  • Updike was a terrible homophobe. Glad he's dead.

  • @HorseshitDetector Glad to see there's someone progressive minded enough to relish the death of people who say they don't like reading books about homosexuals.

  • @HorseshitDetector you're an idiot...

  • @HorseshitDetector Updike was in no way a homophobe. A family friend of his happened to be homosexual, and i have seen them both in person conversing as friends do

  • most of the writers are such a pain in the ass as a person, john updike is an exception.

  • r.i.p john updike way to carry on my and your name yes my last name is updike

  • Amazing that such a small, unassuming man can produce such work and be such a genius. I can't get over how beautiful his books are.

  • My favorite writer. I read his short story "A&P" in college and then picked up his book "Couples" and fell in love with his writing style. R.I.P.

  • I'm halfway thru Rabbit is Rich- I was an english major and never read him until now (age 35). I always knew of Updike and his death got me interested in finally trying him out. I started with one of the Bech books and could not get into it and then figured I'd give the him one more chance and I fell in love with Rabbit, Run! Updike is brilliant. I wish my wife's book club would do the series...

  • Talk abut rabbit, talk about the character that was. I'm finished with the Rabbit is Rich and even though I've been tipped off, I does not surprise me that during his whole life he was running toward his death. And at times during the first 3, I think, just as well. A life so tragic, so hopeless in having a good thought toward another, so void of outside awareness deserves to be run hard and put away quick. Hemmingway was depressing and Updike must have took some ques from him.

  • My description of the late John Updike. Brilliant, brilliant and more brilliant.

  • I am reading his collection (Early Stories: 1953 - 1975). Took me a long time to get into his work. But I am hooked!

  • Rest in peace Updike. Your prose will live on like an untarnished gem

  • You felt better when you killed the rabbit!

  • did he finnally make it to that great big rabbitt hole in the ground?

  • He seems effortlessly great. Some great men seem to put a lot of effort in the choice of their words or the way they carry themselves. But with Updike, the brilliant ideas spew forth with a purity, a lack of intervention. His very nature seems to be extraordinary without any embellishment. I long to be that great.

  • Yes, lickmynose. :)

  • What a beautiful man he was.
