its an Automatic Rifle
@TheDieHard777 Actually, the first true modern assault rifle was the St.GW-44 Manufactured by the Nazis and put to rather effective use against the Soviets. Cosmetically and ballistically similar to the AK-47. The Browning Automatic Rifle was actually (believe it or not) considered a light machine gun despite its 20 round mag.
Yes, the BAR was really an infantry support weapon rather than what it's believed. The St. GW-44 is the true first modern assault rifle and there was an amazing story about how a squadron of Germans fought their way out of an encirclement by heavily armed Soviet soldiers and back towards their own lines. Can't get any better than that!
It's definitely the First shoulder fired automatic rifle but it used a full rifle cartridge (The 30.06... imagine firing THAT full auto) whereas the STG44 used a 7.92x39mm Kurz round ( similar to the 7.62x39 round). Put the two bullets together and you'll see the 30.06 packs a lot more powder behind the round. It's like comparing 7.62x39 to 7x62x51 (or x54). It's almost comical.
So I would say that the BAR is closer to the first LMG than the first AR.

@csmybuttt The BAR's from WW2 were in use at the beginning of Nam. They were in such bad shape that the military started looking for replacements like the Stoner 63 and M60. If they were in that bad of shape after 15-20 years, imagine how bad of shape they are 70 yrs later, hence my choice of something else.
@AFSOCbum I mean, some of them still are intact, aren't they? Like the one in the video. Sure, some of the guns aren't probably salvageable, but that's not true for all of them. In either case, I'll still take the BAR.
@Master7770 I meant between WW2 and Nam. As in, they deteriorated that much in 20 years between WW2 and Nam, imagine how bad they would be 70yrs later (now).
@hummerskickass Yes, back in the day it was a fearsome weapon, I'm saying now they are not because they have not been manufactured since WW2 and the ones around today are iffy and temperamental.
It's only shooting slow because of the model he is shooting. He was shooting, i believe an M1918A2 which has a rate of fire switch. "slow" is about 400-450 RPM and "fast" is about 600-650 RPM
@TwinklesPussMaster61 the BAR was designed to shoot slowly, in the attack to preserve ammunition. It was used to keep the enemy's head down, while others maneuver to the flanks and rear, close enough to pitch in a grenade. That tactic was developed at heavy cost by French Chausseur units who taught it to US doughboys in WWI. The French and US used the Chauchat in 8mm Lebel. Rate of fire was about 250 rounds per minute. The French developed a LMG from the BAR with a top mounted 25 round magazine
I love how the BAR is so heavy you just have to have a good stance and pull the trigger and the gun absorbs its own recoil, I bet its accurate as hell even on full auto, awesome.
@J3rEmY17 The BAR was thought to be "too accurate" not suppressing the entire bunker with a cone of fire, but rather putting all rounds at combat distances into a single part of a weapons slit. The gunner had to compensate by spreading the fire as he was shooting.
@twin1010101010 You don't know me to say that,I probably know more about what you say than you.Federal Reserve-Elders of Zion protocols-Rothchilds-Builderburg-Illuminati-NWO-Georgia Guidestones-Knights Templars-David Icke-Jordan Maxwell-Reptilians-Anunaki-David Duke-FEMA camps,on and on.What I am saying is that if you think that by informing the whole world of this is gonna fix the world, its not so just enjoy crappy life. The whole cuban hate their gov't and what can they do-learn to think.
@twin1010101010 wow you must be some type of CIA double agent or something to make such an accusation like that................hmm..........oh wait ur not........oh and those missing plane parts are hiding in ur ass just how u like it. BITCH!
so thats what the gun sounds like. when the fuck are games going to get the damn sounds right. battlefield already accomplished that years ago, but as for call of duty they to work on it. what a fucking beast of a gun. Reminds me of the movie Windtalkers where chick is screaming and shooting the BAR at the same time. Fucking badass.
Maybe its because the gun is so freaking heavy or maybe its because the gun is so well designed, but most guns on full auto that shoot that big a round become anti-aircraft guns after a few bursts. The BAR doesn't seem to do that.

@Blade4613 That could be an option, but let's say 10 more round would make a big mag with a 30-06 round.
MrThomPS3 9 months ago
@MrThomPS3 i was only making some ideas because you see that it's powerful and has long range but, low ammo in the clip...
Blade4613 9 months ago
@Blade4613 I see, would be a monster of a weapon if it had a big capacity.
MrThomPS3 9 months ago
@MrThomPS3 exactly...high damage, high ratio... awesome

that gun looks heavy!

@daveed793 The BAR is so old and unreliable now that I'd rather be given a slingshot.
AFSOCbum 10 months ago
@AFSOCbum Honestly, no one is going to take a slingshot over a BAR, so it's a win-win.
csmybuttt 10 months ago
@csmybuttt The BAR's from WW2 were in use at the beginning of Nam. They were in such bad shape that the military started looking for replacements like the Stoner 63 and M60. If they were in that bad of shape after 15-20 years, imagine how bad of shape they are 70 yrs later, hence my choice of something else.
AFSOCbum 10 months ago
@AFSOCbum I mean, some of them still are intact, aren't they? Like the one in the video. Sure, some of the guns aren't probably salvageable, but that's not true for all of them. In either case, I'll still take the BAR.
csmybuttt 10 months ago
@AFSOCbum 15-20? the start of nam was over 40 years ago dude.
Master7770 8 months ago
@Master7770 I meant between WW2 and Nam. As in, they deteriorated that much in 20 years between WW2 and Nam, imagine how bad they would be 70yrs later (now).
AFSOCbum 8 months ago
@AFSOCbum ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY THAT THING MADE KRAUTS RUN IN FEAR AND I SHURE IT WOULD MAKE YOU DO THE SAME
hummerskickass 10 months ago
@hummerskickass Yes, back in the day it was a fearsome weapon, I'm saying now they are not because they have not been manufactured since WW2 and the ones around today are iffy and temperamental.
AFSOCbum 10 months ago
Old School =)

It's only shooting slow because of the model he is shooting. He was shooting, i believe an M1918A2 which has a rate of fire switch. "slow" is about 400-450 RPM and "fast" is about 600-650 RPM
UrT1meSlipsAway 10 months ago
Dam that thing shoots slow
TwinklesPussMaster61 10 months ago
@TwinklesPussMaster61 the BAR was designed to shoot slowly, in the attack to preserve ammunition. It was used to keep the enemy's head down, while others maneuver to the flanks and rear, close enough to pitch in a grenade. That tactic was developed at heavy cost by French Chausseur units who taught it to US doughboys in WWI. The French and US used the Chauchat in 8mm Lebel. Rate of fire was about 250 rounds per minute. The French developed a LMG from the BAR with a top mounted 25 round magazine
DonMeaker 10 months ago
@DonMeaker yea I thought that was the case
TwinklesPussMaster61 10 months ago
Why is there dislikes on every video i see, how can you dislike this?
rickieingle101st 10 months ago
Can you believe that this gun is a 30-06?
iwasborntohunt357 10 months ago
On almost every gun video there's a funny comment war waging. Read 'n' laugh.
0YtsanBlowout0 10 months ago
I love how the BAR is so heavy you just have to have a good stance and pull the trigger and the gun absorbs its own recoil, I bet its accurate as hell even on full auto, awesome.
J3rEmY17 10 months ago
@J3rEmY17 The BAR was thought to be "too accurate" not suppressing the entire bunker with a cone of fire, but rather putting all rounds at combat distances into a single part of a weapons slit. The gunner had to compensate by spreading the fire as he was shooting.
DonMeaker 10 months ago
why all the hatred? cant we just get along and roast some marshmallows over a hot gun barrel?

so thats what the gun sounds like. when the fuck are games going to get the damn sounds right. battlefield already accomplished that years ago, but as for call of duty they to work on it. what a fucking beast of a gun. Reminds me of the movie Windtalkers where chick is screaming and shooting the BAR at the same time. Fucking badass.

I don't get it. Where are the dead germans?
MysteryoftheGods 1 year ago
Maybe its because the gun is so freaking heavy or maybe its because the gun is so well designed, but most guns on full auto that shoot that big a round become anti-aircraft guns after a few bursts. The BAR doesn't seem to do that.
Odin029 1 year ago
@Odin029
it does weigh around 20lbs. hahahah
nyclaybreaker 1 year ago
@Odin029 it's both really. the gun is heavy and the fire rate is pretty low as you can see. helps prevent muzzle rise.

Their is a wall in Dorking in Surrey that has nine lumps missing from the brick work. it is the result of a hung over GI and a dropped BAR in 1943. The wall never stood a chance lol. But then again nore did the GI. He had been drinking english beer all night. :-)
tina6581 1 year ago
@tina6581 He was probably Mormon. Most Americans can handle English beer just fine. Scotch, now...that's another matter entirely.
