Rota was a great recycling magician- ala Rossini. There is a cassette tape of Coppola working with Rota on Godfather I in Rome circa 1971. Coppola:"Do you have music for 'going to Los Angeles"? Rota: "Oh yes, it's all ready" and proceeds to play on the piano music from Toby Dammit from 15 years earlier. Perhaps Coppola caught him as different LA music (not Rota) is used in the film.
@ikmarchini That piece is 'the Pickup'. It is not identical to Toby Dammit, one can easily see the similarities but they were distinct. The reason why it was removed from the film and replaced by Manhattan Seranade was because of an argument between Coppola and the producers, who absolutely didn't want any of Rota's score in the film at all, they wanted Mancini. Coppola was in a stand off with the producers, and eventually agreed to leave it to a test screening to gauge audience response.
Despite the faster pace and change of tone, I still can't imagine this theme being used in a comedy, I have seen the Godfather films so many times that the theme is just too closely tied to tragedy.
It sounds powerful, although I don't think it's a work of the same level (and kind). The best thing we can do is to admire the fact, that the love theme from The Godfather originates not in a worst movie score.
@iLoveWoman2009 this version sounds like a cheerful and happy party song though. it's a funny version of it but i prefer the godfather. the slower pace and gloominess make the song standout far more

So a guy can't use its own theme for another movie... THE ACADEMY AWARDS ARE STUPID
This one is comedic and the godfather one is dramatic
