Thanks for the heads up about JJ's bass at the end, he is one of the main reasons I play bass. It would be great to see this line up again but it will never happen
Saw Hugh recently with Clem Burke + Steve Lawrence . Fantastic ! Best "Stranglers" show since the old days . Steve was amazing + he reminded me of why they were my favorite band years ago ! His channeling of J.J. was right on . As good as it gets . So happy for Hugh . 10/10 big time . Oh ... Clem Burke is a monster ha ha !!
Woke up on a good day And the world was wonderful A midnight summer dream had me in its spell I dreamt about an old man Sat and watched the rain all night He couldn't sleep a wink as all the drops fell He told me of the beauty Hidden in our foreheads He told me of the ugliness We show instead And when we put a foot wrong do we learn From all the pain A midnight summer dream as he watched the rain moshe shabot
That ending base was awesome, but it cut off too soon! Saw them live once, in Sydney in 1984 I think it was (with Hunters and Collectors supporting). They were awesome, but I was so excited I can't remember any of it except that the last song they did was my favorite at the time (and still one of my faves), Toiler on the Sea.
Wow...still get chills from this one...Haven't heard it since about "90 when I sold the vinyl for gas money...stupid, I know..cool to see it anywhoo...JJ way too cool, nobody cooler...
I've watch them live yesterday in Thessaloniki Greece..super band..there are no words to describe the feeling by watching them playing live..unforgettable!
ego proti fora tous eida..exoun ksanarthei omos..logika se kana 2 me 3 xronakia isos xanarthoun..einai kai kapoias ilikias vlepeis ..as elpisoume oti tha tous xanadoume
Saw them a few times from 79 - 85; one of the best being in '83 around the time of this excellent track. Two years later and they'd lost it. Odd that they are still touring (albeit in two pieces)
Pity Hugh Cornwall does sing for them anymore. How a band can keep changing it's leave singer is beyond me. AC/DC, The Delltones, INXS, etc. I would love the sheet music for this song.
always a good show seeing the stranglers, good stuff, they had improved beyond belief the first two times i seen them, they really set the standard of musical ability and a wall of sound through good production. like to see them play a big festival stage again. .
I once asked the musical hall of fame via a web site why they have not got the Stranglers in there. I am still angered by their response which was nothing short of them not giving a shit about the the band. In the UK the Stranglers still are tarnished by the journos of the70's/80's who now hold more senior positions. Same full circle and reap what you sow dont apply. Some one please put Bono off the stage, the sad wanna be world leader
The live versions of this song is way better than the studio. If only Jet Black did not decide to give up playing accoustic drums on the records during this period...
D'accord. So true. So true. How did any of us know back then that some 30 yrs (yikes!) hence we'd be here basking in the afterglow of these great songs?
Have to be honest, that comment sounds emo. Music is brilliant, one of the finer pleasures in life. If it's the SOLE pleasure in your life, you're sanity is skewiff.
No mate. If you gave me £50 quid to listen to anything connected to Level 42, I'd turn it down (and I'm skint) No I haven't listened to the others. Just accept that people have different tastes. I have. I wouldn't waste my time commenting on a video I didn't like as I wouldn't watch it in the first place (ala Level 42)
ok i teach a bit of bass on the side and jj is my fave bass player cos hes really good but hes not in ur face about it and alot of my students who i let listen to stranglers love it cos its amazing yet acsessable. i can never be victor wooten or billy sheehan but i can like up to jj
I wouldn't listen to Level 42 if you paid me mate. I had to endure that heap of bollox from my first Mrs! I will agree to disagree. If you are asking for good JJ bass, buy the first 4 Stranglers albums or listen to Princess Of The Street (on this channel)
@sham64andahalf When you get a Mrs that loves Level 42, you knoe you'll get in trouble. Or did she have a gold pussy? (No offense meant) BTW. Thank you again and again for this vid.
McCartney is one of the worlds greatest bassists in my opinion, especially at the start because he does things which are functional, again i'd rate Kim Deal on that too.. Function over form is sometimes better
In no way would stranglers or beatles or pixies benefit from a slap bass solo! HOW WOULD THAT BE BETTER?
JJ is the best bassist for the stranglers, end of story no one else in the world could do what he does better
@ravb00 sorry mate, i know this conversation took place a year ago but JESUS CHRIST !!! how can you compare a pop band to a punk one??? nobody actually cares about bass solos and funky level 42 bol...cks. .Midnight summer dream is probably one of the best songs ever recorded. Just enjoy it as a whole.
@iba777 Hey bro-just bored again on our "memorial day weekend" here in the states where we honor all the lost souls to "progress".... but love this song so much, had to look it up on a rainy, summer day. Still gives me the chills. I'm a drummer, love Jett Black, but JJ is mesmerizing. Too bad Hugh had so many demons to deal with...they'd still be touring!
@ravb00 It isnt all about being a virtuoso and having the ability to have 10 min long solos. if you cant write a good song you cant do shit in my opinion
He´s simply one of the best bassplayers in the whole rockindustry. He was for sure the best a long time and maybe he is even now. His style is unique and he can drive songs with his bass alone. Alone the sound of his bass is very deep and esciting, though the sound quality of this fine video doesn´t show this.
ravb00 your opinion!! but with a quote of 'your stile of music' was that a pun? don't you mean style of music? not a great recording to hear JJ's playing, but JJ plays the bass with a style, saddly lacking of today's bass players, you can see he was originally a classicaly trained guitar musician and does not conform with the normal accepted backing style, with the drum and bass playing just as an accompany or as backing tempo
go back to sleep old ravb00 say for another???? midnight summer dream. not a fan of the boys.... try to be a bit constructive in your personal observations of bands that have enhanced the lives of others... okay done some dodgy stuff but always willing to try something differnt???? thats why they stand the test of time. try going to see them if you can. very changeling :)
JJ in his Yamaha bass period - a bass he thrashed accidentally with one of his slaps. Nowadays he's back on the ol' Precision which sounds better anyway.
any of you cunts actually followed and paid to watch the stranglers from the 70"s?dont just come on this and watch 1 vid and get all fucking simon cowell!watch the best live band ever, the most energetic, powerfull,in your face fuck offf music, then talk to me
Apparently, Jean-Jacques Burnel was born in London to French parents. J.J., tu es un bassiste fort talentueux. J'ai toujours été un fan des Stranglers. D'ailleurs, j'ai tous les disques vinyles que vous avez mis sur le marché. I really miss the 80s. There was great music. Today's music doesn't worth listening to. Thank you guys for your classic songs ! Cheers from Canada !
