One of the most passionate and beautiful pieces in the world. I love the way he pours his soul into the music, although the moving around is a bit distracting, but I'm not complaining. I'm learning this for my exam. So beautiful. :)
@FeliciaMirage He's not so distracting in person since the camera isn't trying to keep up with his movement. I thought I would have to just close my eyes and listen, but I actually enjoyed watching him move into the music.
Beautiful: Spirit of the Violin in complete tune with the Player and what a genious. He makes the piece sing like an Angel with such love as if it talks to you. And i love this concerto. He is completely in touch with the peice as if it's taking him along on the journey. I love this guy!!
WHEN was this? WHERE is this performance? WHAT orchestra is behind him? WHO is the conductor? WHY don't YouTube posters follow a few fundamental journalistic guidelines?!?!?!
Listening to music I can get away from all the bad things that happen in life like racism, bullying, sexism, vulgarity, etc. I am addicted to the medicine of music.
I was lucky enough to "happen" onto a Joshua Bell recording back in 1989 when he & Jean-Yves Thibaudet issued a recording of Fauré, Debussy & Franck. It has since be reissued (2005) with more "mature" artwork- but I remember when I first heard it I couldn't believe such depth coming from a young man that looked like he was 16 (at the time he was actually around 22.) He has always had a prodigious gift for music and this is no exception. I recommend his "Voice of the Violin" as well- very moving!
Totally off topic, but...have you seen his beautiful home in NYC? There's a spread in Architectural Digest, May '10 I believe. I'm so happy that people who can create such beauty get paid well sometimes. :-)
I was lucky enough, one afternoon , in 1970, to be allowed to play for a few minutes on a Strad, 1702, on loan from Curtis Institute to a fellow musician. I played the Massenet Meditation and it was magical! In the hands of Bell, this great violin, hidden from view for so many years, finally egts to again sing.
Is there a 'repeat automatically' button on Youtube? When this beautiful music stops, my revelry is broken and I screw up my knitting. ha ha...Seriously though, is there a way to have this keep playing w/out having to get back up and push a button and get settled again? (I know--if this is the worst of my problems, I'm doing ok) :-)
@benjalex12 Thanks. I've never done much more on Youtube than type in what I want to hear and click 'play', I'll have to mess around with it and figure some stuff out.
"Music is my band aid. It heals everything for me" #ihatequotes >Indeed. Bruch and Bell beautifully define it for me... and cure me... even only for a while :)
How can anyone measure between Hahn, Rabin, Bell, or any of the other 100's of technically gifted soloists? Mark O'Connor may be the most versatile violinist/fiddlers living.
I thought all violin phenoms were the same, but Mr Bell made a believer out of me. I agree that he is a veritable genius on his $18 million Stradivarius. Too hear him live with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on 10/8/09 was incredible. Who cares about how the guys moves when he plays like he's pouring out his soul.
This is some of the most beautiful playing I have ever heard. Mr Bell is a Mozart of our time, a veritable genious. I'm going to hear him play this very concerto with the CSO in a few weeks....can hardly wait....what emotion, what shear beauty
no tiene nada de malo que un musico sea tan teatral porke quien toca un instrumento no me dejara mentir que hay veces que necesitas moverte para darle la expresion
I wouldn't call it a visual show... Hes just feeling the music, and I think he's earned the right to considering how well he plays... And who cares really, if you really knew anything about music, you would listen rather than stare.
Sometimes the classical world misses a serious point of performance that most professional musicians should know: a visual show is just as important as the aural. You have to understand, he is most likely on a stage where the nearest people could be 20 feet away. his movements seem very gentle and probably not overdone from the actual seats.

joshua bell really isn't one of my favorite violinists, but i like the way he plays the second movement of the bruch concerto. he has great legato style. also, i like the way he plays with such conviction. i met him twice at the autograh sessions after the concert. what he lacks in his quiet and dull personality, he makes up for it in his music. .....just my 2 cents, which might not count for much. :)
it's true, he did start a bit sharp. he corrected it quickly though. watch his hand carefully at the very beginning if you don't believe me. you can see him shift his hand VERY slightly just before he starts his vibrato. you can also hear a distortion in pitch.
he started the note sharp and quickly tried to hide it? i'm sorry, that doesn't sound like making anything beautiful. i'm not trying to be one of those stupid people who picks on every mistake, but if you read what i replied to, i just wanted to clarify to the poster i replied to that he was indeed out of tune. anyway, don't worry, i judge a player based on consistency, not on random mistakes.
also after another listen through, i've noticed that i get random distortions on my computer. so maybe i'm wrong about the pitch issue, and maybe it's actually just my computer/the recording after all.
A lot of people hate Joshua Bell for moving to much, but I like so much because he does, If he jumped on and off the stage I would like him that much more.
He's certainly very passionate about this movement. Beautifully done. It's hard to believe he was influenced by his studies with Gingold. Gingold was more of a Kriesler type player without the gushing of Bell.
Isaac Stern used to speak frequently about the failure of violinists to use different types of vibrato for different pieces. He felt that too many string players has one vibrato that they used for everything.
My niece Valtie Nunn loves everything by Joshua Bell and I understand why. She played the Bruch at her final concert before going up to Trinity College of Music. I
Joshua is impassioned... he is playing the violin that most passionate and expressive of instruments. Just my 2c worth.
the Bruch violin concerto is a very dramatic and romantic concerto - listen to the interlude (tutti) parts ... if you do not watch him play, you may change your mind
it's a great interpretation I think but just now I listened the Perlman interpretation and I must say that Perlman has a great colored sound that at this part is just wonderful and maybe Joshua Bell could improve his sound to be more powerfull and coloured. All the best
Well I didn't win but I felt like played my best. Many peopel were saying my sound was beautiful and well my main goal was to go ahead and play it with passion and to make the audience moved by my playing. Goal accomplished! ^_^
That's all I have to say. He has amazed me once again. I will always appreciate his emotion and his BRILLIANT tone. He honestly has one of the warmest tones ever.
I first heard this beautiful piece of music when I was around twelve and now I am 60 and still love it. Joshua does a brilliant rendition of it thanks for this
This is so beautiful, I have no words. Thank you for uploading this. Is there any chance of uploading the first and third movement? Althought snippets of this proms-performance have been uploaded before and deleted for copyright reasons in no time. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well I didn't win but I felt like played my best. Many peopel were saying my sound was beautiful and well my main goal was to go ahead and play it with passion and to make the audience moved by my playing. Goal accomplished! ^_^

Oh...my....god.

Bell owns this concerto. No one plays it with his urgent interpretation. We heard him play this is Tucson on January 15, 2008. He was really on!
